Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy is without a doubt three of my favorite movies of all-time. From the seamless and spectacular meshing of practical and CGI effects, to the breathtaking score and marvelous ensemble acting, there is really nothing I can get riled up about and criticize (except for The Return of The King’s neverending ending). You’d think with my love of the previous trilogy I’d be chomping at the bit to see Peter Jackson venture back to Middle Earth with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again, but I’m not. In fact, I’m slightly worried these two prequels, especially considering they’re being released in 3D, will do for The Lord of the Rings trilogy what the Star Wars prequels did for the original trilogy – sully and corrupt the whole franchise. Don’t get me wrong, I’m more than happy to put my trust in Peter Jackson. His filmography since The Lord of the Rings speaks for itself. King Kong and The Lovely Bones are splendid and underappreciated movies and Jackson is an adept director, but The Hobbit franchise has been a large mess of lawsuits and posturing since 2006, culminating with Guillermo del Toro, whom Jackson handpicked, leaving the project in 2010 and Jackson taking the reigns shortly thereafter. Maybe that’s for the best, but then we have this gawky preview, recently released with The Adventures of Tintin, and frankly, my first viewing of the trailer didn’t help reassure my feelings that The Hobbit isn’t going to live up to expectations. Just because you play familiar music and show our old pal Gandalf and Gollum doesn’t mean outright success. At first glance, this two-plus minute preview seems silly, muddled and too much of a wink-wink to the prior films. However, I had to remind myself this is only a teaser and, in my humble opinion, it does just that. I was also reminded that The Hobbit was written for children and, as such, the material must be digested differently than the heavy-themed, super-violent The Lord of the Rings. Am I excited for these films? Sure, but cautious, zero-expectation excitement is my temperature at this stage. I’m probably in the minority here, because Facebook erupted in hosanna shouts of hallelujah the day the preview released for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, but I have to trust my instincts and at this stage my giddiness for a return to Middle Earth is not where I expected it would be. I’ll reserve total judgment for the next trailer and for the final film on December 14, 2012, but, again, right now I’m collecting splinters on the fence and a cold wind of pessimism is blowing hard into my 3D glasses. Boo.

Wow. Just wow. Wow. Can Christopher Nolan do anything wrong? Has the guy ever made a bad movie? Let me answer: No. He’s this generation’s Steven Spielberg, even his so-so movies are unanimously loved by audiences and critics. The only sad thing is The Dark Knight Rises, if you believe Christian Bale and Nolan, is the last outing in this acclaimed and beloved Batman franchise. So while I’m beyond excited for the release of The Dark Knight Rises on July 20, 2012, it’s also a little bittersweet. By the looks of this full-length trailer, it also might be a big fat punch to the soft parts. We don’t know the full extent of the story, except some of the characters – Bane (Tom Hardy), Catwoman (Anne Hathaway) – and that it’s set eight years after the events of The Dark Knight. From the look of the trailer, Bane (the guy wearing Heath Ledger’s Brokeback Mountain jacket and a futuristic Hannibal Lecter breathing mask) is looking to lay a world of hurt on Gotham and Batman/Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale). Considering we see a smashed cowl in the poster above and a dude, possibly Bruce Wayne/Batman, limping with a cane in, what might be, Wayne Manor, this could be evidence that Nolan and company have possibly incorporated happenings from the 1993 comic, The Man Who Broke the Bat, wherein Bane learns Batman’s secret identity, ambushes him at Wayne Manor and attacks him in the Batcave, breaking his back and leaving him a paraplegic. I’m not sure the timeline of events in The Dark Knight Rises, but I’d bet Batman gets his ass kicked and then comes back for redemption. Take a close look at the trailer below and at the teaser trailer and let me know if you think I’m on the right track. Regardless of the story, I can’t imagine this movie being nothing short of pure win. The Dark Knight Rises is directed by Christopher Nolan and stars Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Gary Oldman and Marion Cotillard. It rolls into theaters on July 20, 2012.

I love me some Ridley Scott, but I must confess, I haven’t been too enamored with The Brother-of Tony’s recent forays into le cinema. Robin Hood? Seemed promising, but didn’t quite hit the ol’ bullseye, despite having Russell Crowe (The Next Three Days) and Cate Blanchett (Hanna), and don’t get me started on Body of Lies or A Good Year. However, my opinion might not be so relevant, considering my favorite Ridley Scott movies are Blackhawk Down and The Kingdom of Heaven. WhaddoIknow, right? I do know this: On June 8, 2012, Scott fans and science fiction fans are going to be hoping Prometheus, the director’s first foray into the genre since 1979′s Alien and 1982′s Blade Runner, is as fantastic as its teaser trailer. Prometheus has been called a prequel to Scott’s Alien, but from what I gather, the term prequel should be used lightly, if at all. As the title suggests (in reference to Greek mythology’s Titan god – the one who stole fire from Zeus and gave it to mankind), the story involves a group of scientists exploring the origins of the human race and it’s ties to the Alien franchise are done via who is the “space jockey” seen in the 1979 movie and what is the purpose of the actual alien creatures. From what I gather, the former were world-builders and the latter were world-cleansers. Regardless, sounds abso-freakin-lutely amazing to this movie lover! I can’t wait! Prometheus stars Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Michael Fassbender (Shame), Guy Pearce (The King’s Speech), Idris Elba (Thor), Logan Marshall-Green (Devil) and Charlize Theron (Young Adult). It hits theaters, as I mentioned before, on June 8, 2012. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’re as stoked as I am about Prometheus!

