Wow, how did it get to be January 6, 2012 all of the sudden? Seems like just yesterday I was just wrapping Christmas presents (like I really wrap presents, that’s what wives and kids are for) and starving myself so I could pound down all the holiday goodies my seasonally stretched waistline could muster before popping buttons on my suddenly-tight jeans. Point is this: I haven’t posted a lot at Andy at The Movies.com during the holidays and I have some stale, not-so-newsworthy stories that, while outdated, I’d still like to share with the regular readers at AATM. First up: The Utah Film Critics Association, of which I am a member, met on December 20,, 2011 to hand out accolades to cinema’s best, and, as usual, our eclectic band of movie critics didn’t follow other critics associations and voted outside-the-box, so to speak. Here’s the official press release our group sent to media outlets across the country: The suspense thriller Drive won three awards at the annual meeting of the Utah Film Critics Association, including best picture of 2011. Drive also was recognized for Albert Brooks’ male supporting performance, as well as for Newton Thomas Sigel’s cinematography. Michael Hazanavicius won best achievement in directing for the silent film The Artist. In other performance categories, Michelle Williams won female lead performance for My Week With Marilyn. Amy Ryan received the award for female supporting performance for Win Win, while Joseph Gordon-Levitt won male lead performance for 50/50. Will Reiser’s original screenplay for 50/50 also was recognized, with Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash receiving adapted screenplay honors for The Descendants. Rango took honors for best animated feature. In the documentary feature category, Senna was recognized, while best non-English language feature went to A Separation. The Utah Film Critics Association is made up of film journalists from print, online and broadcast media based in Utah. Members include: Rich Bonaduce, TheReelPlace.com; Luke Hickman, TheReelPlace.com/KEGA-FM; Jimmy Martin, SLUG Magazine/Big Movie Mouth-Off; Sean P. Means, Salt Lake Tribune; Dan Metcalf, KTVX ABC-4; Andy Morgan, KNVU-AM; Ryan Michael Painter, KUTV 2; Aaron Peck, Logan Herald-Journal; Scott Renshaw, Salt Lake City Weekly; Steve Salles, Standard-Examiner (Ogden); Mike Thiriot, KTHB 94.9 FM; Missy Bird, Tooele Transcript-Bulletin; Tony Toscano, Talking Pictures; Jeff Michael Vice, KXRK-FM/Big Movie Mouth-Off; and Doug Wright, KSL Movie Show.

Lets get this out of the way. I hate 3D movies. I saw Chicken Little in 3D years ago and am still trying to recover from the experience. When it comes to 3D movies, I ask myself… Does a movie in 3D add anything to the story that wouldn’t be there in 2D? Most of the time, I think that answer is no. After watching Transformers 3 in 3D earlier this year I promised myself that I would never again watch a 3D movie. Peter Jackson, however, seems intent on making me break that promise. The Hobbit currently filming in New Zealand is being filmed entirely in 3D. Jackson has been documenting the process with short video diaries directly from the set. The fourth video which was released earlier this month describes the process Jackson is using to film in 3D, as well as the reasons why he believes 3D can be a benefit to the story. In the films that I have seen, 3D is used as little more than a gimic. Most films are converted to 3D in post-production with the sole purpose of squeezing more money from increased ticket prices. After watching Jackson’s latest video, I hold out hope that The Hobbit 3D might have what it takes to change my perception of 3D filmmaking. For now, I remain a skeptic. Check out the video and see for yourself. What are your thoughts about 3D? Do you think The Hobbit will be better or worse because of 3D?

