Trailer Tuesday: The Boat that Rocked

Leave it to those crazy Brits to keep churning out hilarious comedies. I hadn’t heard of the film “The Boat that Rocked” until receiving a press alert on Monday, but after seeing the trailer, it looks to be packed with talent and is directed by Richard Curtis, the man who helmed one of my favorite guilty pleasure movies of all-time (“Love Actually”). “The Boat that Rocked” is set in 1966 and tells the story of a fictitious pirate radio station,

Pixar gives you… Storks

Pixar, to date, has been sterling. Even their middling efforts (Cars, as most would say– but I’d disagree) hold to a higher entertainment standard than most films bust months of hump to achieve. The Disney/Looney Toon reminiscent shorts, the cute vignettes shown before the Pixar movie you’re paying to see, are usually equally stellar– just bite-sized. With this year’s Pixar project Up just a few weeks away, Pixar has released a snippet from the short preceding it: Partly Cloudy. If

Predator might “Get to the Choppaaaaaah!”

Since we’re in the era of the reboot (Star Trek, James Bond, Friday the 13th), why not get to rebooting some Predator— the quintessential high point of 80’s blow-em-up and a particularly sweaty menage-a-trois of muscle on guns on alien action. “Why not indeed”, I say. On the whole, I cling to very few action movies of the 80s– too much hair, too many trampolined bodies and never enough wince-worthy one liners. Of course, there’s always exceptions– mine just happens

H2 Trailer Now Online (Wait – there was an H1?)

Rob Zombie directed a remake of the 1978 horror classic “Halloween” that was met with tepid box office results in 2007. Apparently the studio was so thrilled to see it’s money flushed down the toilet, they greenlit a sequel, called “H2” and it’s hitting theaters this August.  Click this link to get your first look at the somewhat-creepy trailer. I haven’t seen Zombie’s remake, but I have seen “The Devil’s Rejects,” so I’d expect gore, nudity and lots of bad

Brüno One Sheet is Sehr Fruchtig!

Universal Pictures emailed me this one sheet for Sacha Baron Cohen’s new movie “Brüno,” due in theaters on July 10,2009. That’s two days before my birthday, so I suppose I can expect a Borat-sized gift of male nudity, dominatrix outfits, akwardly humorous bits involving unsuspecting real-life people (see: Ron Paul) and probably enough hype over perceived offensiveness to fill a summer’s worth of blog posting. Yay! Happy birthday to me! To see a bigger version, click here.

Bloom (or wilt) Your Interest in the Brothers

According to the good word of a secret Hollywood source who constantly battles throngs of pimps, whores and thieves, The Brothers Bloom is both fun, whimsical and charming. I’m willing to believe what I’ve heard and will be making every effort to see it on or before its release on May 29. You, on the other hand, may not be. Maybe you need a little prodding. Should that be the case, today’s your lucky day. Give a mighty thanks to

Kick-Bum (aka Kick-Ass) Introduces You to Hit-Girl

About a year ago, Wanted exploded its way through skulls and into the collective hearts of American filmgoers. Based on a comic of the same name, the movie jettisoned the original conceit of a superhero slayer and replaced it with an assassins gone amok storyline. Exceeding expectations, Wanted‘s hyper stylization and flippant violence opened the tap to a shower of love from audiences. While this kid appreciated the creative conceits and imaginative action of Wanted, in the end the only

On The Road Again

Cormac McCarthy is one of those rare and celebrated artists who don’t need to die before their recognition as legendary. With a heap of plays and novels under his belt, Cormac McCarthy’s gained even more clout in recent years thanks to the Coen brothers Oscar-winning adaptation of No Country for Old Men and his most recent novel, The Road. Or, as it’s come to be known between Andy and me: The book guaranteed to turn you survivalist. The Road, a

Trailer Tuesday: The Hangover

I love movies. Period. But there is nothing I love more than filthy dude comedies. This little gem, “The Hangover,” is from director Todd Phillips and, in my opinion, Mr. Phillips needs of a hearty swathe of redemption since, no lie, everything he’s made since “Old School” has turned out to be utter crap. If you want to argue that point, I humbly suggest you re-watch “School for Scoundrels” and “Starsky & Hutch.”
