One of my favorite movies from the 1980s is the horror/comedy, Fright Night. It was released in theaters on August 2, 1985 and starred Chris Sarandon, i.e. Prince Humperdinck from The Princess Bride, William Ragsdale (who can be seen as Gary in the FX series Justified) and Roddy McDowall (best known for his role in the Planet of the Apes movies in the late 1960s an early 1970s). The movie was about a teenage boy who discovers the suave, single guy living next door is a vampire. Since Hollywood is resurrecting everything 80s these days, it’s no surprise a remake was announced and is due in theaters on August 19, 2011. Same basic plot, but now the movie stars Anton Yelchin (Star Trek), Colin Farrell (Crazy Heart), Toni Collette (The United States of Tara), Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Kick-Ass), David Tennant (Doctor Who) and Imogen Poots (Jane Eyre). Check out the trailer below and let me know your thoughts? Have you seen the 1985 version?

Hard to believe Zack Snyder’s 300 was in theaters in March 2007. Seems like just the other day I was at the press screening with hundreds of nerdy fanboys sweating and squealing at the film adaptation of Frank Miller’s classic graphic novel of King Leonidas and his Spartan army. Repeat viewings definitely are not as intense as the first time with 300, but one thing can’t be argued – Snyder’s movie is flat-out sexy. For those who are going through withdrawls and who feel let down with Watchmen or Sucker Punch, good news is coming on in November 11, 2011 via Immortals, directed by another visual mastermind, Tarsem Singh (The Fall). Immortals tells the story of Theseus (Henry Cavill) and his battle with the Titan Hyperion (Mickey Rourke), who, years after the battle with the Gods of Olympus, has declared war on humanity. He’s looking for the Epirus Bow, a magical weapon forged by the God of War, Ares, that will help him free the rest of his Titan pals from Tartarus, a sort of purgatory realm for punishment and torture that lies beneath the underworld. Greek mythology lessons aside, what this means for the viewer is a lot of muscles, sexy Greek babes and tons of action. Oh, and also Mickey Rourke’s creepy collagen-filled lips. It also means we get to see what type of actor Henry Cavill is before he dons the blue tights and red cape in December 2012′s Man of Steel (directed by Zack Snyder). Give the Immortals trailer a peek and let me know what you think. Immortals slides into theaters on November 11, 2011.

How can anyone not absolutely not love Paul Rudd? Has he ever made a bad movie? Other than Dinner for Schmucks, probably not. He was fantastic in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgandy, The 40 Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up, I Love You, Man, and I even enjoyed him in The Oh in Ohio. And let’s not even get started on his cameos. Bottom line: Paul Rudd is gold and is only going to get better. His next movie is Our Idiot Brother – which comes to theaters on August 26, 2011 – and also features the thespian talents of Elizabeth Banks (The Next Three Days), Zooey Deschanel (Your Highness) and Emily Mortimer (Shutter Island). The movie was written by Evgenia Peretz and directed by her brother, Jesse Peretz, who directed the 2007 movie, The Ex. It premired at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. The trailer points out the movie is from the folks that brought you Little Miss Sunshine and the look and feel of Our Idiot Brother seems to be of the same vibe – dark, honest and, hopefully, full of heart. How a movie about a brother who irritates the hell out of his sisters (and who wears some rockin’ Crocs) could be anything but, is beyond me. Take a peek at the trailer below and let us know your thoughts.

“Found footage” movies are all the rage in Hollywood. You can go back as far as The Blair Witch Project, but most recently we’ve seen Cloverfield, Quarantine, Paranormal Activity and Paranormal Activity 2, as well as The Last Exorcism and the upcoming Apollo 18. I love movies like this, so it’s no surprise to me our friends in Norway have become fond of the genre, so much that writer/director André Øvredal has passed up zombies, vampires, poltergeists and aliens for something truly creepy. Yep, trolls. Nope, not these trolls, but rather big, car-crushing, under-the-bridge trolls. Watch the trailer below and you’ll see what I’m talking about. I’m undecided on what to expect after this short preview. The movie is a mockumentary and hits theaters on June 10, 2011, but from what I can gather, the special effects look kind of corny and I’m not 100 percent sure substandard filmmaking elements and a foregin language will translate to box office success. My guess is this will snag the curious types or mega-fans of the genre, but I think the casual filmgoer won’t even know this is on the radar, or care. What about you? What say ye of the trailer?