Just got done watching the MTV Video Music Awards in anticipation of seeing my first look at footage from the highly-anticipated movie version of The Hunger Games, and all I have to say to the filmmakers is this: Seriously? WTF? I sat through a virtual two hour freakshow so I could see one minute of Jennifer Lawrence running through the woods, mingled with a little Liam Hemsworth voice-over and Rue’s four note whistle? That’s it? Wow. Just wow. This one minute clip (see below) is what you decided to give the world as the first-ever glimpse of The Hunger Games? I wasn’t expecting much, but I wasn’t expecting this. I’m not even sure this qualifies and a tease. No, this 60 second spot at the very end of the most god-awful two hours of television was the epitome of poor planning, terrible execution and nothing short of an opportunity to dazzle gone right down the crapper. I’m just amazed at how unexciting this “first-ever footage” was and that’s coming from a fan of the novels. I have some idea of what’s happening. I can hear Gale talking to Katniss. I know where and what Katniss is doing in the woods. I can hear Rue’s four note little tune at the end. But what about the rest of the viewers who don’t have a clue? Who think Panem is a sandwich and wouldn’t know the difference between Julius Caeser and Caeser Flickerman? I have to think they are feeling unimpressed. So, yeah, boo. Check it out below and thank your lucky stars you don’t have to sit through Kanye, Lady Gaga and 187 cutaways to Kim Kardashian. Barf.

First of all, I don’t get why they are called the Video Music Awards. Did somebody working for MTV type it backwards and had a rough day and the last thing they wanted to do was change it? That would make sense because when I’m at school and I’m way more tired then usual (I wake up at six in the morning people) and then I misspell something I am too lazy to change it. Anyway, some time during the Music Video, sorry I meant Video Music Awards Jennifer Lawrence, who plays Katniss, will come out onto the stage and she will present the first ever sneak peak of The Hunger Games. Feel free to applaud. The only issue I have with this is I really wish Josh Hutcherson, who plays Peeta, would come out also because I’m Team Peeta . Yeah, we all know that’s not the reason why. The Hunger Games comes out on March 21, 2012. It stars Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone), Josh Hutcherson (The Kids Are All Right), Liam Hemsworth (The Last Song), Woodey Harrelson (Zombieland), Stanley Tucci (The Lovely Bones), and Elizabeth Banks (Our Idiot Brother). This by far is one of the best casts of people I have seen in a long time. I love everyone of these actors. So get on your DVR and record the Music Video, sorry I did it again. Okay not really I just think it’s funny. So like I was saying record the Video Music Awards. Oh man, that get’s me every time.

After several months stalled at page 253, I recently finished Stieg Larsson’s first novel in his “Millennium Series,” The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and I am beyond happy I dug in my heels and finished this taut crime thriller. Larsson is impeccably deliberate and loves pacing the reader along methodically. My love of the book is making me super anxious to see David Fincher’s (The Social Network) movie of the same name, due in theaters on December 21, 2011. Given Fincher’s track record, the popularity of the novel and the eclectic cast, it’s hard not to see The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo as a possible Oscar contender. I actually streamed the Swedish film version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo via Netflix (streaming sucks doneky balls, by the way) and fell asleep midway through the movie. I hope that has more to do with subtitles than it does with content. But don’t take my pooh-poohing on the foreign version as commenplace, because RottenTomatoes.com has it at 86% positive and Roger Ebert gave it four out of four stars, becoming in the process, as are many viewers, fond of Noomi Rapace as Elisabeth Salander. It’s Rapace’s portrayal of the punk femme fatale in all three Swedish movie versions of Larsson’s novels that has propelled her into one of Hollywood’s most sought after new talents. Rapace will be seen in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows this December and in Ridley Scott’s Prometheus coming June 2012. Alas, I digress. Many fans of The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest movies don’t think Fincher can measure up to the intensity and brutality displayed vividly in the aforementioned Swedish versions. Not so says Rooney Mara (The Social Network), who is Fincher’s Salander. Talking about the infamous rape scene in The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo, Mara said, ““It was incredibly intense. We did it all in a week — the week of Valentine’s Day, oddly enough. We were working 16 hours a day, and it was really, really challenging, not just emotionally but physically. But it’s such an important scene. We wanted to do everything we could to get that right.” She also says the topless NSFW teaser poster is a good example of the in-your-face storytelling the filmmakers want to bring to the screen. Mara said, ”I understand why there was a lot of controversy. People have a hard time with strong females and with nudity. But I think had I been doing something incredibly violent on the poster, people wouldn’t have had a problem with it. That sort of says a lot about the world that we live in. It’s just a teaser poster. I think it did just that. It teased people.” The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo comes to theaters on December 21, 2011. You can watch the trailer by following this link.