The first teaser trailer for director Peter Berg’s (Hancock, The Kingdom) Battleship debuted this past July and it was, like the concept of the movie (WTF? Now Hollywood’s basing movies off board games?), a complete traveshamockery. There were ships, Qui-Gon Jinn, the girl with giant hoots that dates that tennis player that looks Sean-William Scott, lots of ocean, lots of CGI and not a whole lot of anything juicy to make me want to fork out my hard-earned cash for a board game turned movie. I was kind of sad, frankly, because I like Peter Berg. He might not be a household name, but The Kingdom, Friday Night Lights and The Rundown are all fairly solid, especially The Kingdom. Lo and behold a new trailer hit the web a few days ago and I’m recanting what I said back in July. Somebody in the Universal Pictures marketing department got his/her sweatpants pulled down and spanked with moon rocks, because this new preview, clocking in at two-and-a-half minutes, is pretty freakin’ sweet. Maybe it’s the Michael Bay fan in me, but aliens, big ships, buildings and cities being waylaid and sweet robotic techno music get my blood boiling for summer. This isn’t an Oscar contender by any stretch of the imagination, but this second trailer makes it look cool and fun, something the first completely missed. I’m okay with Hollywood being creatively bankrupt, just as long as I’m entertained and having fun. Battleship hits theaters on May 18, 2012 and stars Taylor Kitsch (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), Brooklyn Decker (Just Go With It), Alexander Skarsgård (Melancholia), Rihanna and Liam Neeson (Unknown). Check out the trailer below and let me know if I’m right or if I’m completely off my rocker. I say this is a must-see for 2012, what say ye?

When I saw the announcement for Snow White and The Huntsman and read that Kristen Stewart (The Twilight Saga) and Chris Hemsworth (Thor) were attached, I pushed it off as another attempt by a creatively bankrupt Hollywood to milk the teat of fresh faces and old stories yet again. My resistance to a live-action Snow White movie is probably Walt Disney’s fault. It’s hard to think of Snow White and not think of singing dwarfs, poison-apple-pawning grannies and the fair-skinned, cartoon princess we’ve grown to remember and love. A live-action version just felt, I don’t know, cheap and easy. Then I watched the trailer (see below) and now I’m repenting. Color me sold. This movie, coming to theaters June 1, 2012, looks packed with style, action, drama and, based on who is was cast as the seven dwarfs, enough humor and lightheartedness to not make the film too stoic and serious. I could be wrong, especially with the glassy-eyed Stewart as your badass femme fatale, but when I watch the trailer I get more of the Lord of the Rings vibe than I do any hokey Disney fairy tale. This is easily, now, one of my most-anticipated films of 2012. Snow White and The Huntsman stars Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth, Ian McShane, Bob Hoskins, Toby Jones, Ray Winstone and Nick Frost, and hits theaters on June 1, 2012. Check out the trailer below and let me know your thoughts.

Juno is easily one of my favorite movies of all-time. There are a lot of haters out there who thumb their noses and sneer at how beloved the movie is, thinking its success and accolades were nothing more than trendiness run amok, but I beg to thoroughly disagree. The foundation of Juno is heart and truth and when both those are the bedrock for comedy, the emotion of the movie is hammered home and this was easily evident in both critical and non-critical acclaim. That’s the long way of saying the director and screenwriter duo behind Juno, Jason Reitman and Diablo Cody, have teamed up once more for Young Adult, due in theaters on December 16, 2011, just in time for awards season. And judging by Reitman’s track record (Thank You For Smoking, Juno, Up in the Air), the possibilities for Oscar love are pretty high. I’d say the same thing about Diablo Cody, whom, as a writer, I adore, but then she needs to answer for the dreadful Jennifer’s Body. Let’s hope this is her comeback and then we can hang Megan Fox for said craptastic my-best-friend-is-a-man-eating-demon bomb in 2009. Young Adult stars Charlize Theron(The Road), Patrick Wilson (Insidious) and Patton Oswalt (The Informant!), with Theron playing the main character, Mavis Gary, a writer of teen literature who, after her divorce, comes back to her hometown to reclaim her old high school sweetheart (Wilson), who happens to be happily married. During this chaos, Mavis forms an unlikely friendship with a former classmate (Oswalt) who also has run into problems leaving high school behind. I enjoyed the trailer and this red band clip was so-so, but I’m a little undecided on how this movie will play out. I’m optimisitc, but I haven’t seen anything to buoy my hope quite yet. Check out the trailer below and let me know your thoughts.