Mickey Rourke and Megan Fox have more in common than unnatural puffy lips and tons o’ tats, the two actors are starring together in a new movie called Passion Play, which will open in limited release in New York and Los Angeles on May 6, 2011. The movie, also starring Bill Murray, debuted at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival to mainly negative reviews, with comments like “car wreck” and “awful” being the most prevalent. Even Mickey Rourke admits as much, admitting the limited release means the movie “isn’t very good.” Somewhere Michael Bay is grinning and thinking karma is a cold-hearted lover. Passion Play tells the story of Nate (Rourke), a jazz musician, who wanders into a traveling circus and meets and falls in love with The Bird Woman, Lily (Fox). At first Lily gives Nate the cold shoulder, but realizes he might be her escape from this freak show prison. Nate, of course, is in love with Lily’s unique beauty and will do anything to protect her, including face the creepy circus owner, Happy Shannon (Murray). Sound interesting? No? I didn’t think so. This movie sounds batshit crazy. The only thing it’s missing is Chloë Sevigny or James Spader. Also, is it me, or is Megan Fox becoming more freak and plastic by the minute? I thought she was gorgeous in Transformers, but yikes. I was going to make a snide comment about her doing love scenes with Rourke, but then I suppose when your husband is Beverly Hills 90210 alum Brian Austin Green, doing the business with Crazy Mickey probably feels like home. At any rate, I’m going to say there’s no chance in hell I’ll see this movie if and when (read: never) it comes to Cache Valley and/or my local Redbox.

Movies like Crazy Stupid Love, due in theaters on July 29, 2011, make me nervous, especially when I take a liking for the trailer. 99 percent of the time they simply cannot replicate the two and a half minute euphoria they achieved in the trailer, but, as I with Warrior, I’m giving this movie the benefit of the doubt based solely on the cast. Steve Carell (Dinner for Schmucks), Ryan Gosling (Blue Valentine), Julianne Moore (The Kids Are Alright), Emma Stone (Easy A) and Marisa Tomei (The Wrestler) are a talented bunch and I especially like the pairing of funnyman Carell with the more serious Gosling. Crazy Stupid Love follows Cal Weaver (Carell), a guy with a great wife (Moore), great kids, great house and great job. He’s basically living the American dream. This all comes crashing down when his wife of 25 years, Emily, admits to having an affair and asks for a divorce. All of the sudden, Cal faces the harsh realities of being a single, 40-something, recent divorcee, and he discovers mingling and dating isn’t as easy as it once was. Enter Jacob Palmer (Gosling), a smooth, handsome ladies man who takes Cal as his wingman and shows him the ropes. But despite the duo’s bravado, they both have hearts and both seem to be headed towards true love – Palmer with Hannah (Stone), and Weaver with his ex-wife, Emily. This romantic comedy could be trite and cliché and completely lame. The story definitely dips its toes in some treacherous moviemaking waters, but this could and should succeed if the acting is top notch and the story and performances are injected with truth and heart. Here’s to hoping directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (I Love You, Phillip Morris) are able to accomplish this – sad to say – unlikely feat. Take a peek at the trailer and give me your thoughts.

I’ve always been more of a Batman and Superman kind of guy, so I never had much interest in superheroes like Captain America, Wolverine, The Hulk and the whole X-Men gang, although I will admit a fond interest for Wonder Woman, especially the cleavtastic version embodied by Lynda Carter in the mid to late 1970s. Even though I enjoyed Iron Man and its sequel, as well as The Incredible Hulk, I’ve been recalcitrant to embrace the glut of superhero movies coming down the pike. Captain America: The First Avenger was one, especially after the weak Super Bowl commercial, I had zero interest in seeing. Color me corrected. This new, full-length trailer has completely turned me around. Based on this two and half minute preview, this film feels more like Indiana Jones and Marvel had a sweaty one-night stand and the resultant bundle of joy is Captain America: The First Avenger. Plus, it never hurts to showcase the talents of Tommy Lee Jones (In the Valley of Elah) and Stanley Tucci (The Lovely Bones) in your blockbuster action movie. And while I’m still not sold on the directorial talents of Joe Johnston (The Wolfman), I do believe this movie could be a critical and commercial hit. After last year’s bland summer of one-and-done movies, we can only hope. Check out the new Captain America: The First Avenger trailer and, as always, let me know your thoughts.