Manohmanohman. So here it is. Our first image from Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel movie, the Superman reboot due in theaters on June 14, 2013, and I’m split between rolling my eyes at Henry Cavill (The Immortals) and his Kryptonian Mitt Romney hairdo, as well as his Superman suit, which looks more like something out of Joel Schumacher’s book of horrors than it does from Christopher Nolan’s book of everything-I-touch-turns-to-gold. However, with that said, I suppose that is the exact reason I don’t fret too much about the final Man of Steel product we’ll see in 2013. Here’s why: 1. Christopher Nolan: Considering the fact all his films are critical and commercial successes and that he and David Goyer came up with the story for Man of Steel and that he’s serving as executive producer, I feel confident the movie will be nothing short of phenomenal. 2. Zack Snyder: Love him or hate him, you can’t deny his style of filmmaking is eye-grabbing and stylish. If anything, Man of Steel will be pretty to watch. 3. The Cast: Henry Cavill (The Immortals), Amy Adams (The Fighter), Kevin Costner (Company Men), Diane Lane (Secretariat), Laurence Fishburne (Contagion), Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road), Julia Ormond and Russell Crowe (The Next Three Days).
Entertainment Weekly revealed their recent cover of Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) and Gale (Liam Hemsworth) from The Hunger Games movie a few days ago, and now they’ve dumped some more juicy images to turn every Hunger Games fan’s underwear into a moist towelette. That’s right. Grab your adult undergarmets STAT! Okay, that might be stretching the excitement a little too much, but the small gallery below should be enough to excite or anger fans of Suzanne Collins’ action packed dystopian novels, The Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay, soon to be released in – not three, but four movies! The first installment, The Hunger Games, hits theaters on March 23, 2012. As I said in my post a few days ago, I think it’s only a matter of time before we see a teaser trailer. What do you think of the images below?

A few months back our pals at Entertainment Weekly got us juiced and jazzed with our first images of Jennifer Lawrence (X-Men: First Class) as Katniss Everdeen, the badass heroine of director Gary Ross’ (Seabiscuit) movie version of the bestselling novel, The Hunger Games – the first movie in a planned quadrilogy. Now EW gives us our first official glimpse at the two men in Katniss’ life – lifelong best buddy, Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth), and the baker’s son and fellow District 12 tribute, Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson). I don’t know about you, but seeing these two in full Panem regalia makes me again tip my hat to the powers-that-be in the casting department. Now all we need is a full-blown teaser trailer for The Hunger Games and we’ll be set. You want my guess? Considering filming for The Hunger Games is halfway completed, and considering much of the Twilight crowd has crossed over into The Hunger Games territory, I’d bet we’d see a teaser trailer with the release of Taylor Lautner’s (Jacob in the Twilight movies) new flick, Abduction, hitting cinemas on September 23, 2011. Take a peek at the picture above. What say ye? Yay or nay?

