The Hunger Games movie continues to fill the roles for the film version of Suzanne Collins bestselling young-adult novel of the same name. Emma posted last week about the casting of newcomer Willow Shields as Katniss’ sister, Primrose, and since that news the filmmakers have also cast Katniss and Primrose’s mother (Paula Malcomson), the tributes from District Three (Kahlia Prescott and Ian Nelson), the tributes from District Four (Ethan Jamieson and Tara Macken) and, in what was rumored last week, the very sexy Elizabeth Banks (The Next Three Days) has officially signed on as Katniss and Peeta’s escort, Effie Trinket. As for the latest rumors, the web is astir with rumblings of John C. Reilly (Cyrus, Step Brothers) being offered the role of Haymitch, as well as whisperings of the casting of Woody Harrelson (Zombieland), Lenny Kravitz (Precious) and Stanley Tucci (The Lovely Bones) in unspecified roles, although it was leaked that Harrelson was offered the role of head gamesmaker, Seneca Crane. As for the other two, I could totally see Kravitz as Katniss’ stylist, Cinna, and Tucci would make a fantastic President Snow. And while we wait for more casting confirmations, we can also sit back and giggle that Kristen Bell (When in Rome) is actually campaigning to play Johanna Mason. I’m not a Bell fan – in fact I once said she had ginormous horse teeth – but if she turned up the snooty, she could possibly fit as Johanna. What do you think of the recent castings and the rumors? Who would you pick? The movie rolls into theaters on March 23, 2012 and stars Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone), Josh Hutcherson (The Kids Are All Right) and Liam Hemsworth (The Last Song).

Just how popular are The Hunger Games novels and how explosive will The Hunger Games movie be? Just ask the folks behind Wrath of the Titans, the Clash of the Titans sequel due to hit theaters the same weekend – March 23, 2012 – as Katniss and Co. Wrath of the Titans saw the formidable fan base and hysteria surrounding The Hunger Games and smartly stepped out of the way, moving its swords and sandals mythology a week later, to March 30, 2012. In other news, the story I posted about Jennifer Lawrence – the rumored frontrunner to land the coveted role of Katniss Everdeen – is still true. According to The Los Angeles Times, Lawrence, an Academy Award nominee for her role in Winter’s Bone, is beloved by certain executives at Lionsgate and will most likely be offered the part, but the studio, aware of the movie’s potential to dethrone Twilight, is being extra careful and deliberate in the casting process. As for the other characters, particularly Peeta Mellark and Gale Hawthorne, there isn’t much buzz as to which actor or actors might be leading candidates to land the roles, especially in the case of Gale. Seems everyone wants to play Peeta, including, and most recently, Josh Hutcherson, who can be seen opposite Julianne Moore, Annette Bening, Mark Ruffalo and Mia Wasikowska in The Kids Are All Right. Hutcherson said he’s met with Gary Ross and read an old version of the script and He told reporters at the South by Southwest Film, Interactive and Music Festival that he “[He loves] Peeta. The character is so much who I am—self deprecating, a people person. And he’d be such a great character to play! Like in the third book? Oh my God.” The only other name to surface for the role of Peeta is I Am Number Four star, Alex Pettyfer. With director Gary Ross (Seabiscuit) ready for cameras to start rolling, one can only imagine a flood of casting news should be hitting the web in the very near future. As a fan of the books, I like the careful consideration the filmmakers are giving the franchise and hope all the elements mesh together to make The Hunger Games not only appeal to fans, but non-fans, as well.