I hate 3D. I abhor 3D. I absolutely loathe 3D. Am I making my point? It’s gimmicky and adds zero benefit to a movie, except to make a few kids in the audience “oooooooh” and “aaaaaaaaaaah” until the trickery and amusement wears off. With that said, I’m fine with 3D speckling the myriad of cartoons aimed at young kids, but adding it to the Oscar-winning – and damn fine film, I might add – Titanic is nothing more than James Cameron following George “Moneybags Flannel Meatneck” Lucas to the bank and trying to cash in on the 3D lameness and the expensive ticket that goes with the ruined theater experience. Personally, I think this move by Mr. Cameron sullies and cheapens a movie that was deserving of all the awards and accolades it received back in 1997 and 1998. With that said, I’m sure there is someone itching to see Kate Winslet’s infamous Heart of the Ocean booby scene in eye-popping 3D. Let’s see how many adults reach out and say “oooooooh” and “aaaaaahhhh” when that happens! Check out the trailer below. Nothing really new to see, to be quite frank. And if you’ve finally got Celine Dion’s “My Heart will Go On” song out of your head after nearly 14 years, I suggest you move along and find another story or trailer to read and watch. That song is like musical Meth and almost as bad as this little tune that has yet to leave my brain!

Sweet Mary Mother of Moses, it’s about freakin’ time! I’ve been waiting for a full-length trailer for The Hunger Games since the day Jennifer Lawrence was cast as Katniss Everdeen, the heroine of Suzanne Collins’ dystopian series of young adult novels. I wasn’t a huge fan of the teaser trailer shown during the MTV Video Music Awards back in August, but this two minute and thirty seven second preview is well worth the wait. As a huge fan of the books, it’s cool to see a small glimpse of how my favorite characters (Katniss, Peeta, Cinna, Haymitch) and not-so-favorite characters (Gale) translate to the silver screen. After watching this trailer, I just can’t help but extend a big fat bravo to director Gary Ross. This movie is going to make Lionsgate a grundleload of cash and is going to be a massive hit. Check out the trailer for The Hunger Games movie below and let me know your thoughts? What did you like and what was disappointing (if anything!)? I’d have to say my only question mark was with Haymitch (Woody Harrelson). We didn’t get a big dose of him in the trailer and what I saw made me wonder if they missed the mark with casting and character. Bottom line? March 23, 2012 can’t come soon enough!

I’m not sure Carnage will be a box-office success, but I can’t imagine with this cast (and pedophilia-loving director, Roman Polanski) – Jodie Foster (The Brave One), Kate Winslet (The Reader), Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Bastards) and John C. Reilly (Cyrus) – the movie won’t get massive critical praise and, one might assume, Oscar buzz. The story is quite simple: After their children are involved in a schoolyard fight, the two sets of parents meet to discuss what happened and iron out any potential lingering problems. Based on the trailer, and based off my own experience being a parent, this looks to be a hilariously dark comedy and chock full of all the things parents wish they could say about other parents, their kids and life in general. Carnage comes to the big-screen on December 16, 2011. Check out the trailer below.

I’m not on the “OMG! Joss Wedon is the shizniz and the second coming of cinematic Jesus!” bandwagon and I’m not a follower of The Avengers. It’s definitely not a movie I am aching to see in 2012. However, I do like Iron Man and Iron Man 2, Captain America: The First Avenger was one of my favorite movies of Summer 2011 and, well, Scarlett Johansson lights my fires and kicks my tires in the worst way. Seriously, not sure what happened between her and former husband (and my man-crush) Ryan Reynolds, but if she needs a new dude it would just take a text from her for me to pack a suitecase and be on my way. Did I write that out loud? Yes, I did. Whoopseeee. Moving on. For people who don’t have The Avengers Underoos, this elite superhero squad consists of team leader Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo). From the looks of the teaser trailer (see below), the group takes on Loki (Tom Hiddleston), the nasty half-brother of Thor and villain from Summer 2011′s Thor, who is intent on conquering Earth and making its inhabitants his beeotch. I like the trailer and I dig chicks in black leather who know how to use firearms, so this just went from “meh” to “ahhhhhh yeeeeeeaaaah” on my 2012 must-see movie list. The Avengers comes to theaters on May 4, 2012. Check out the trailer and leave your thoughts!