So you know how everybody was pooping there pants over how the new Superman movie Man of Steel was going to come out next year in December? Well bring out the tissues because they decided to postpone it for six months. I know it’s pathetic and I’m pretty sure they will come out with some explanation why, but I already put it on my calendar in pen. How am I supposed to get that out? Huh Hollywood? Even if I scratch it out there will still be that reminder of what could have been. Now look at the gray background of that Superman picture. Does it look like there’s anything happy about it? No. Another reason people are sad about this is because we will never get to see it according to some ancient wack jobs the world is going to end in December 2012. And it’s around Christmas time. So not only are the children not going to get presents, we aren’t going to be able to see Man of Steel. That’s just great. Man of Steel stars Henry Cavill (Immortals) as Superman, Amy Adams (The Fighter) as Lois Lane, Dianne Lane (Secretariat) as Martha Kent, and Russel Crowe (Robin Hood) as Jor-El with director Zack Snyder who also directed Sucker Punch and 300. So let’s all pray the world will not end in 2012 which thanks to the movie 2012 we all hope will not be as boring and two hours of wasted time. You have no idea how long I’ve waited to say that on a post where millions of people can see it. As always please comment. Just no potty words (cough cough Andrew).

I’ve read Jon Krakauer’s Under the Banner of Heaven and never in a million years did I think it would be brought to life on the big-screen. I also never imagined Ron Howard (Frost/Nixon) would be the man behind the camera for such a disturbing and unsettling story. For those who aren’t familliar with the book, Krakauer – the writer behind Into the Wild and Into Thin Air – weaves the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) alongside the story of two brothers, Ron and Dan Lafferty, who, in the name of of an extreme, fundamentalist form of Mormonism, murdered their brother’s wife and infant daughter. Krakauer also touches on polygamy, a practice discontinued in the late 1800s by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but something fundamentalist Mormons practice and endorse enthusiastically, and also recounts the events of the Mountain Meadows Massacre, a hotly debated event wherein it is alleged that Mormons (under orders from Brigham Young) and Paiute Indians attacked a wagon train – men, women and children – on route from Arkansas to California and killed 120 people in the group. In the end, Krakauer’s investigative book is a riveting read and shows how extremism can warp the minds of seemingly normal men and women and lead them to dark places. It will be interesting to see how Mormons view this movie, as the book was widely criticized as not being a fair account of Latter-day Saint history. Even more so, the screenplay is being written by Dustin Lance Black, a former Mormon, who won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in 2009 for the movie Milk, and who also is a writer and producer for HBO’s Big Love, which follows a fictional polygamist family in Utah. Black also served as narrator for the documentary 8: The Mormon Proposition and has also wrote the screenplay for the upcoming Clint Eastwood biopic, J. Edgar, starring Leonardo DiCaprio as J. Edgar Hoover (releasing on October 21, 2011). What do you think of Under the Banner of Heaven coming to the big screen? Have you read the book? If so, what’s your take?

The Dark Knight Rises teaser trailer debuted in front of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 last Friday and popped up officially online a few days thereafter, and never in my wildest imagination did I think Spider-Man would beat out Batman for my love and attention this week, but boyhowdy, director Marc Webb, the man behind (500) Days of Summer, has fashioned a trailer that is stylistic, brooding, intriguing and makes his re-boot, The Amazing Spider-Man, easily one of the most anticipated movies of 2012. I’m not dumping on Christopher Nolan and the surefire blockbuster that The Dark Knight Rises will surely become. I’m just saying Spider-Man whooped Batman’s ass this week in the battle of teaser trailers. When Andrew Garfield was announced as Peter Parker/Spider-Man last summer, I scratched my head. After watching The Social Network, I understood why Webb chose him as the webslinger. His performance as Eduardo Saverin helped make The Social Network an Oscar contender. Garfield is a fantastic actor and this teaser trailer confirms my hopes. At any rate, as a whole, I like the look and feel of The Amazing Spider-Man. It seems, on first glance, the silliness of Sam Raimi (Spider-Man 1-3) has been replaced with the grittier, real-world feel that Nolan and others have brought to the comic book movie universe over the last several years. I welcome the change and can’t wait to see a longer trailer and, of course, the final product, due in cinemas on July 3, 2012. Take a peek at the trailer below. What are your thoughts?