Fans of The Hunger Games are going cuckoo at the news that Lionsgate Studios and director Gary Ross have cast Oscar-nominee Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone) as the badass babe from District 12, Katniss Everdeen. Now, when contacted by MTV News, Lionsgate denied no such offers have been made to Ms. Lawrence, but sources say the news is reliable and the 20 year-old actress, soon to be seen as Mystique in X-Men: First Class, is the exact mix of beauty and tenacity the movie is looking for. While True Grit’s Hailee Steinfeld and a few other actresses (possibly Abigail Breslin) were considered, one of the big factors in the decision to cast Lawrence was her age. Apparently 14, the age of Steinfeld and Breslin, was considered too young. Casting a 20 year-old helps the filmmakers widen their search for Peeta and Gale, two huge parts that will need careful casting. The Hunger Games comes to theaters on March 23, 2012 and is supposed to start shooting this spring. The book has been adapted to the screen by its author, Suzanne Collins, and screenwriter Billy Ray. With production soon to begin, these casting rumors are starting to feel more legitimate and, even if they are proven wrong, one thing is certain – we should know who will be playing the main characters rather soon. As for Lawrence, I like the pick and I think she’ll work nicely. Anyone who has seen Winter’s Bone (also distributed by Lionsgate) knows Lawrence can act and has a bright, shiny future in Hollywood. For more on Lawrence, check out the trailer for Winter’s Bone, now available on Blu-ray and DVD, after the jump.

According to Dead Space 2′s in-game calculator, I’ve wasted spent 30 hours of my life, since late January, dismembering necromorphs (see: wetting myself out of fear) and galavanting across The Sprawl, looking like a bad ass space cowboy with my arsenal of limb-slicing weapons. I simply cannot get enough Dead Space. I loved the first game and I’m humping the leg of the second installment (on my fourth play-through). It’s a shooter, it’s a haunted house, it’s a space adventure and is chock full of interstellar zombies and, in this writer’s opinion, a compelling storyline. Add to that an eerie, cinematic score, eye-popping visuals and jaw-dropping attention to detail and it’s safe to say, for me, Dead Space is the new Halo. Still, what does this all mean to a non-gamer? Well, aside from the fact that I want a Dead Space 3 in the worst way, I want a Dead Space movie STAT. And trust me, if you like sci-fi and also like wearing Depends adult diapers to the cineplex, you want this movie, too. But guess what? It’s not going to happen. Really, it’s not. Just ask Halo, Bioshock and Gears of War fans. They’ve been waiting, in the case of Halo, since 2006 for a big screen orgy of grunts, elites, brutes and ol’ Master Chief, and even though it came close to fruition with Peter Jackson and Neill Blomkamp, who went on to kick serious box-office booty with District 9 – best picture booty, in fact, fans were left with blue balls when 20th Century Fox and Universal balked at the massive pricetag and earnings demands Microsoft was championing. Despite its existence in Development Hell, Halo overseer Frank O’ Connor has said the movie still will be made. Rumors of Steven Spielberg’s interest in the franchise have soothed wounded souls from time-to-time, but as of today Halo is dead. And it should be. The Halo flame has been extinguised by the Call of Duty franchise. Microsoft would have to really stir some sustained interest for the movie ever to garner the success it could have obtained in 2007-2008, at the height of Halo 3′s popularity. The same can be said for Bioshock and Gears of War. Both directors originally attached have jettisoned from each project and both movies are stalled and most likely will never be made. While both games have sequels (Bioshock Infinite and Gears of War 3) coming in 2011, it’s hard to imagine the “wow” factor ever being the same as it was in 2007-2008. There is something to be said about timeliness. Studios must strike when the iron is hot, because with the passage of too much time the property wilts from compelling and engaging to just another video game movie waiting to entertain a small horde of fanboys, but destined to fizzle into financial and critical obscurity. So, to the head honchos of Dead Space, learn from the past. Be cautious, sure. But also, be bold. This has the chance to be something...

