Trailer Tuesday: A Christmas Carol
At first glance, the cast for Disney’s A Christmas Carol, directed by Robert Zemeckis (The Polar Express, Forrest Gump, Back to the Future) looks fantastic. You have Jim Carrey (Yes Man), Colin Firth (Mama Mia!), Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight), Robin Wright Penn (State of Play), Michael J. Fox (Stuart Little), Bob Hoskins (Doomsday) and Cary Elwes (The Alphabet Killer). But then so did the cast for Beowulf, Zemeckis last film and his last venture into the photorealistic 3D animation world, and we all know how that turned out – craptastic.
The new trailer for Disney’s A Christmas Carol is posted below. The animation looks nothing short of spellbinding and no matter how many times the tale is told, Dickens’ A Christmas Carol never grows old. However, in my opinion, what will either make or break this movie is Jim Carrey. Just how much of his loud, grating overacting audiences can stomach and how he is used will be either the rotten egg or the golden goose for this family feature. Considering Carrey is providing likeness and voice for Ebenezer Scrooge, The Ghost of Christmas Past, Present and Christmas Yet to Come, the likelihood of me wanting to gouge my eyeballs out is fairly high.
Disney’s retelling of the Dickens classic opens in theaters, including Disney Digital 3D and IMAX 3D, on November 6, 2009.

You had me at Collin Firth…
I dunno- the animation looks much improved over Polar Express and Beowulf and overall I think it looks very promising… but the whole Wile E. Coyote shooting firework/megaphone/dunce cap thing? They going for Looney Tunes humor here?
Yep, that’s exactly what I said and think. The only question mark in this movie is Jim Carrey. How much can we handle? Based on the trailer, I’d say it’s hard to say, but I’m leaning towards too much Jim Carrey thus far.
Every film that Carrey makes has too much of him in. He is such a strong character that he completely takes over and the film quicky becomes The Jim Carrey Show. I’d like to bet that by the end of this film any co-stars will have faded into the background completely. Not one I’ll be watching, I’m afraid.

I couldnt have said it better.
However i will be seeing this cause im dating a gal who loves this stuff and tbh it looks like a fun movie to me.
Susan comes through in the clutch. Well said. I’m of the mind that Carrey’s “strong acting” is what the thespian crowd calls “overacting” (just ask Swoosie Kurtz from Liar, Liar), and while that works in films like Ace Ventura, it doesn’t work in a classic piece like this.
But, I’ll leave an open mind, as this tale is one of my all-time faves.