It’s been awhile since we’ve had any posts about The Hunger Games movie. The cast and crew are busy filming the first installment of a quadrilogy (Lionsgate announced in May the three novels would be split into four films) somewhere in Burke County, North Carolina, and one would think, with a release date of March 23, 2012, that we’d see a teaser trailer within the next two or three months. Despite the slow-going on the news, a motion poster for the movie was revealed (see below) today and the official Hunger Games movie website went online, complete with a countdown widget for fans who are ready to pee their britches with excitement. As I mentioned before, The Hunger Games movie hits theaters on March 23, 2012 and stars Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark, Liam Hemsworth as Gale Hawthorne, Woody Harrelson as Haymitch Abernathy, Elizabeth Banks as Effie Trinket, Donald Sutherland as President Snow, Stanley Tucci as Caeser Flickerman and Lenny Kravitz as Cinna. The Hunger Games is directed by Gary Ross.

Judas H. Priest! I cannot believe I sat through a second showing of Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 just to catch a big screen glimpse of the much-anticipated, long-awaited teaser trailer for The Dark Knight Rises, due in theaters July 20, 2012. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed The Deathly Hallows – Part 2, but I’m no Hogwarts zealot. Once is enough for me. Still, Christopher Nolan’s musk of perfection led me to the theater and I did catch the preview, which clocks in at a little over a minute. Teaser doesn’t even do it justice. If The Dark Knight Rises was a stripper, I got a glimpse of ankle and that’s about it. And from what I’ve seen thus far, I’m torn. Part of me was buoyed and intrigued, the other half was juggling ho-hums and sighs. So what do we gather from the teaser? Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) is in the hospital talking raspy to, we assume, Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale), and sort of simultaneously complaining that Batman went on hiatus and imploring the Caped Crusader to join the fight again. Other than the graphic from the teaser poster, there is no knew footage in the first portion of the teaser, just shots from the other two films and Ra’s al Ghul’s (Liam Neeson) speech about becoming a legend from Batman Begins. I think what I hate most about the teaser and what made me sour was the standard “Every Hero Has a Journey…Every Journey Has an End” text. Did we really need that bit of type? That was the best Nolan and Co. could manage for this first glimpse at the final Batman movie? I don’t like it. It seems easy and cheap. Still, even with that minor complaint, the preview is a teaser and it does just that. We are left to wonder where Batman has gone, what has cropped up since he’s been out of the crimefighting picture, and we’re given a couple quick flashes of Bane (Tom Hardy) to whet our villainous appetite. We’re still left to wonder how Selina Kyle/Catwoman (Anne Hathaway) fits into the picture, as well as how significant the roles of Marion Cotillard (Inception), Juno Temple (Year One) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception) will be in The Dark Knight Rises. Alas, we’ll most likely have to wait until the full trailer is released, and, based on Nolan’s past timelines, I wouldn’t expect that to hit the theaters and the web until this December at the earliest. At any rate, that’s my two-cents. What say ye? Do you like the teaser, or were you disappointed like me?

With the looming Apocalypse/Armageddon in 2012, some folks might find it a tad bit difficult to feel sunny about the future. But take it from me, there is plenty to be excited about for 2012. I mentioned The Dark Knight Rises as my own personal 2012 must-see, but we can’t forget the other movies coming down the pike (The Hunger Games and the Superman reboot, Man of Steel), particularly The Amazing Spider-Man. And, lucky for us, Entertainment Weekly just dropped a whole load of Spider-Man images the latest issue (check out the gallery below). There are so many reasons to believe this re-boot of the Spidey franchise will be nothing short of stellar. From the director, Marc Webb, who dazzled us in 2009 with (500) Days of Summer, to the cast – Andrew Garfield (The Social Network), Emma Stone (Easy A), Rhys Ifans (Greenburg), Martin Sheen (The Departed), Sally Field (Brothers & Sisters) and Dennis Leary (Rescue Me). Plus, the photos tell the tale – this is a new vision and rightly so, because nobody wants any remembrances of Spider-Man 3 in their minds when July 3, 2012 rolls around.