MGM (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer) announced this past December that it had risen from the bankruptcy ashes and, after some other internal restructuring, the studio is moving forward with James Bond 23 and James Bond 24, as well as the long-awaited, long-planned, two-part return to Middle Earth, The Hobbit. Both franchises hit theaters in November of 2012. Sam Mendes (Away We Go) is directing the next Bond film, whereas Peter Jackson (The Lovely Bones) is directing The Hobbit. The other good news, especially for Red Dawn fans, is that Sony Pictures Entertainment reached an agreement with MGM to distribute the remake of Red Dawn, as well as The Cabin in the Woods. As of this writing, the deal had not been 100 percent formalized. In other news, with a newfound fire, MGM has started the ball rolling on remakes of Poltergeist, Robocop and Mr. Mom – three iconic 80s movies. Aside from my usual guffaws at the lack of creativity and originality in Hollywood, I must admit these remakes are definitely intriguing. Poltergeist scared the crap out of me when I was a kid and I still hate clowns because of this scene. I recently watched this on Blu-ray and even though I basked in the dim light of nostalgia, the Tobe Hooper horror flick does not hold up. I can say the exact same thing about Robocop (especially if Darren Aronofsky directs) and, to a lesser extent, Mr. Mom. What do you think about these remakes? Are there any other 80s movies you’d like to see remade? Are there any movies from the 80s that are untouchable? Lastly, do re-boots and remakes signal that Tinsletown is creatively bankrupt? I like to get worked up about that, but could it be argued that laying out a new vision of a previously told story is, in fact, the epitome of creativity?

Batman and Superman were my favorite superheroes when I was a young boy and they are my favorite good guys as a 36 year-old father-of-two. I can still remember being at the drive-in theater and watching, mouth wide open, Christopher Reeve done the blue suit and red cape and soar to the top of The Daily Planet to rescue Lois Lane. When we got home, I safety-pinned a maroon towel around my neck, donned my blue pajamas (complete with underpants over the bottoms), slapped on my cowboy boots and rescued my sister Jeannie from certain death. I can also remember hoping that Bryan Singer’s 2006 Superman Returns would bring glory once again to the Man of Steel. Sadly, despite the best intentions, it was not to be. Superman Returns just couldn’t quite snag the critical and commercial success that Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins had garnered a year earlier. Flash forward to 2010 and we now have the Superman franchise being rebooted once more, something studios are more apt to do since 2008′s The Incredible Hulk was able to erase the memory of the Ang Lee debacle, Hulk, five years prior. The new Superman film will be titled, wait for it, Superman: Man of Steel, and is helmed by 300 director, Zack Snyder. As I said before, I like this move by Warner Brothers and, frankly, anything that Christopher Nolan endorses (see: touches and turns to gold) gets my stamp of approval also. Nolan could have picked Uwe Boll to direct and I would have put my trust in his vision. This is the long way of saying Snyder has found his Superman/Clark Kent in British actor Henry Cavill. Cavill is an unknown to me, but fans of Showtime’s The Tudors probably know him quite well from the character, Charles Brandon, he played from 2007-2010. You might also recognize Cavill from The Count of Monte Cristo or Stardust. And while this might seem like minor news, it’s big enough to have Entertainment Weekly throw Cavill up on the cover of this week’s issue. I don’t know about you, but the square-jawed Cavill gets my vote. What we don’t know is much about the plot and story of Superman: The Man of Steel. There were early rumors of General Zod returning to battle Supes, and now there are whisperings that Lindsay Lohan will be joining the cast as the evil Kryptonian temptress, Ursa, or, as some on the web have gossiped, as Lois Lane. I don’t doubt that Lohan is a talented actress; I loved her in Mean Girls, but I can’t imagine Snyder adding a walking sideshow to a film the studio can’t afford to botch again. I’m sure we’ll get more casting news soon, but for now, I put my faith in Nolan and trust this new Superman movie will be, hopefully, the best one yet. Superman: The Man of Steel is due to hit theaters in December 2012.

