5 Broken Cameras 5 Broken Cameras is the most personal documentary I have ever seen. Emad Burnat films years of struggle within his hometown of Bil’in as the Israeli army pushes further into the borders of their city. Emad cycles through five cameras throughout the course of the documentary, and as he says, each camera represents a part of his story. Several of his cameras are shot by Israeli soldiers, another is hit by exploding tear gas. The film begins and ends with images of his five broken cameras, which symbolize the destruction they captured during their lifespan. Emad’s voiceoiver offers the perfect copmliment to the images he captures, removing any need for staged interviews commonly seen in documentary films. Emad doesn’t start out as a professional, but his courage and determination to film while surrounded by chaos allows his ability as a cameraman to develop. Emad began filming when his fourth son, Gibreel, was born. Along with two of Emad’s close friends, he films the struggle as the Israeli army begins to construct a separation barrier that continually encroaches on their city. Emad continually puts himself in harms way in order to film attacks on peaceful protests. As the film progresses, the dangers for Emad and his family begin to grow. Arrests are made daily, children are taken into custody and night raids are a constant threat. The struggle continues down a seemingly endless path, Emad’s friends are held in jail for extended periods, others are wounded or killed. During a Q & A session following the screening Emad answered questions about his experience shooting the film. His answers confirmed his personality that shone through during the film. One man asked how he was able to get so close to the Israeli army during the attacks on his friends and family. His response was simple yet powerful. The city he called home was being taken away from him. He walked next to the soldiers because it was his land they were trespassing on. He understood the dangers he faced every time he went out to film the resistance. Even after urges from his wife to give up filming, he maintained that it was his duty and purpose to film the events. 5 Broken Cameras is a powerful documentary that shows the determination of the people who believe their land is wrongfully being taken from them. Over five years Emad documented a resistance that grew more dangerous by the day. With countless acts of violence and growing despair of those around him, Emad finds hope in the eyes of his youngest son Gibreel.

V/H/S I will admit, found footage films have been a major point a frustration for me over the past decade. Post-Blair Witch, the film style grew to be formulaic and at times impossible to watch. V/H/S arrives at Sundance just in time, thirteen years after the initial run of The Blair Witch Project. V/H/S centers around a group of petty criminals who are sent to an old man’s house to steal a single vhs tape. They are told nothing other than that they will know which tape to take when they see it. After entering the house they find hundreds of tapes and a dead man upstairs, making a quick and easy score much more complicated. Watching the tapes in search of “the one” affords the film the opportunity to show five different short films, each shot by a different director. The narrative of the short films are not connected in any way, but they do share similar themes of murder, betrayal and/or creepy supernatural circumstances. I won’t describe any of the shorts in detail because I feel it might take away from the horror that I experienced during the film. All five shorts stand out in their own way. The “slasher” sequence directed by Glenn McQuaid – featuring a jock, his nerdy friend and a cheerleader — had a slightly confusing plotline, but amazing special effects turned the otherwise simplistic short into a pretty terrifying ten minute sequence. One of the last shorts in the film centers around Emily (Helen Rogers) who communicates with her boyfriend over Skype. Emily believes her apartment is haunted, and frequently hears voices outside her door. The entire short was filmed using only the built-in laptop cameras, but Rogers fantastic performance kept me captivated enough not to be distracted by the slightly lower quality of the video. It has been too long since I have been truly scared while watching a movie, and I am not ashamed to admit that after watching V/H/S, I didn’t want to turn my lights off when I went to bed later that night. I hope that V/H/S is a turning point in the found-footage horror genre. The film is gruesome throughout, full of blood and gore to be expected of any horror film, but I never felt that the gore or violence was used just to be disgusting. V/H/S wildly exceeded my expectations, and I can’t wait for a second screening to see all that I missed while covering my eyes the first time around.

Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy is without a doubt three of my favorite movies of all-time. From the seamless and spectacular meshing of practical and CGI effects, to the breathtaking score and marvelous ensemble acting, there is really nothing I can get riled up about and criticize (except for The Return of The King’s neverending ending). You’d think with my love of the previous trilogy I’d be chomping at the bit to see Peter Jackson venture back to Middle Earth with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again, but I’m not. In fact, I’m slightly worried these two prequels, especially considering they’re being released in 3D, will do for The Lord of the Rings trilogy what the Star Wars prequels did for the original trilogy – sully and corrupt the whole franchise. Don’t get me wrong, I’m more than happy to put my trust in Peter Jackson. His filmography since The Lord of the Rings speaks for itself. King Kong and The Lovely Bones are splendid and underappreciated movies and Jackson is an adept director, but The Hobbit franchise has been a large mess of lawsuits and posturing since 2006, culminating with Guillermo del Toro, whom Jackson handpicked, leaving the project in 2010 and Jackson taking the reigns shortly thereafter. Maybe that’s for the best, but then we have this gawky preview, recently released with The Adventures of Tintin, and frankly, my first viewing of the trailer didn’t help reassure my feelings that The Hobbit isn’t going to live up to expectations. Just because you play familiar music and show our old pal Gandalf and Gollum doesn’t mean outright success. At first glance, this two-plus minute preview seems silly, muddled and too much of a wink-wink to the prior films. However, I had to remind myself this is only a teaser and, in my humble opinion, it does just that. I was also reminded that The Hobbit was written for children and, as such, the material must be digested differently than the heavy-themed, super-violent The Lord of the Rings. Am I excited for these films? Sure, but cautious, zero-expectation excitement is my temperature at this stage. I’m probably in the minority here, because Facebook erupted in hosanna shouts of hallelujah the day the preview released for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, but I have to trust my instincts and at this stage my giddiness for a return to Middle Earth is not where I expected it would be. I’ll reserve total judgment for the next trailer and for the final film on December 14, 2012, but, again, right now I’m collecting splinters on the fence and a cold wind of pessimism is blowing hard into my 3D glasses. Boo.

Wow. Just wow. Wow. Can Christopher Nolan do anything wrong? Has the guy ever made a bad movie? Let me answer: No. He’s this generation’s Steven Spielberg, even his so-so movies are unanimously loved by audiences and critics. The only sad thing is The Dark Knight Rises, if you believe Christian Bale and Nolan, is the last outing in this acclaimed and beloved Batman franchise. So while I’m beyond excited for the release of The Dark Knight Rises on July 20, 2012, it’s also a little bittersweet. By the looks of this full-length trailer, it also might be a big fat punch to the soft parts. We don’t know the full extent of the story, except some of the characters – Bane (Tom Hardy), Catwoman (Anne Hathaway) – and that it’s set eight years after the events of The Dark Knight. From the look of the trailer, Bane (the guy wearing Heath Ledger’s Brokeback Mountain jacket and a futuristic Hannibal Lecter breathing mask) is looking to lay a world of hurt on Gotham and Batman/Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale). Considering we see a smashed cowl in the poster above and a dude, possibly Bruce Wayne/Batman, limping with a cane in, what might be, Wayne Manor, this could be evidence that Nolan and company have possibly incorporated happenings from the 1993 comic, The Man Who Broke the Bat, wherein Bane learns Batman’s secret identity, ambushes him at Wayne Manor and attacks him in the Batcave, breaking his back and leaving him a paraplegic. I’m not sure the timeline of events in The Dark Knight Rises, but I’d bet Batman gets his ass kicked and then comes back for redemption. Take a close look at the trailer below and at the teaser trailer and let me know if you think I’m on the right track. Regardless of the story, I can’t imagine this movie being nothing short of pure win. The Dark Knight Rises is directed by Christopher Nolan and stars Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Gary Oldman and Marion Cotillard. It rolls into theaters on July 20, 2012.

Wow, how did it get to be January 6, 2012 all of the sudden? Seems like just yesterday I was just wrapping Christmas presents (like I really wrap presents, that’s what wives and kids are for) and starving myself so I could pound down all the holiday goodies my seasonally stretched waistline could muster before popping buttons on my suddenly-tight jeans. Point is this: I haven’t posted a lot at Andy at The Movies.com during the holidays and I have some stale, not-so-newsworthy stories that, while outdated, I’d still like to share with the regular readers at AATM. First up: The Utah Film Critics Association, of which I am a member, met on December 20,, 2011 to hand out accolades to cinema’s best, and, as usual, our eclectic band of movie critics didn’t follow other critics associations and voted outside-the-box, so to speak. Here’s the official press release our group sent to media outlets across the country: The suspense thriller Drive won three awards at the annual meeting of the Utah Film Critics Association, including best picture of 2011. Drive also was recognized for Albert Brooks’ male supporting performance, as well as for Newton Thomas Sigel’s cinematography. Michael Hazanavicius won best achievement in directing for the silent film The Artist. In other performance categories, Michelle Williams won female lead performance for My Week With Marilyn. Amy Ryan received the award for female supporting performance for Win Win, while Joseph Gordon-Levitt won male lead performance for 50/50. Will Reiser’s original screenplay for 50/50 also was recognized, with Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash receiving adapted screenplay honors for The Descendants. Rango took honors for best animated feature. In the documentary feature category, Senna was recognized, while best non-English language feature went to A Separation. The Utah Film Critics Association is made up of film journalists from print, online and broadcast media based in Utah. Members include: Rich Bonaduce, TheReelPlace.com; Luke Hickman, TheReelPlace.com/KEGA-FM; Jimmy Martin, SLUG Magazine/Big Movie Mouth-Off; Sean P. Means, Salt Lake Tribune; Dan Metcalf, KTVX ABC-4; Andy Morgan, KNVU-AM; Ryan Michael Painter, KUTV 2; Aaron Peck, Logan Herald-Journal; Scott Renshaw, Salt Lake City Weekly; Steve Salles, Standard-Examiner (Ogden); Mike Thiriot, KTHB 94.9 FM; Missy Bird, Tooele Transcript-Bulletin; Tony Toscano, Talking Pictures; Jeff Michael Vice, KXRK-FM/Big Movie Mouth-Off; and Doug Wright, KSL Movie Show.