I’m sorry, but for all the Tom Foolery that was Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, I can’t help but get juiced for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides for a few reasons: One, it’s freaking Pirates of the Hawaii Caribbean, folks! Two, it’s one of the only roles where I actually enjoy – strike that, laud – Johnny Depp as being a good actor. Three, two words: Penelope Cruz. Yum. And finally, it’s summer! Yep, I’m just about done with Old Man Winter kicking me in my balls for the last four months. I’m ready for a season of sunshine. On Stranger Tides is actually based on a 1987 fantasy novel written by Tim Powers, wherein the cast of characters is on a collision course with the fabled Fountain of Youth. The same can be said of Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) in this fourth outing in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Sparrow is joined by newcomers Angelica (Penelope Cruz) and Blackbeard (Ian McShane), as well as familiar faces from the past three movies, Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), Mr. Gibbs (Kevin McNally) and Captain Teague (Keith Richards). Shot in Hawaii (versus the actual Caribbean for the previous three outings) and directed by Rob Marshall (Memoirs of a Geisha), this will be the first Pirates movie presented in 3D and this viewer is hoping an overdose of Hans Zimmer will drown out any 3D inspired hatred. Take a peek at the newest trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and let me know your thoughts. I’m thinking this is going to be, at the least, entertaining. What say ye?

I never saw the 1982 Arnold Schwarzenegger version of Conan the Barbarian. My parents thought the R-rated sword and sorcery flick was a little too violent and a little too boobtastic for my eight year-old eyes. I did, however, see Conan the Destroyer in 1984, but that was PG and had been re-cut by director Richard Fleischer so it could secure the more kid and teen friendly rating. Too bad all those young people can’t exorcise the image of Grace Jones in her armored one-piece warrior thong from their minds. At any rate, after watching the teaser trailer for Conan the Barbarian (in 3D!), something tells me my Conan viewing will have to be limited to everyone’s favorite TBS redhead. I have no clue about the plot and honestly I really don’t care. But here’s what you should know: Conan is played by Jason Momoa. Yeah, I know. I didn’t know who he was either. I Googled him and his claim to fame is a four-year stint on television’s Stargate Atlantis. Rachel Nichols (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra), Stephen Lang (Avatar), Rose McGowan (Machete) and Ron Perlman (Hellboy II: The Golden Army) also star alongside Momoa. The director is Marcus Nispel and he knows a thing or two about remakes, as was behind the lens for both The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th reboots. He did, however, direct Pathfinder, which is actually kind of a cool movie. Check out the trailer and let me know your thoughts. I vote crap. What about you?

Despite fantastic movies such as True Grit, Open Range, The Proposition, No Country for Old Men and Unforgiven, Hollywood has yet to embrace the Western like it once did from about 1950 to 1970. Those were the years of Once Upon a Time in the West, High Noon, The Magnificent Seven and The Searchers. Nowadays, cowboys and Indians have been replaced by superheroes and aliens. I suppose that’s ok, especially in Tinsletown, where the hot commodity seems to recycle. Perhaps with the 2010 success of True Grit the Western is making a comeback. Meek’s Cutoff, which premiered last year at the Toronto Film Festival, hits theaters in limited release on April 8, 2010, and it could very well follow the success Joel and Ethan Coen enjoyed with the seldom-used genre, especially considering Meeks’ Cutoff is directed by Kelly Reichardt, who garnered rave reviews, along with star Michelle Williams (Blue Valentine) for her 2008 movie, Wendy and Lucy. Reichardt has again placed Williams in front of her lens in Meek’s Cutoff, which also stars Bruce Greenwood (Star Trek), Paul Dano (Knight and Day) and Will Patton (Brooklyn’s Finest). Meek’s Cutoff tells the story of a gunslinger, Stephan Meek (Greewood), who leads a wagon train up the Oregon Trail, and chronicles the hardships the convoy encountered while on their trailblazing journey with Meek. 200 wagons and 1,000 people turned off the Oregon Trail and followed Meek into the Oregon desert, where no wagons had ever traveled before. The trailer doesn’t explain too much of the story and is pretty dry, but Williams is easily one of the top actresses working today and I’m hungry for some more Westerns, so I’m going to give Meek’s Cutoff a change. Take a look at the trailer after the jump and tell me what you think? Promising or boring?

