Oh, man! Just the what the world needs right now! More Jurassic Park and more Star Wars! Please, dear Lord in Heaven, make this not happen. Yes, according to the traffic whores sleuths at MovieWeb.com (HA!), Joe Johnston, director of Captain America: The First Avenger, says a Jurassic Park re-boot is coming down the pike, and he has a Boba Fett movie in mind for George “Hollah for Dollahs” Lucas. So what is fact and what is fiction? Well, Steven Spielberg, attending his first-ever Comic-Con last month to promote his upcoming movie, The Adventures of Tintin, said, ”We have a writer who is writing a treatment and hopefully we will make Jurassic Park 4 in the next two to three years.” Johnston, who directed Jurassic Park III, added, ”The most important thing I can tell you is that it starts a new trilogy that will go off in a different direction — a completely different direction that is very exciting.” I’m cool with more dino movies coming down the pike. I dig dinosaurs like I dig sharks, but I hope, for all that is good and holy, that a Boba Fett movie never sees the light of day. I don’t give a crap how much merchandise the Son of Jango sells at Wal-mart. This is your fault, fanboys. You and George Lucas ruined Star Wars. For shame.

I love movies where killer fish go wild on unsuspecting humans and when I say movies I really mean Jaws. Everything else is utter crap. True story. When Piranha 3D came out last summer, I held my breath and hoped for the best, as I always do with these types of movies. I thought the cast was decent and the plot seemed ripe for success. Boy, was I wrong. Piranha 3D was absolute crap. It was a cameo-fest for pornstars and ridiculous gore and camp. Believe me, I’m 100 percent sure the filmmakers were going for the ridiculous, but the gore titilation and silliness were beyond cringe-worthy. It was, in my estimation, nearly unwatchable. So, hey, if you were looking for signs of Jesus’ return, forget tornadoes, war, pestilence and the love of man waxing cold, and turn your attention to Piranha 3DD, which, according to a press release I received a few days ago, has just started production. The double D’s in the title is pretty clever. I’d like to congratulate the intern that came up with that little nugget. Considering all the adult film stars in the first movie, I’m sure the double D in the sequel definitely means we’ll see more fake boobies than Hugh Hefner. This second installment will be set in a waterpark and will feature the acting talents of one Gary Busey. No word yet on whether his teeth have been signed, as well. Piranha 3DD comes to theaters November 23, 2011, and, according to the press release, “the feast is on this Thanksgiving.” John Gulager (Feast) will handle directorial duties.

There really haven’t been any breathtaking, blow-your-mind, first-class shark movies since Jaws in 1977 and I highly doubt Shark Night 3D, due in theaters on September 2, 2011, will change that fact. Still, sharks are awesome and so are bikinis, and by the looks of it, this movie has both. Shark Night 3D is directed by David R. Ellis (Snakes on a Plane) and stars Sara Paxton (Last House on the Left), Dustin Milligan (Slither), Chris Carmack (The O.C.), Joel David Moore (Avatar) and Katherine McPhee (The House Bunny). From IMDB.com and Wikipedia, I learned the movie is set in Louisiana and a bunch of college pals endure a night of hell when they encounter sharks galore in – gasp! – a freshwater lake! I expect this to be super campy and super gory. I also offer a prayer to the movie gods that it will be better than last summer’s letdown, Piranha 3D.
I promise to withhold total judgment until this fan film is completely finished, but as a fan of Halo and someone who wishes Microsoft would pull their heads out of their asses and make the damn thing already, this kind of low-budget, let’s-play-guns-in-the-backyard dorkiness just makes me cringe. I know, I know, someone – in this case UK amateur filmmaker Peter Cooper – is passionate about Halo and has put quality time and effort into translating that love to film, but that doesn’t mean I have to like it. Especially when, in my opinion, it looks super turdtastic. But let’s be 100 percent honest: A Halo movie will never, ever be made. Yes, people are online teabagging each other right now on XBOX Live with Halo: Reach, and yes Microsoft will continue to pump out Halo titles until Master Chief’s teats dry out, but the movie is dead. I can’t see Microsoft creating the type of adoration that existed in 2006-2007 ever again. Nope. Unless a big name director (read: Steven Spielberg) is tagged to helm this potential blockbuster, it will stay buried and fans will have to live off the fumes of third-rate fanboy wetdreams, like Operation Chastity.

The Underworld series of vampire vs. lycans movies are high on my list of guilty-pleasure cinema and a big reason for that pleasure comes from the oh-so-sexy Kate Beckinsale and the way she busts caps into werewolf booty whilst wearing tight black leather. I don’t go gaga over many Hollywood actresses, but Beckinsale is definitely one that makes my pulse quicken. The picture below is from the latest installment of The Underworld franchise (the last was Underworld: Rise of the Lycans in 2009), titled Underworld: New Dawn. It’s due in theaters on January 20, 2012 (in super-lame 3D, nonetheless) and the story centers around Selene (Beckinsale) who, after rising from a coma for 15 years, learns she has a vampire-lycan daughter, Nissa, and together they fight a big bad corporation from creating bio-engineered lycans that will wipe everyone out. Underworld: New Dawn will be critically panned and will have a modest, one-weekend success at the frozen January box office, but I’ll still enjoy every squeaky minute of Beckinsale putting boot to hairy wolf face in her tight black getup. What about you? Intrigued. Go on. Admit it. You are.