I love me some Ridley Scott, but I must confess, I haven’t been too enamored with The Brother-of Tony’s recent forays into le cinema. Robin Hood? Seemed promising, but didn’t quite hit the ol’ bullseye, despite having Russell Crowe (The Next Three Days) and Cate Blanchett (Hanna), and don’t get me started on Body of Lies or A Good Year. However, my opinion might not be so relevant, considering my favorite Ridley Scott movies are Blackhawk Down and The Kingdom of Heaven. WhaddoIknow, right? I do know this: On June 8, 2012, Scott fans and science fiction fans are going to be hoping Prometheus, the director’s first foray into the genre since 1979′s Alien and 1982′s Blade Runner, is as fantastic as its teaser trailer. Prometheus has been called a prequel to Scott’s Alien, but from what I gather, the term prequel should be used lightly, if at all. As the title suggests (in reference to Greek mythology’s Titan god – the one who stole fire from Zeus and gave it to mankind), the story involves a group of scientists exploring the origins of the human race and it’s ties to the Alien franchise are done via who is the “space jockey” seen in the 1979 movie and what is the purpose of the actual alien creatures. From what I gather, the former were world-builders and the latter were world-cleansers. Regardless, sounds abso-freakin-lutely amazing to this movie lover! I can’t wait! Prometheus stars Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Michael Fassbender (Shame), Guy Pearce (The King’s Speech), Idris Elba (Thor), Logan Marshall-Green (Devil) and Charlize Theron (Young Adult). It hits theaters, as I mentioned before, on June 8, 2012. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’re as stoked as I am about Prometheus!

Despite my Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Zodiac, Iron Man and Tropic Thunder love for Robert Downey Jr., as well as an awkward fondness for Jude Law and his crazy hairline, the predecessor for Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, 2009’s Sherlock Holmes, didn’t meet my entertainment litmus test, which means I was lukewarm in my initial viewing, fell asleep in the second and have not watched the movie since, nor do I have plans to pop in the Blu-ray anytime soon. Seems harsh, right? Well, sleepy time at the movies can make me grouchy, because I never fall asleep in the movie theater. Last time? 1979 when I saw Star Trek: The Motion Picture with my dad. True story. As for Sherlock Holmes, most of the time I just couldn’t follow what was happening – the edits sucked, the cinematography was dark – and to be frank, it seemed the story revolved more around how much Downey Jr. the filmmakers could thrust at the viewer than on story. Definitely not one of my favorite films. Sigh. Sad face. Fortunately, or maybe unfortunately in some cases, when a film costs $90 million and it reaps half a billion dollars, sequels are greenlit, budgets are increased ($125 million) and Guy Ritchie gets another change to either delight me or make me cranky. Maybe his 2008 divorce from Madonna is more in the rear view mirror than before, because this time around Ritchie’s A Game of Shadows is crisp, quick, easier to digest and relies more on a plethora of delightful characters and camaraderie than it does on the talents (and overuse) of Downey Jr. Another reason Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows succeeds? The movie’s villain – Professor James Moriarty (Jared Harris) is more like Hannibal Lecter than he is the other film’s mysterious baddie, Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong), and Harris projects this confident sinister ambience in every scene he inhabits. Also, fans of the first movie should remember Moriarty was teased as the next bad guy, as Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams) revealed to Holmes (Downey Jr.) the prominent professor was and is her employer and that he would be a formidable rival to London’s greatest detective. And this is where the story begins with A Game of Shadows: Holmes is investigating bombings aroundEurope and believes they are being devised by Moriarty. Of course Holmes’ trustworthy partner and friend, Dr. Watson (Jude Law) – and his lovely fiancé, Mary (Kelly Reilly) get roped into a post-wedding adventure across Europe that finds the group mingling with gypsies inParis, including Sim (Noomi Rapace), and trekking off toGermany to discover Moriarty’s evil designs. I’ll leave the storyline alone, as I don’t want to spoil any surprises, twists and turns, but suffice it to say, this is one of those rare times a the sequel is absolutely better than the original. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows is a complete movie – action, laughs, a smidgen of romance – and all told with Ritchie’s unique flair...