Have you ever wondered what E.T. would have been like had he come to Earth as a bug-eyed, three foot tall, pot-smoking, horny, foul-mouthed little alien? No? Me, neither, but fortunately for us Greg Mottola, the director of Superbad and Adventureland, and Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, the acting duo from Shawn of The Dead and Hot Fuzz, have wondered and the result is this (crosses fingers) seemingly hilarious tale of an alien on the lam with two British sci-fi/comic book nerds. Check out the redband trailer for Paul after the jump and let me know if you think this is going to be lame or not. Honestly, I was intrigued by the first trailers, but not estatic. Maybe it’s the scent of spring in the air, but this redband trailer has me embracing the cast (Jason Bateman and Kristen Wiig) and hoping for some good laughs. One thing is for certain: We’d all love to embrace Seth Rogen again after some serious cinematic floppage on his part lately.

Man oh man, I want to embrace the upcoming Thor movie in the worst way, and for three main reasons: First, I dig superhero movies, even though I never had a fondness for Marvel or Thor. Second, I’m keen on seeing how an unorthodox choice for director – Kenneth Branagh (Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets) – stacks up to the gold standard of Nolan and Favreau. Lastly, even though they cast the guy off the Brawny paper towels package as Thor (and his beard and superhero mullet look super lame), the rest of the cast grabs my interest. Yeah, I’m talking about Anthony Hopkins (The Rite), Natalie Portman (Black Swan), Colm Feore (The Chronicles of Riddick), Stellan Skarsgård (Angels & Demons), Rene Russo (Yours, Mine and Ours) and Kat Dennings (Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist). Marvel regulars Samuel L. Jackson, as Nick Fury, and Clark Gregg, as Agent Coulson, show up in Thor, as well. Check out the trailer after the jump and let me know your thoughts. Thor hits theaters on May 6, 2011 and will also be available, sadly, in 3D.

I Am Number Four, like much of what is hitting movie houses now and in the near future, is based off a young adult science fiction novel, written by Pittacus Lore, a pen name used by authors James Frey (the dude who pissed off Oprah) and Jobie Hughes. After a slight bidding war, DreamWorks won the rights to make the film and assigned D.J. Caruso (Eagle Eye) to direct the feature. I Am Number Four stars newcomer Alex Pettyfer (who is also starring in the upcoming film, Beastly, and is also rumored as a possible candidate for playing Peeta Mellark in The Hunger Games movie), Timothy Olyphant (The Crazies), Diana Agron (television’s Glee) and Teresa Palmer (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice). I Am Number Four references the fourth alien out of nine interstellar refugees who fled their planet, Lorien, to hide on Earth. All nine resemble aliens, all have guardians who help them develop their superhuman powers and all are being hunted by some galactic baddies called Mogadorians. This Number Four, named John Smith (Pettyfer), is hiding out in Paradise, Ohio and falls in love with Sarah Hart (Agron), erstwhile waiting to defend himself from the Mogadorians who have him on the next-to-kill-list (apparently you can only kill these aliens in order, and numbers one through three have already been knocked off). Check out the trailer after the jump. I’m not doing cartwheels to see this, which opens on February 18, 2011, but I wouldn’t be opposed to dropping $1 at the Redbox for this alien action flick. Pray tell, what are your thoughts?

I don’t know about you, but I can’t remember the last time Robert Redford actually made a decent movie. Lions for Lambs was blah and The Legend of Bagger Vance was decent enough to wander into thumbs up territory. I’d have to say The Horse Whisperer and Quiz Show were the last movies to showcase Redford’s directorial talent. With his new movie, The Conspirator, due to hit cinemas on April 15, 2011, I’m not sure what we’ll be getting. The trailer looks engaging enough, but then so did the Lions for Lambs preview. The Conspirator stars Robin Wright (State of Play), James McAvoy (The Last Station), Justin Long (Going the Distance), Evan Rachel Wood (The Wrestler), Tom Wilkinson (The Green Hornet), Kevin Kline (The Pink Panther) and Danny Huston (Robin Hood). The movie revolves around Mary Surratt (Wright), who is one of eight people arrested for conspiracy to murder Abraham Lincoln, his vice president and his secretary of state. Surratt is defended by a Civil War hero, Frederick Aiken (McAvoy), who realizes his client is innocent and the whole trial is a ploy to capture the only conspirator to avoid capture, Surratt’s son, John. Check out the trailer after the jump. Again, it looks interesting enough, but I’m not sure I’d be first in line to see this at the theater. What say ye? Does this look like a winner, or another dud from the former Sundance Kid?
