These posters have been online for a month or more, but because I’m a serious slacker I haven’t posted them here at AATM yet. I love the design of these posters, and while we’ve seen these characters (and more) in the full-length trailer for The Hunger Games, these one-sheets (going L to R) for Cinna, Cato, Effie, Katniss, Gale, Peeta, Rue and Haymitch, show a more detailed glimpse of the heroes and villains we’ll see when The Hunger Games hits theaters on March 23, 2012. Honestly, from what I’ve seen thus far, I like the way director Gary Ross and his crew have brought these memorable protangonists to life, with one exception: Haymitch. Perhaps I’ll change my mind when I see him on the big screen, but thus far – in the trailer and poster – I’m not a fan of the way Woody Harrelson is channeling the crusty old drunk, Haymitch Abernathy. Not. A. Fan. What do YOU think? Do you like the way these characters are portrayed, or did the filmmakers miss the mark?

After several months stalled at page 253, I recently finished Stieg Larsson’s first novel in his “Millennium Series,” The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and I am beyond happy I dug in my heels and finished this taut crime thriller. Larsson is impeccably deliberate and loves pacing the reader along methodically. My love of the book is making me super anxious to see David Fincher’s (The Social Network) movie of the same name, due in theaters on December 21, 2011. Given Fincher’s track record, the popularity of the novel and the eclectic cast, it’s hard not to see The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo as a possible Oscar contender. I actually streamed the Swedish film version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo via Netflix (streaming sucks doneky balls, by the way) and fell asleep midway through the movie. I hope that has more to do with subtitles than it does with content. But don’t take my pooh-poohing on the foreign version as commenplace, because RottenTomatoes.com has it at 86% positive and Roger Ebert gave it four out of four stars, becoming in the process, as are many viewers, fond of Noomi Rapace as Elisabeth Salander. It’s Rapace’s portrayal of the punk femme fatale in all three Swedish movie versions of Larsson’s novels that has propelled her into one of Hollywood’s most sought after new talents. Rapace will be seen in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows this December and in Ridley Scott’s Prometheus coming June 2012. Alas, I digress. Many fans of The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest movies don’t think Fincher can measure up to the intensity and brutality displayed vividly in the aforementioned Swedish versions. Not so says Rooney Mara (The Social Network), who is Fincher’s Salander. Talking about the infamous rape scene in The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo, Mara said, ““It was incredibly intense. We did it all in a week — the week of Valentine’s Day, oddly enough. We were working 16 hours a day, and it was really, really challenging, not just emotionally but physically. But it’s such an important scene. We wanted to do everything we could to get that right.” She also says the topless NSFW teaser poster is a good example of the in-your-face storytelling the filmmakers want to bring to the screen. Mara said, ”I understand why there was a lot of controversy. People have a hard time with strong females and with nudity. But I think had I been doing something incredibly violent on the poster, people wouldn’t have had a problem with it. That sort of says a lot about the world that we live in. It’s just a teaser poster. I think it did just that. It teased people.” The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo comes to theaters on December 21, 2011. You can watch the trailer by following this link.

Manohmanohman. So here it is. Our first image from Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel movie, the Superman reboot due in theaters on June 14, 2013, and I’m split between rolling my eyes at Henry Cavill (The Immortals) and his Kryptonian Mitt Romney hairdo, as well as his Superman suit, which looks more like something out of Joel Schumacher’s book of horrors than it does from Christopher Nolan’s book of everything-I-touch-turns-to-gold. However, with that said, I suppose that is the exact reason I don’t fret too much about the final Man of Steel product we’ll see in 2013. Here’s why: 1. Christopher Nolan: Considering the fact all his films are critical and commercial successes and that he and David Goyer came up with the story for Man of Steel and that he’s serving as executive producer, I feel confident the movie will be nothing short of phenomenal. 2. Zack Snyder: Love him or hate him, you can’t deny his style of filmmaking is eye-grabbing and stylish. If anything, Man of Steel will be pretty to watch. 3. The Cast: Henry Cavill (The Immortals), Amy Adams (The Fighter), Kevin Costner (Company Men), Diane Lane (Secretariat), Laurence Fishburne (Contagion), Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road), Julia Ormond and Russell Crowe (The Next Three Days).
Entertainment Weekly revealed their recent cover of Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) and Gale (Liam Hemsworth) from The Hunger Games movie a few days ago, and now they’ve dumped some more juicy images to turn every Hunger Games fan’s underwear into a moist towelette. That’s right. Grab your adult undergarmets STAT! Okay, that might be stretching the excitement a little too much, but the small gallery below should be enough to excite or anger fans of Suzanne Collins’ action packed dystopian novels, The Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay, soon to be released in – not three, but four movies! The first installment, The Hunger Games, hits theaters on March 23, 2012. As I said in my post a few days ago, I think it’s only a matter of time before we see a teaser trailer. What do you think of the images below?

