Happy Birthday to Us!

593 posts, 1,905 comments and 80,698 visitors and AATM is one year old. I’m not sure what that means aside from an abnormal obsession with all things movies, lots of not-so-free-time watching trailers, reading articles, gossip, rumors and a weekly trip to Salt Lake City to catch one or two flicks, and a sincere jolt of adrenalin that comes from debating the hell out of things like Twilight, The Halo Movie and how 3-D sucks crotch. A few acknowledgements are

Trailer Tuesday: Knight and Day

There has been a lot of Tom Cruise hate since 2005, after Old Man Maverick painted Brooke Shields as a drug-happy quack and did his dance of Katie Holmes adoration on Oprah Winfrey’s sofa. But I’m not a member of the Anti-Cruise Brigade, in fact I think the guy is undeniably one of our most underappreciated actors. Sure, we can crap on things like Cocktail, Interview with the Vampire, Eyes Wide Shut or Vanilla Sky, but the dude has talent

Transformers 3 Adds Big Names to Cast

Michael Bay announced on his website on March 22 that Oscar regulars, John Malkovich (Burn After Reading) and Frances McDormand (Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day) have joined the cast of Transformers 3, due to hit theaters the summer of 2011. Also joining the cast is Ken Jeong, most recently seen in The Hangover doing a naked Asian impression with Bradley Cooper of the facehugger scene in Alien. The three actors join Transformers regulars Megan Fox, Shia LaBeouf, Tyrese Gibson

Movie Review: How To Train Your Dragon

Between Kung Fu Panda and How To Train Your Dragon, Dreamworks Animation is on to something. Thankfully jettisoning the  “story built around jokes” framework that’s been their bread and butter since Shrek, How To Train Your Dragon hews more closely to the better connective practice of building an emotionally resounding story. The result is an animated family film that follows a predictable “find your place in the world and teach your community a lesson in the process” trope, but does

Chris Evans is Captain America

I have nothing against Chris Evans. I think he’s great in Sunshine and I thought he holds his own as Johnny Storm in both Fantastic Four movies. I can see why Marvel Studios wants him in the role of Captain America in The First Avenger: Captain America. He’s a recognizable face, he’s a handsome dude and he’s got a nice, Ryan Reynold’s-esque wit and sarcasm. But frankly, I would have loved to see Marvel Studios do something different and go

Behold the Bland: New Twilight Eclipse Poster is 100% Lame

I’m not a fan of The Twilight Saga, but this poster blows. I know, I know. I sound surprised. I’m not, but if I was a fan, I’d be disappointed. Plus, am I the only one who can’t figure out why Bella isn’t picking Jacob over Edward? I mean, just from the poster wouldn’t you go with the dependable hunk over the pasty-skinned, brooding vampire who is always running away? Seems clear to me, but then girls generally like the

Trailer Tuesday: The Good, The Bad, The Weird

Korean Westerns are fantastic. Not that I’ve ever seen one, or if the idea’s even geographically/historically possible, but the trailer for The Good, The Bad, The Weird proves me an ignoramus. After a few years in the film festival circuit and making international rounds, The Good, The Bad, The Weird has nabbed a US release via IFC and on-demand. It’ll have a limited theatrical run, but will probably hit home video before long. Still! Don’t be put off by the

Trailer Tuesday: More Kick-Ass Goodness

I read a mixed review of Kick-Ass last month that had me doubting the sheer cinegasmic beauty of all – yes, all – the trailers I’ve seen for this flick, but I’m feeling better today because Rotten Tomatoes has Kick-Ass, due in theaters on April 16th, pegged at 100 percent on the Tomatometer. Sure, sure…I know what all the naysayers and Debbie Downers will say, “It’s only got 12 reviews so far, ANDY! Jackass!” Guess what? I don’t care. I’m

Predator & Dune Re-Dubs are Pure Gold

Once again I have to thank AATM reader, Danny, for bringing this Predator re-dubbing to my attention. I laughed my ass off through both this and the embedded Dune re-dub. Something about high-pitched, squeaky voices and talk of poop and balls makes me giggle. It also reminds me of the sheer pleasure that is Kung Pow: Enter the Fist. A bit of trivia, the guys behind these re-dubs are from Sequential Pictures, the makers of this hilarious Star Wars Episode

New Predators Trailer

Last week, fan pants were soiled when a behind the scenes teaser for Predators upstaged SXSW and quickly made its way to AATM. Not a week later, the teaser trailer hits, showing more scenes of running, sweating and nervous glancing. For its part, the trailer is pretty effective — even more so if you haven’t seen the teaser– but I’m not on board. Still. Robert Rodriguez, who’s not directing but has his fingerprints all over the project, isn’t a guy