According to Dead Space 2′s in-game calculator, I’ve wasted spent 30 hours of my life, since late January, dismembering necromorphs (see: wetting myself out of fear) and galavanting across The Sprawl, looking like a bad ass space cowboy with my arsenal of limb-slicing weapons. I simply cannot get enough Dead Space. I loved the first game and I’m humping the leg of the second installment (on my fourth play-through). It’s a shooter, it’s a haunted house, it’s a space adventure and is chock full of interstellar zombies and, in this writer’s opinion, a compelling storyline. Add to that an eerie, cinematic score, eye-popping visuals and jaw-dropping attention to detail and it’s safe to say, for me, Dead Space is the new Halo. Still, what does this all mean to a non-gamer? Well, aside from the fact that I want a Dead Space 3 in the worst way, I want a Dead Space movie STAT. And trust me, if you like sci-fi and also like wearing Depends adult diapers to the cineplex, you want this movie, too. But guess what? It’s not going to happen. Really, it’s not. Just ask Halo, Bioshock and Gears of War fans. They’ve been waiting, in the case of Halo, since 2006 for a big screen orgy of grunts, elites, brutes and ol’ Master Chief, and even though it came close to fruition with Peter Jackson and Neill Blomkamp, who went on to kick serious box-office booty with District 9 – best picture booty, in fact, fans were left with blue balls when 20th Century Fox and Universal balked at the massive pricetag and earnings demands Microsoft was championing. Despite its existence in Development Hell, Halo overseer Frank O’ Connor has said the movie still will be made. Rumors of Steven Spielberg’s interest in the franchise have soothed wounded souls from time-to-time, but as of today Halo is dead. And it should be. The Halo flame has been extinguised by the Call of Duty franchise. Microsoft would have to really stir some sustained interest for the movie ever to garner the success it could have obtained in 2007-2008, at the height of Halo 3′s popularity. The same can be said for Bioshock and Gears of War. Both directors originally attached have jettisoned from each project and both movies are stalled and most likely will never be made. While both games have sequels (Bioshock Infinite and Gears of War 3) coming in 2011, it’s hard to imagine the “wow” factor ever being the same as it was in 2007-2008. There is something to be said about timeliness. Studios must strike when the iron is hot, because with the passage of too much time the property wilts from compelling and engaging to just another video game movie waiting to entertain a small horde of fanboys, but destined to fizzle into financial and critical obscurity. So, to the head honchos of Dead Space, learn from the past. Be cautious, sure. But also, be bold. This has the chance to be something...

The Hunger Games, while not on the epic fan level as Twilight or Harry Potter, definitely has a massive fanbase and the filmmakers, specifically director Gary Ross, are not looking, despite the violence and sexuality in the young adult novels, to shaft the teenagers anxiously awaiting the film adaptation. Ross told Entertaintment Weekly the following regarding the rating of The Hunger Games movie: This book means too much to too many teenagers for it not to be PG-13. I don’t need to have a huge budget or make this movie incredibly bloody in order for it to be just as compelling, just as scary, and just as riveting. In other Hunger Games news, a casting rumor is floating around the web universe and it’s one I am crossing my fingers is true. Cinematical and ScreenRant have both done stories about True Grit star, Hailee Steinfeld, as a candidate for the role of 16 year-old bad ass, Katniss Everdeen. Time will tell if this has any truth, but anyone who watched Steinfeld in True Grit knows she has the acting chops and the vim and vigor to nail this role with gusto. See the picture of Hailee Steinfeld below. Could this be Katniss Everdeen, or is there someone else who better fits the bill?

We are still months away from seeing any sort of teaser trailer for Bill Condon’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get your Twihard fix right here and now with this image of Edward and Bella doing the mattress dance in the fourth installment of the vampire-werewolf-human soap opera. I haven’t read the, ahem, novels – and you can be damn sure I never will – but from what I gather, there are some downright head-shaking, cuckoo moments in Stephanie Meyer’s incredibly popular novel. My guess is the image below takes place on Vampire Sex Island, where Ed and Bella honeymoon and wake-up to a feather-fiesta from all the rough vampire porking the night before. But don’t worry, there shouldn’t be anything to make you blush too hard, as Breaking Dawn is set for a PG-13 rating and the filmmakers don’t want to alienate their fanbase by getting too graphic. At any rate, enjoy the picture! (Part I) hits theaters this November and the second installment whisks into cineplexes almost a month before the end of the world (It’s true! Just ask George Lucas!),

