Does Clint Eastwood Ever Stop?

December 12, 2009 Commentary, News 8 Comments

clint-eastwoodNot only is Clint Eastwood a superb director, but he is a hard worker. Seriously, the guy has been going non-stop with award-winning films since 2003 and Mystic River, which, I should add, he followed-up with Million Dollar Baby, Flags of Our Fathers, Letters from Iwo Jima, Changeling, Gran Torino, Invictus and, due in 2010, Hereafter. With the exception of Hereafter, I dare you to argue that any one of those movies isn’t nothing short of stellar. You can’t. And you won’t, because you’d be wrong.

But back to Hereafter – we don’t know much about it, except it stars Eastwood’s man-muse, Matt Damon (Invictus), and Bryce Dallas Howard (Terminator Salvation), according to Variety, was just added to the cast. Little is know about the plot, but we do know it’s being described as a supernatural thriller and was written by Peter Morgan (The Queen). Frankly, it could be about zombie gerbils that escaped from Richard Gere’s butt and somehow Eastwood would find away to emotionally connect with the audience and Oscar voters.

Anyway, my point, if you haven’t realized already is simple: Clint Eastwood is the bomb.

For discussion, what is your favorite Eastwood-directed movie? Is he a better director than actor?

  1. I really appreciate Clint Eastwood as both an actor and director. After watching every one of the films above, I can’t help but decide that Eastwood is a greater director than actor… it’s a tough call, but really, he is an amazing director, and each one of his films affects me deeply (even Unforgiven)… Love the guy, and hope he sticks around for more films.

  2. Susan Chafer says:

In Mystic River Eastwood proved to me that it’s possible to make a good film whilst staying true to the author’s original story. For that he will always be great to me, because let’s face it, a lot of adaptations are rubbish (so much so that I rarely bother with them). I’m not a Matt Damon fan but I’ll give this one the benefit of the doubt, because of Eastwood’s involvement.

  3. Andy says:

Have you read any of Lehane’s other books, Susan? I just started Shutter Island and have also purchased The Given Day. I like his style and it’s a good read so far.

    • Susan Chafer says:

Andy – I’ve read all the Kenzie and Gennaro books and Mystic River and Shutter Island. Haven’t read The Given Day yet and I haven’t read Coronado because I’m not keen on short stories (although it’s only a matter of time). I love his style and I only wish there were more.

  4. Porthos says:

I am ashamed to say I haven’t seen any movies he’s directed other than Unforgiven and Mystic River. I really need to up my movie watching chops apparently.

  5. Dan says:

He’s simply solid director. Deliberate and at ease. Invictus is a great place to kick it off.

  6. Danny says:

    You dolts!

Paint your Wagon was his greatest achievement!

He has the singing voice of a songbird..

  7. Dan says:

    Yeah. Gran Tarino was enchanting.

Movie Review: The Last Airbender (F)

By ANDY MORGAN There are very few movies I completely and utterly abhor. Generally, I can usually find something positive or likeable in a film, even if said cinema is receiving disgust and scorn en masse from most fall-in-line movie critics. I relish the truth that I don’t always see eye-to-eye with most critics and [...]

Movie Review: The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (B)

By ANDY MORGAN Making fun of Twilight fans and bemoaning Stephanie Meyer’s novels and the subsequent movies is almost as easy as drumming up sarcastic jabs about Lindsey Lohan, Paris Hilton or Miley Cyrus. There’s no effort required. It’s easy. And it’s also out of control. It’s almost as popular to dump on the vampire-werewolf [...]

Movie Review: The Last Airbender (C-)

By DAN VINTON If there’s one thing The Last Airbender does well, it proves any mystique surrounding M. Night Shaymalan is gone. With this coffin-bound nail, all residual goodwill The Sixth Sense director retained from followup successes like Unbreakable, Signs and even the creepy but fatally flawed The Village has been throttled by his is [...]