Little by little The Hunger Games movie is starting to gain some speed and movement, something that has to make fans of Suzanne Collins’ novels giddy with joy. First, Gary Ross (Seabiscuit)was chosen to direct, presumably and hopefully, the first of three movies. Ross was given a budget of $60 million and stated he hopes to begin production later this Spring. Since Ross’ hiring, the movie has been confirmed to be PG-13 and recently a casting director – Debra Zane – was hired. Now the big news, aside from all the casting rumors, is The Hunger Games will hit theaters on March 23, 2012, going up against Wrath of the Titans, the sequel to last year’s Clash of the Titans. This is a good sign for The Hunger Games because, as everyone now knows, March is now the unofficial start of summer in Hollywood. Back to those casting rumors. Fans have to hope the recent hiring of a casting director means they’ll soon know who will be playing the beloved characters, particularly, Katniss Everdeen, Peeta Mellark, Gale Hawthorne, Primrose Everdeen, Haymitch Abernathy and President Snow. It’s been well documented at AndyatTheMovies.com on the various casting rumors regarding Katniss Everdeen – the most recent being True Grit star and Oscar nominee, Hailee Steinfeld, but I have yet to speculate on any other character. With that said, recent reports suggest that I Am Number Four and Beastly star, Alex Pettyfer, is up for the role of Peeta Mellark, something I definitely could get behind. I haven’t seen him act, but based solely on looks, I think he’d fit the bill nicely. One rumor I hope isn’t true is the possible casting of Abigail Breslin as Katniss Everdeen. I loved Breslin in Little Miss Sunshine and in Zombieland, but her personality and looks are miles away from what the tough-as-nails Katniss deserves and needs. Are there any other actors and actresses you’d like to see considered for the main characters in The Hunger Games? If you were the casting director, who would you pick?

The Hunger Games, while not on the epic fan level as Twilight or Harry Potter, definitely has a massive fanbase and the filmmakers, specifically director Gary Ross, are not looking, despite the violence and sexuality in the young adult novels, to shaft the teenagers anxiously awaiting the film adaptation. Ross told Entertaintment Weekly the following regarding the rating of The Hunger Games movie: This book means too much to too many teenagers for it not to be PG-13. I don’t need to have a huge budget or make this movie incredibly bloody in order for it to be just as compelling, just as scary, and just as riveting. In other Hunger Games news, a casting rumor is floating around the web universe and it’s one I am crossing my fingers is true. Cinematical and ScreenRant have both done stories about True Grit star, Hailee Steinfeld, as a candidate for the role of 16 year-old bad ass, Katniss Everdeen. Time will tell if this has any truth, but anyone who watched Steinfeld in True Grit knows she has the acting chops and the vim and vigor to nail this role with gusto. See the picture of Hailee Steinfeld below. Could this be Katniss Everdeen, or is there someone else who better fits the bill?

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, when I was a senior in high school, I read a book for the first time in years (without being forced – and even then I slurped up the Cliff’s Notes) and that glorious piece of fiction just so happened to be Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park. In short, and avid Crichton readers and fans know this, the novel was cinematic in scope, fast-paced and kept me flipping pages into the wee hours of the night. It was a summer blockbuster in print and, shortly after finishing the book, I remember thinking if a Jurassic Park movie was made, Steven Spielberg should be the brains behind the lens. That was almost 20 years ago, and somehow, someway, since June of 1993 the franchise has taken a massive nosedive, primarily because of two ridiculous sequels that tarnished everything noteworthy Jurassic Park had benchmarked. How do you go from a eye-popping tyrannosaurus rex eating the tires off a DayGlo Ford Explorer, to environmentalists vs. hunters, gymnastic battles with fearsome velociraptors and William H. Macy and Tea Leoni? Jurassic Park and its sequels are the new Jaws and its sequels. Now, to add further insult to injury, word on the streets is Jurassic Park 4 is in pre-production and is possibly filming at Universal Studios. What makes us think this? Check out this image, courtesy of The Movie Blog.com, that shows some of the attractions at Universal Studios this month. I’ll always go into a beloved franchise’s sequel or prequel with optimism, but like the Jaws sequels, I’m not sure there is any more terror or excitement we can add to the first film without continuing to tarnish the legacy of the original. On a more positive note, it seems we can expect the Jurassic Park trilogy to hit Blu-ray in 2011. Hopefully you can buy them separate, because I refuse to purchase the craptastic third film and even hesitate on the second movie, but my adoration of Spielberg, even his misfires, will probably outweigh my urge to flip the middle finger to The Lost World.