The first teaser trailer for director Peter Berg’s (Hancock, The Kingdom) Battleship debuted this past July and it was, like the concept of the movie (WTF? Now Hollywood’s basing movies off board games?), a complete traveshamockery. There were ships, Qui-Gon Jinn, the girl with giant hoots that dates that tennis player that looks Sean-William Scott, lots of ocean, lots of CGI and not a whole lot of anything juicy to make me want to fork out my hard-earned cash for a board game turned movie. I was kind of sad, frankly, because I like Peter Berg. He might not be a household name, but The Kingdom, Friday Night Lights and The Rundown are all fairly solid, especially The Kingdom. Lo and behold a new trailer hit the web a few days ago and I’m recanting what I said back in July. Somebody in the Universal Pictures marketing department got his/her sweatpants pulled down and spanked with moon rocks, because this new preview, clocking in at two-and-a-half minutes, is pretty freakin’ sweet. Maybe it’s the Michael Bay fan in me, but aliens, big ships, buildings and cities being waylaid and sweet robotic techno music get my blood boiling for summer. This isn’t an Oscar contender by any stretch of the imagination, but this second trailer makes it look cool and fun, something the first completely missed. I’m okay with Hollywood being creatively bankrupt, just as long as I’m entertained and having fun. Battleship hits theaters on May 18, 2012 and stars Taylor Kitsch (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), Brooklyn Decker (Just Go With It), Alexander Skarsgård (Melancholia), Rihanna and Liam Neeson (Unknown). Check out the trailer below and let me know if I’m right or if I’m completely off my rocker. I say this is a must-see for 2012, what say ye?

When I saw the announcement for Snow White and The Huntsman and read that Kristen Stewart (The Twilight Saga) and Chris Hemsworth (Thor) were attached, I pushed it off as another attempt by a creatively bankrupt Hollywood to milk the teat of fresh faces and old stories yet again. My resistance to a live-action Snow White movie is probably Walt Disney’s fault. It’s hard to think of Snow White and not think of singing dwarfs, poison-apple-pawning grannies and the fair-skinned, cartoon princess we’ve grown to remember and love. A live-action version just felt, I don’t know, cheap and easy. Then I watched the trailer (see below) and now I’m repenting. Color me sold. This movie, coming to theaters June 1, 2012, looks packed with style, action, drama and, based on who is was cast as the seven dwarfs, enough humor and lightheartedness to not make the film too stoic and serious. I could be wrong, especially with the glassy-eyed Stewart as your badass femme fatale, but when I watch the trailer I get more of the Lord of the Rings vibe than I do any hokey Disney fairy tale. This is easily, now, one of my most-anticipated films of 2012. Snow White and The Huntsman stars Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth, Ian McShane, Bob Hoskins, Toby Jones, Ray Winstone and Nick Frost, and hits theaters on June 1, 2012. Check out the trailer below and let me know your thoughts.

Juno is easily one of my favorite movies of all-time. There are a lot of haters out there who thumb their noses and sneer at how beloved the movie is, thinking its success and accolades were nothing more than trendiness run amok, but I beg to thoroughly disagree. The foundation of Juno is heart and truth and when both those are the bedrock for comedy, the emotion of the movie is hammered home and this was easily evident in both critical and non-critical acclaim. That’s the long way of saying the director and screenwriter duo behind Juno, Jason Reitman and Diablo Cody, have teamed up once more for Young Adult, due in theaters on December 16, 2011, just in time for awards season. And judging by Reitman’s track record (Thank You For Smoking, Juno, Up in the Air), the possibilities for Oscar love are pretty high. I’d say the same thing about Diablo Cody, whom, as a writer, I adore, but then she needs to answer for the dreadful Jennifer’s Body. Let’s hope this is her comeback and then we can hang Megan Fox for said craptastic my-best-friend-is-a-man-eating-demon bomb in 2009. Young Adult stars Charlize Theron(The Road), Patrick Wilson (Insidious) and Patton Oswalt (The Informant!), with Theron playing the main character, Mavis Gary, a writer of teen literature who, after her divorce, comes back to her hometown to reclaim her old high school sweetheart (Wilson), who happens to be happily married. During this chaos, Mavis forms an unlikely friendship with a former classmate (Oswalt) who also has run into problems leaving high school behind. I enjoyed the trailer and this red band clip was so-so, but I’m a little undecided on how this movie will play out. I’m optimisitc, but I haven’t seen anything to buoy my hope quite yet. Check out the trailer below and let me know your thoughts.