A few months back our pals at Entertainment Weekly got us juiced and jazzed with our first images of Jennifer Lawrence (X-Men: First Class) as Katniss Everdeen, the badass heroine of director Gary Ross’ (Seabiscuit) movie version of the bestselling novel, The Hunger Games – the first movie in a planned quadrilogy. Now EW gives us our first official glimpse at the two men in Katniss’ life – lifelong best buddy, Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth), and the baker’s son and fellow District 12 tribute, Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson). I don’t know about you, but seeing these two in full Panem regalia makes me again tip my hat to the powers-that-be in the casting department. Now all we need is a full-blown teaser trailer for The Hunger Games and we’ll be set. You want my guess? Considering filming for The Hunger Games is halfway completed, and considering much of the Twilight crowd has crossed over into The Hunger Games territory, I’d bet we’d see a teaser trailer with the release of Taylor Lautner’s (Jacob in the Twilight movies) new flick, Abduction, hitting cinemas on September 23, 2011. Take a peek at the picture above. What say ye? Yay or nay?

With the looming Apocalypse/Armageddon in 2012, some folks might find it a tad bit difficult to feel sunny about the future. But take it from me, there is plenty to be excited about for 2012. I mentioned The Dark Knight Rises as my own personal 2012 must-see, but we can’t forget the other movies coming down the pike (The Hunger Games and the Superman reboot, Man of Steel), particularly The Amazing Spider-Man. And, lucky for us, Entertainment Weekly just dropped a whole load of Spider-Man images the latest issue (check out the gallery below). There are so many reasons to believe this re-boot of the Spidey franchise will be nothing short of stellar. From the director, Marc Webb, who dazzled us in 2009 with (500) Days of Summer, to the cast – Andrew Garfield (The Social Network), Emma Stone (Easy A), Rhys Ifans (Greenburg), Martin Sheen (The Departed), Sally Field (Brothers & Sisters) and Dennis Leary (Rescue Me). Plus, the photos tell the tale – this is a new vision and rightly so, because nobody wants any remembrances of Spider-Man 3 in their minds when July 3, 2012 rolls around.

Sharks are cool. 3D is lame. And both together, as last summer’s Piranha 3D proved, will not make good bedfellows. But Hollywood doesn’t care. Shark Night 3D has six pack Abercrombie abs, bikini wedgies, boobies, blood, explosions, hillbillies, wakeboarding, booze and CGI 3D sharks to make the under 25, backwards-hat-brigade of douchebags squeal like they’re warming up their $1 bills for a trip to Vegas. David R. Ellis, the director and man behind 2006′s Snakes on a Plane, isn’t looking for awards or honors, but a big fat payday and a juicy box-office weekend, followed with a director’s cut/unrated DVD/Blu-ray release a few months later that will cap the film nicely and ensure a bloodier, boobier sequel will follow shortly. What’s this all mean? I’m not sure. All I know is I’ll be seeing this for sure and will most likely be angry and disappointed when I leave the cineplex. I love sharks and am waiting for Hollywood to give me another Jaws type movie. Something I can be proud of and watch endlessly. This, for obvious reasons, is not it. At any rate, check out the cool poster to the left and the trailer below. I’d elaborate on the plot, but I think you can figure it out from the preview. Nobody worth mentioning is starring in this movie. It opens on September 2, 2011.

The first legitimate photo from The Dark Knight Rises has been released. The above shows Tom Hardy as the villain… Bane. Hardy (Inception) has been one of my favorite actors since he played “Handsome Bob” in RockNRolla (2008) a few years back, and I am glad that Christopher Nolan has decided to add him to his list of “actors I like to use in my movies.” Bane’s storyline in The Dark Knight Rises is still being kept under wraps, and since this is Nolan, expect it to stay a mystery until the first trailer is released. The picture is very creepy… skeleton hand covering his mouth… shaved head… etc., and is very similar to the promo shot of Heath Ledger’s Joker that was released nearly a year before The Dark Knight (2008) opened. If anything, at least Batman fans can be sure Bane won’t be the swollen, steroid packing moron portrayed in Batman and Robin (1997). A link to the film’s website was released along with the photo. The website is pretty bare for now, but it contains a short soundtrack that seems to fit the tone of Nolan’s series. After listening, I can say that I am definitely excited to see what Nolan will be releasing next. You guys think Hardy can live up to Ledger’s performance as the Joker?