So I finished playing Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II last night, and despite some ho-hum reviews of the game, I was reminded how awesome Star Wars is when George Lucas isn’t sticking his silly, emotionless, underwhelming hands into every nook and cranny of the universe he started back in 1977. Finishing the Starkiller saga reminded me how excited I was at the news of a prequel trilogy and how badly I wanted to embrace them as the new hotness in Star Wars movie magic. Nearly six years removed from Revenge of the Sith, hindsight has proven how lifeless and uninspiring they truly were. It has also made me a cantankerous bastard and a routine flipper-of-the-bird to Flannel Von Meatneck. But I digress. The Force Unleashed II brought to mind a rumor I heard a few weeks back that Old Man Lucas was plotting a new trilogy, presumably episodes VII, VIII and IX (that’s seven, eight and nine to folks illiterate to Roman numerals), to hit theaters sometime around 2015, after the Star Wars saga is prostituted on the big screen once more so Moneybags Lucas can honk the 3D hooter like every other halfwit moviemaker in Hollywood these days. The story also went on to say this new trilogy – which of course was debunked by Lucasfilm – won’t have anything to do with the Skywalker clan. Take the rumor for what it’s worth, but if you’re like me and my pal Roger Ebert, I’d bet big on the likelihood of this happening. Here’s what Ebert said in 2005 in his review of Revenge of the Sith: I said this is not necessarily the last of the Star Wars movies. Although Lucas has absolutely said he is finished with the series, it is inconceivable to me that 20th Century-Fox will willingly abandon the franchise, especially as Lucas has hinted that parts VII, VIII and IX exist at least in his mind. There will be enormous pressure for them to be made, if not by him, then by his deputies. Here’s to hoping Lucas will step aside for the new trilogy and allow some new creative minds a crack at the Star Wars universe. His name will still be attached to the project and he’ll make a grundleload of money, but he’ll avoid going down as both the creator and destroyer of what might have been the world’s greatest sci-fi space opera.

Remember how Men in Black, starring Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith, was an awesome movie and a nice summer surprise back in 1997? Remember how its sequel, Men in Black II, was pure crap? Remember how 3D sucks donkey balls and how Men in Black will be returning for a third time to the big screen, this time dry humping the ever living snot out of Hollywood’s favorite visual gimmick? Don’t get me wrong, thinking of Smith and Jones trying to redeem themselves after 2002′s disaster has some appeal, but not enough to make me giddy with joy for a third MIB movie. Oh, but wait! Stop the presses! There are castings and rumors of castings galore! First and foremost, we know Josh Brolin (Jonah Hex) is already signed, as is Jermaine Clement (The Flying Concords), and both those actors add a little flavor, particularly Clement, to this sequel. You can also add Betty White (The Proposal) and Nicole “Pussycat Doll” Scherzinger to the official cast list, but in what capacity is unknown. As for the rumors, a few weeks ago it was reported Alec Baldwin (30 Rock), Gemma Arterton (Clash of the Titans) Emma Thompson (Nanny McPhee Returns) and Sharlto Copley (District 9) were nanoseconds away from joining the Barry Sonnenfeld sci-fi romp. Unless I missed some piece of news, these castings have not been confirmed and are only rumors, nothing more. Would a third MIB film, in 3D, pumped full of big-name actors make me pine for May 25, 2012. Absolutely not. This movie will hit theaters 10 years after the 2002 dud. I suppose a top-notch screenplay could cause my cold heart to melt, but I highly doubt it. In my opinion, these castings are nothing but polish for a movie that is flimsy from the get-go. Just another example of Hollywood milking the money teat for every last drop.

Ben Affleck to Direct Ken Grimwood’s Replay?