These posters have been online for a month or more, but because I’m a serious slacker I haven’t posted them here at AATM yet. I love the design of these posters, and while we’ve seen these characters (and more) in the full-length trailer for The Hunger Games, these one-sheets (going L to R) for Cinna, Cato, Effie, Katniss, Gale, Peeta, Rue and Haymitch, show a more detailed glimpse of the heroes and villains we’ll see when The Hunger Games hits theaters on March 23, 2012. Honestly, from what I’ve seen thus far, I like the way director Gary Ross and his crew have brought these memorable protangonists to life, with one exception: Haymitch. Perhaps I’ll change my mind when I see him on the big screen, but thus far – in the trailer and poster – I’m not a fan of the way Woody Harrelson is channeling the crusty old drunk, Haymitch Abernathy. Not. A. Fan. What do YOU think? Do you like the way these characters are portrayed, or did the filmmakers miss the mark?

I hate 3D. I abhor 3D. I absolutely loathe 3D. Am I making my point? It’s gimmicky and adds zero benefit to a movie, except to make a few kids in the audience “oooooooh” and “aaaaaaaaaaah” until the trickery and amusement wears off. With that said, I’m fine with 3D speckling the myriad of cartoons aimed at young kids, but adding it to the Oscar-winning – and damn fine film, I might add – Titanic is nothing more than James Cameron following George “Moneybags Flannel Meatneck” Lucas to the bank and trying to cash in on the 3D lameness and the expensive ticket that goes with the ruined theater experience. Personally, I think this move by Mr. Cameron sullies and cheapens a movie that was deserving of all the awards and accolades it received back in 1997 and 1998. With that said, I’m sure there is someone itching to see Kate Winslet’s infamous Heart of the Ocean booby scene in eye-popping 3D. Let’s see how many adults reach out and say “oooooooh” and “aaaaaahhhh” when that happens! Check out the trailer below. Nothing really new to see, to be quite frank. And if you’ve finally got Celine Dion’s “My Heart will Go On” song out of your head after nearly 14 years, I suggest you move along and find another story or trailer to read and watch. That song is like musical Meth and almost as bad as this little tune that has yet to leave my brain!

Sweet Mary Mother of Moses, it’s about freakin’ time! I’ve been waiting for a full-length trailer for The Hunger Games since the day Jennifer Lawrence was cast as Katniss Everdeen, the heroine of Suzanne Collins’ dystopian series of young adult novels. I wasn’t a huge fan of the teaser trailer shown during the MTV Video Music Awards back in August, but this two minute and thirty seven second preview is well worth the wait. As a huge fan of the books, it’s cool to see a small glimpse of how my favorite characters (Katniss, Peeta, Cinna, Haymitch) and not-so-favorite characters (Gale) translate to the silver screen. After watching this trailer, I just can’t help but extend a big fat bravo to director Gary Ross. This movie is going to make Lionsgate a grundleload of cash and is going to be a massive hit. Check out the trailer for The Hunger Games movie below and let me know your thoughts? What did you like and what was disappointing (if anything!)? I’d have to say my only question mark was with Haymitch (Woody Harrelson). We didn’t get a big dose of him in the trailer and what I saw made me wonder if they missed the mark with casting and character. Bottom line? March 23, 2012 can’t come soon enough!

Lets get this out of the way. I hate 3D movies. I saw Chicken Little in 3D years ago and am still trying to recover from the experience. When it comes to 3D movies, I ask myself… Does a movie in 3D add anything to the story that wouldn’t be there in 2D? Most of the time, I think that answer is no. After watching Transformers 3 in 3D earlier this year I promised myself that I would never again watch a 3D movie. Peter Jackson, however, seems intent on making me break that promise. The Hobbit currently filming in New Zealand is being filmed entirely in 3D. Jackson has been documenting the process with short video diaries directly from the set. The fourth video which was released earlier this month describes the process Jackson is using to film in 3D, as well as the reasons why he believes 3D can be a benefit to the story. In the films that I have seen, 3D is used as little more than a gimic. Most films are converted to 3D in post-production with the sole purpose of squeezing more money from increased ticket prices. After watching Jackson’s latest video, I hold out hope that The Hobbit 3D might have what it takes to change my perception of 3D filmmaking. For now, I remain a skeptic. Check out the video and see for yourself. What are your thoughts about 3D? Do you think The Hobbit will be better or worse because of 3D?