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, when I was a senior in high school, I read a book for the first time in years (without being forced – and even then I slurped up the Cliff’s Notes) and that glorious piece of fiction just so happened to be Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park. In short, and avid Crichton readers and fans know this, the novel was cinematic in scope, fast-paced and kept me flipping pages into the wee hours of the night. It was a summer blockbuster in print and, shortly after finishing the book, I remember thinking if a Jurassic Park movie was made, Steven Spielberg should be the brains behind the lens. That was almost 20 years ago, and somehow, someway, since June of 1993 the franchise has taken a massive nosedive, primarily because of two ridiculous sequels that tarnished everything noteworthy Jurassic Park had benchmarked. How do you go from a eye-popping tyrannosaurus rex eating the tires off a DayGlo Ford Explorer, to environmentalists vs. hunters, gymnastic battles with fearsome velociraptors and William H. Macy and Tea Leoni? Jurassic Park and its sequels are the new Jaws and its sequels. Now, to add further insult to injury, word on the streets is Jurassic Park 4 is in pre-production and is possibly filming at Universal Studios. What makes us think this? Check out this image, courtesy of The Movie Blog.com, that shows some of the attractions at Universal Studios this month. I’ll always go into a beloved franchise’s sequel or prequel with optimism, but like the Jaws sequels, I’m not sure there is any more terror or excitement we can add to the first film without continuing to tarnish the legacy of the original. On a more positive note, it seems we can expect the Jurassic Park trilogy to hit Blu-ray in 2011. Hopefully you can buy them separate, because I refuse to purchase the craptastic third film and even hesitate on the second movie, but my adoration of Spielberg, even his misfires, will probably outweigh my urge to flip the middle finger to The Lost World.

Remember how Men in Black, starring Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith, was an awesome movie and a nice summer surprise back in 1997? Remember how its sequel, Men in Black II, was pure crap? Remember how 3D sucks donkey balls and how Men in Black will be returning for a third time to the big screen, this time dry humping the ever living snot out of Hollywood’s favorite visual gimmick? Don’t get me wrong, thinking of Smith and Jones trying to redeem themselves after 2002′s disaster has some appeal, but not enough to make me giddy with joy for a third MIB movie. Oh, but wait! Stop the presses! There are castings and rumors of castings galore! First and foremost, we know Josh Brolin (Jonah Hex) is already signed, as is Jermaine Clement (The Flying Concords), and both those actors add a little flavor, particularly Clement, to this sequel. You can also add Betty White (The Proposal) and Nicole “Pussycat Doll” Scherzinger to the official cast list, but in what capacity is unknown. As for the rumors, a few weeks ago it was reported Alec Baldwin (30 Rock), Gemma Arterton (Clash of the Titans) Emma Thompson (Nanny McPhee Returns) and Sharlto Copley (District 9) were nanoseconds away from joining the Barry Sonnenfeld sci-fi romp. Unless I missed some piece of news, these castings have not been confirmed and are only rumors, nothing more. Would a third MIB film, in 3D, pumped full of big-name actors make me pine for May 25, 2012. Absolutely not. This movie will hit theaters 10 years after the 2002 dud. I suppose a top-notch screenplay could cause my cold heart to melt, but I highly doubt it. In my opinion, these castings are nothing but polish for a movie that is flimsy from the get-go. Just another example of Hollywood milking the money teat for every last drop.

Ben Affleck to Direct Ken Grimwood’s Replay?

About five years ago my dad recommended I read a book called Replay, by Ken Grimwood. He said it was one of the best books he’d ever read and he gave me his semi-worn copy, published back in 1988. It sat on my bookshelf for the longest time until I wound up sick for a few days and needed some reading material. Here’s what I know: my dad was right, Replay is a fantastic novel. Granted, it’s a little dated, but the emotion and thrust of the Grimwood’s story is hugely relevant. Obviously, my next thought was, “I wonder if Hollywood has plans to turn this into a movie?” As of this writing, there are rumors swirling that Ben Affleck (The Town) is set to star in and direct Replay. The gist of the story is this: What if you could “replay” your life over-and-over again? Sounds enticing, right? You could go back to the past and correct all those mistakes you’ve made and steer your life where you want it to go, all with the benefit of past experience and hindsight as your compass. You could make millions off knowing the future, end up with the person you love the most, help circumvent world tragedies and much, much more. But as the novel’s protagonist soon learns, the replay is a gift and a curse. He died at age 45 and no matter how many times he replays his life, he continues to die at age 45. As the novel soon points out, this becomes heartbreaking. To lose the ones you love over and over again is not a joy any amount of hindsight and course correction can dull. As I said before, this is a great read and a fast one at that. The novel is a little dated, but if you can get past that small hurdle I think you’ll enjoy the book. I’m now eagerly anticipating the movie and hoping, if it’s true, that Ben Affleck can bring some of his Gone Baby Gone and The Town magic to Grimwood’s wonderful piece of fiction.

When Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy made its American debuted on July 9, 2004, it was instantly hailed as an insightful, groundbreaking masterwork of American Cinema. On this, Anchorman‘s six year, one month and one day anniversary, we take a look back at a towering achievement that not only affirmed who we are as human beings, but managed to capture that spirit in a glass case of emotion. We salute you Will Farrell and Adam McKay and congratulate you and your plate of cat poop on the American Film Institute’s long overdue recognition of your film. Well played, gentleman. Well played, indeed. Bark twice if you’re in Milwaukee.
