Color Me Not Excited: First Photo of Lone Ranger and Captain Jack Tonto

I wasn’t a kid in the late 1940s and early 1950s when The Lone Ranger was making waves on ABC, nor did I tune in via radio to one of the 2,956 episodes broadcast from 1933 to 1954, so it’s hard to have any nostalgia for a hero people pooping in Depends thought was the real deal. Sure he’s a cowboy and he has a cool mask, but I couldn’t even latch on with the 1981 movie, The Legend of The Lone Ranger. I had more important things to digest entertainment-wise, like Superman, Luke Skywalker and Indiana Jones. But hey, maybe now, 30 something years later, the masked man might get his day in the sun with the Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean, Rango) helmed and Disney-backed version set to hit theaters on May 31, 2013.

The Lone Ranger has been through various stages of Development Hell, but it looks now to be full steam ahead, especially since the first photo of The Lone Ranger (Armie Hammer) and Tonto (Johnny Depp) is online for the world to ogle. Personally, while I’m sure the movie has the potential to be loads of summer fun, especially with Verbinski behind the director’s chair, I have to wince out how much Tonto looks like the Old West version of Captain Jack Sparrow. Maybe it’s just me.

Aside from Armie Hammer (The Social Network) and Johnny Depp (The Rum Diaries), The Lone Ranger stars Tom Wilkinson (The Debt), Helena Bohnam Carter (The King’s Speech) and William Fichtner (Drive Angry).