About five years ago my dad recommended I read a book called Replay, by Ken Grimwood. He said it was one of the best books he’d ever read and he gave me his semi-worn copy, published back in 1988. It sat on my bookshelf for the longest time until I wound up sick for a few days and needed some reading material. Here’s what I know: my dad was right, Replay is a fantastic novel. Granted, it’s a little dated, but the emotion and thrust of the Grimwood’s story is hugely relevant. Obviously, my next thought was, “I wonder if Hollywood has plans to turn this into a movie?” As of this writing, there are rumors swirling that Ben Affleck (The Town) is set to star in and direct Replay. The gist of the story is this: What if you could “replay” your life over-and-over again? Sounds enticing, right? You could go back to the past and correct all those mistakes you’ve made and steer your life where you want it to go, all with the benefit of past experience and hindsight as your compass. You could make millions off knowing the future, end up with the person you love the most, help circumvent world tragedies and much, much more. But as the novel’s protagonist soon learns, the replay is a gift and a curse. He died at age 45 and no matter how many times he replays his life, he continues to die at age 45. As the novel soon points out, this becomes heartbreaking. To lose the ones you love over and over again is not a joy any amount of hindsight and course correction can dull. As I said before, this is a great read and a fast one at that. The novel is a little dated, but if you can get past that small hurdle I think you’ll enjoy the book. I’m now eagerly anticipating the movie and hoping, if it’s true, that Ben Affleck can bring some of his Gone Baby Gone and The Town magic to Grimwood’s wonderful piece of fiction.

The Hunger Games movie, still without a confirmed director (although Gary Ross was thought to be in negotiations), apparently has a finished, Suzanne Collins-penned screenplay. We know this because two actresses, Kaya Scodelario and Lyndsy Fonseca, have let it slip they’re in possession of The Hunger Games script. Scodelario tweeted the revelation and Fonseca exposed as much at the New York Comic Con. If this is true, and it seems to be legit, the folks in the casting department at Lionsgate are going the right direction. Just take a peek at the pics below of Scodelario (left) and Fonseca (right). Again, as much as I love Chloe Moretz, the rumors of her as Katniss Everdeen make me a little grumpy. Casting Scodelario or Fonseca would fit the bill of finding an unknown to portray the “girl on fire,” as both actresses resumes, particularly Scodelario’s, are devoid of anything huge and noteworthy. Scodelario got her start on a British television series called Skins and has since appeared in Moon and Clash of the Titans, while Fonseca is probably more recognizable for small roles in Kick-Ass and Hot Tub Time Machine. If I were the casting director for The Hunger Games and had to decide between these two lovely actresses, I would pick Kaya Scodelario in a heartbeat. She has striking, sharp features and an effortless beauty that leads me to believe she could pull of the sweet and salty look and disposition that readers of the novel know inhabits the character of Katniss. Plus, to pull the age card, she’s 18 and Fonseca is 23. Which one of these actresses would you pick as Katniss Everdeen for The Hunger Games movie? If these two aren’t up to snuff, who else would you suggest?

Another day, another Halo movie rumor. Yawn. Ever since Halo: Reach hit stores last month, the question has been raised over-and-over again: When will fans see a Halo movie hit the big screen? I like this question, but the answers that follow is the same hodgepodge of “someday” and “never” that have been burping out of Microsoft since the Peter Jackson-produced, Neill Blomkamp-directed version sent Master Chief’s trip to the cineplex to Development Hell. In fact, that’s a misstatement because there is no development anymore. The Halo movie is dead. Or is it? Remember, more than a year ago, when it was rumored that Steven Spielberg, easily one of the greatest directors in the history of the universe, was having a Cialis moment for Halo? Well, it seems the rumor is aflame again, this time chronicled in-depth by New York Magazine. According to the article, DreamWorks is renewing its efforts to obtain the rights to the Halo movie and are hinging the success of said effort on basing the movie off the novelizations (The Fall of Reach, First Strike, The Flood) and having Spielberg potentially direct. The article gives a nice review of the history behind the movie and offers up some juicy tidbits on who screwed who in the entire debacle. It’s worth the read, especially if you’re a Halo fan. My take: After being prison-raped by a throng of Halo rumors, let alone the collapse of the Jackson/Blomkamp version, I take this with a grain of salt. Sure, I’d love to see a movie get made and I’d run naked through the streets if Steven Spielberg was the man behind the director’s chair (just as long as that God-awful George Lucas was involved), but until I see an official press release from DreamWorks, this will be another rumor and nothing more. Until that day, the Halo movie is dead.