Cameron Crowe is the George Lucas of romance and dramedy. The former and sometimes Rolling Stone magazine writer has made some memorable pop-culture 80s movies – Fast Times and Ridgemont High and Say Anything…, two really fine films – Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous, and then two forgettable movies that had great trailers, lots of potential, but didn’t quite mesh (see Vanilla Sky and Elizabethtown). When I watch the trailer for Crowe’s new movie, We Bought a Zoo, I can’t help but remember his blunders and the heartwarming, tear-wiping trailers that preceded their flops. We Bought a Zoo is based on a memoir about a guy and his family who use their life savings to buy a dilapidated zoo, complete with hundreds of exotic animals, and in the process of restoring the zoo to working order, come to discover life lessons that, according to Crowe’s trailer, should make us laugh, cry, cheer and feel lots of love. Considering it has Matt Damon (Contagion), Scarlett Johansson (Iron Man 2), Elle Fanning (Super 8) and Thomas Haden Church (Easy A), it definitely has the potential to be a holiday success, at least critically. I, for one, am crossing my fingers. Check out the trailer below and let me know what you think? We Bought a Zoo comes to theaters on December 23, 2011.

I’ve noted on AATM before the difficulty I had plowing through Stieg Larsson’s worldwide bestseller, The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo, but I stuck with the book and after the tedious first 250 or so pages the book exploded and I burned through the remaining pages with a feverish, hungry-for-more, pace. I’m currently almost done with the second book, The Girl Who Played with Fire, and am eagerly awaiting David Fincher’s movie version, due to hit theaters on December 21, 2011. The recently released, full-length trailer proudly displays Fincher’s amazing style, eye for detail and smells like a shoe-in for Oscar love come February 2012 (I’d bet Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress for Rooney Mara, as well as screenplay and original score, at the very least). I’m not going to give any of the plot away, but if you’ve read the book, you know how amazing this movie will be. And please, folks, don’t give me the sing-song about how this movie has already been made (the foreign version starring Noomi Rapace) and Fincher should leave well-enough alone. I’ve watched the forgeign version and the subtitles put me to sleep. Sorry, but it’s true. At any rate, check out the trailer below and bask in what is going to be, without a doubt, an amazing movie. Agree? Disagree? Speak up!

The American Pie series of movies (American Pie, American Pie 2, American Wedding) are definitely on my Showcase of Shame – movies that most critics crap on, but I have a soft spot for – and I’m definitely stoked to see the gang from East Great Falls again on the big screen. What makes the American Pie movies so funny and the characters – Stifler (Seann William Scott), Jim (Jason Biggs), Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas), Oz (Chris Klein), Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas) – so memorable is the story is based on real-life experiences of American Pie writer, Adam Hertz. The best humor is always grounded in reality, in my opinion, and even though I graduated in 1992, the high school escapades of this gang of friends rung true to the experiences I enjoyed at good ol’ Logan Senior High School in Logan, Utah. American Reunion, in theaters on April 6, 2012, is the first time since the 1999 original the entire cast has been together. This time around the gang returns to East Great Falls for their high school reunion, and, based on the red band (NSFW) trailer below, there will plenty of jaw-dropping moments to make fans of the series break out the adult undergarmets for laugh-induced pee pee protection. Take a peek at the American Reunion red band trailer and let me know your thoughts – solid gold or solid poop? PS – I’m not sure the trailer’s creators could have picked a better song than R.Kelly’s Bump n’ Grind! Hilarious!

I don’t know about everyone else, but I’m all Twilighted out. I’m Twi-numb. Is anyone even excited for this movie in November, or has the nearly 16 months between Eclipse and Breaking Dawn – Part 1 caused even the most crazy of Twihards to lose a little interest? People were talking about and buzzing about the last cinematic chapter in the Harry Potter franchise for months and months, but I’m hearing hardly any fervor from the masses of Team Jacob and Team Edward fans who seemed at an all time high between New Moon and Eclipse. I’m sure the heat will rise as November 18 approaches, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Breaking Dawn – Part I and Breaking Dawn – Part 2 (due in theaters on November 16, 2012) be the least successful movies of the franchise. Why? Two reasons: First, the story is done. It’s like the Titanic. We all know what happens. Bella and Sparklechest get married. Bella porks out a kid that reminds me a lot of this creepy girl from Dune (all via a vampire c-section, mind you), Jacob imprints said creepy kid and everyone, presumably, lives happily ever after. That’s two movies? Yikes. The second and last reason? Summit made a massive mistake waiting 16 months to release Breaking Dawn – Part 1, and the year wait between Part 1 and Part 2 is the nail in the coffin. But hey, I’m Team Jacob, so what the eff do I know, right? Check out the recently released full-length trailer for Breaking Dawn – Part 1 below and witness Captain Sparklechest demonstrate his headboard smashing skills. I had to ice my loins after watching this because I couldn’t refrain from punching myself in the nuts. True story. Yep. I’m Twi-numb and so is this dead-in-the-water franchise.