Why? Because today fans of The Hunger Games get their first look at Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone) as Katniss Everdeen, courtesy of the fine folks at Entertainment Weekly. My first impression? It’s feeble, but all I can say is awesome. She looks absolutely awesome. My second impression? Those Hunger Games “fans” who scharted on Lawrence’s post-Oscar casting can now officially suck it. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then EW’s cover says FU to her detractors a thousand times in every conceivable tongue. Now, as Emma pointed out yesterday, as soon as we learn who will play Cinna and who will play President Snow, all will be well in the world. Let’s just hope it happens before May 21!

There really haven’t been any breathtaking, blow-your-mind, first-class shark movies since Jaws in 1977 and I highly doubt Shark Night 3D, due in theaters on September 2, 2011, will change that fact. Still, sharks are awesome and so are bikinis, and by the looks of it, this movie has both. Shark Night 3D is directed by David R. Ellis (Snakes on a Plane) and stars Sara Paxton (Last House on the Left), Dustin Milligan (Slither), Chris Carmack (The O.C.), Joel David Moore (Avatar) and Katherine McPhee (The House Bunny). From IMDB.com and Wikipedia, I learned the movie is set in Louisiana and a bunch of college pals endure a night of hell when they encounter sharks galore in – gasp! – a freshwater lake! I expect this to be super campy and super gory. I also offer a prayer to the movie gods that it will be better than last summer’s letdown, Piranha 3D.
The Underworld series of vampire vs. lycans movies are high on my list of guilty-pleasure cinema and a big reason for that pleasure comes from the oh-so-sexy Kate Beckinsale and the way she busts caps into werewolf booty whilst wearing tight black leather. I don’t go gaga over many Hollywood actresses, but Beckinsale is definitely one that makes my pulse quicken. The picture below is from the latest installment of The Underworld franchise (the last was Underworld: Rise of the Lycans in 2009), titled Underworld: New Dawn. It’s due in theaters on January 20, 2012 (in super-lame 3D, nonetheless) and the story centers around Selene (Beckinsale) who, after rising from a coma for 15 years, learns she has a vampire-lycan daughter, Nissa, and together they fight a big bad corporation from creating bio-engineered lycans that will wipe everyone out. Underworld: New Dawn will be critically panned and will have a modest, one-weekend success at the frozen January box office, but I’ll still enjoy every squeaky minute of Beckinsale putting boot to hairy wolf face in her tight black getup. What about you? Intrigued. Go on. Admit it. You are.

Listen, I love superhero movies, but I don’t know jack about the comic book side. Call me lazy, uninterested or whatever. I prefer to call myself un-nerdy, but hey, let’s not plaster labels and point fingers. We all get a little juiced over our own little entertainment universes. Lately, for me, it’s Dead Space. A few years ago it was Halo. When I was a kid it was Star Wars. Maybe for you it’s Twilight or The Hunger Games or [clears throat] Captain America. I’m sorry, okay! Maybe it’s the impending explosion of our planet in 2012, but I just am not excited over this summer’s crop of superhero flicks (don’t even get me started on Green Lantern), and one of them is Captain America: The First Avenger. Let me put it this way: I’m intrigued, but my expectations are low. Maybe that’s good, but from what I’ve seen from Joe Johnston, I’m not pre-ordering the Blu-ray any time soon. At any rate, here’s Red Skull, Captain America’s nemisis. This grumpy, red-faced bad guy is played by Hugo Weaving, who you probably know from his work as Agent Smith in The Matrix series, or maybe as the voice of Megatron in the Transformers movies. Me? I know him from his kick-ass Jedi braids in The Lord of the Rings films.

Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man franchise died the minute Spider-Man 3 hit theaters. Instead of pushing forward with a fourth Raimi-helmed Spider-Man movie, the studio did the wise thing and went for the re-boot. When Columbia Pictures announced the hiring of (500) Days of Summer director, Marc Webb, my faith in the re-boot was bolstered. When Andrew Garfield was announced as the new Peter Parker/Spider-Man, I started to question my faith. However, after seeing Garfield in both Never Let Me Go and The Social Network, I was utterly convinced he was the perfect choice. Furthermore, the additions of Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Dennis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, Martin Sheen and Sally Field let me know that Marc Webb was ready to amaze. Now this image of Garfield as Spider-Man has hit the web and I am speechless. This looks awesome. I love how there is no nod or homage to Raimi’s films and they have gone with their own unique vision of how Spider-Man should look for this new, sure-fire blockbuster franchise. I simply cannot wait for July 3, 2012. Check out the image below and let me know your thoughts. Excited? Indifferent? Pissed?

Ever wondered what Edward & Bella’s half-vampire, half-human little girl, Renesmee (WTF!), would look like? I know I sure did and now I know! Below is the first-ever image of Renesmee (Mackenzie Foy) from The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2, which hits theaters on November 16, 2012. One thing is certain: Edward and Bella’s love of hanging out in flowering meadows is definitely genetic.
