Trailer Tuesday (Dan’s Pick): Nine

November 17, 2009 Coming Soon, Trailer Tuesday 2 Comments

Rob Marshall’s (Chicago) next big singing, lush-glam, glitz-fest before heading off to helm the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie is Nine. Leading on our list of Must-Miss Holiday movies, Nine is the reality turned fantasy story of Guido Contini, an Italian filmmaker who navigates the estrogen-filled waters of Woman Land. Based on the Broadway musical of the same name, Nine will certainly be a flashy and sexy production at the hands of Rob Marshall, but as an admitted non-fan of the Oscar-winning Chicago, , and a modern-musical-translated-to-film curmudgeon, I’m not looking forward to more of the same soullessness, technical expertise aside.

Nevertheless! We may not be looking forward to the movie, but Nine‘s trailer encapsulates the whole thing in a musical number that, at least, sexily and interestingly trips the light fantastic. I’m not sure if it will translate to interest for anyone outside of the snooty East/West Coast artiste establishment, but if you’re going to come out selling a musical, this is the way to do it.

I realize that it’s based on a broadway play, but it’s roots–the characters and the main story– are undeniably those of Fellini’s “8 1/2″ which is a masterpiece and one of the true feats of cinema… you do not remake a classic film under ANY circumstance! It’s an outrage, imo. While we’re at it, why not remake “M”, “Rashomon”, “Rules of the Game”, “Grand Illusion”, among others?? This proves once again that hollywood knows no bounds.

It might even be a decent film, considering who’s in this. But for the aforementioned reason, and the fact that it co-stars Kate Hudson (the film loses all credibility there), I will not pay to see this.

Ha! SKG, you just served the crap out of Nine.

    Well played.

Movie Review: The Last Airbender (F)

By ANDY MORGAN There are very few movies I completely and utterly abhor. Generally, I can usually find something positive or likeable in a film, even if said cinema is receiving disgust and scorn en masse from most fall-in-line movie critics. I relish the truth that I don’t always see eye-to-eye with most critics and [...]

Movie Review: The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (B)

By ANDY MORGAN Making fun of Twilight fans and bemoaning Stephanie Meyer’s novels and the subsequent movies is almost as easy as drumming up sarcastic jabs about Lindsey Lohan, Paris Hilton or Miley Cyrus. There’s no effort required. It’s easy. And it’s also out of control. It’s almost as popular to dump on the vampire-werewolf [...]

Movie Review: The Last Airbender (C-)

By DAN VINTON If there’s one thing The Last Airbender does well, it proves any mystique surrounding M. Night Shaymalan is gone. With this coffin-bound nail, all residual goodwill The Sixth Sense director retained from followup successes like Unbreakable, Signs and even the creepy but fatally flawed The Village has been throttled by his is [...]
