Every single time a plucky, happy, love-is-magic, life-is-wonderful trailer crosses my view, I have to remind myself of Vanilla Sky, the 2001 Tom Cruise and Cameron Crowe disaster, which, based on the trailer, I thought was going to be Oscar winning cinema. Maybe it was Penelope Cruz and her Spanish charms, or maybe it was Peter Gabriel crooning “Solsbury Hill,” but I was convinced it was pure gold and then subsequently kicked smack dab in the gonads. 10 years later I’ve become what I’d call a hopeful skeptic. Such is the case with Ruby Sparks, due in theaters, albeit a limited release, on July 25, 2012. Ruby Sparks tells the story of a struggling writer (Paul Dano) who creates a character, the aforementioned Miss Sparks (Zoe Kazan), and, after beginning to fall in love with Ruby, finds her in his apartment, from the pages of his novel to flesh and blood. As a writer, I love the concept behind this movie, from the husband and wife directing duo Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, who received oodles of acclaim back in 2006 for Little Miss Sunshine, also starring Paul Dano. Although, to be honest, I wish the trailer had skipped hyping “from the directors of Little Miss Sunshine” and instead said “from the directors of Extreme’s More Than Words music video.” That would have guaranteed my ticket purchase. Take a peek at the trailer below and share your thoughts. Yay or nay?

There’s some uproar on the web since the latest and longest and most revealing trailer for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN went live, and I have to say, I completely disagree with the people pooping their drawers over the change in the origin of Peter Parker’s superpowers. As you will see in the trailer below – ahem, spoiler alert – we can pretty well surmise that a bite from a radioactive spider doesn’t give Mr. Parker his web-slinging abilities, but rather the bite activates something already present in his DNA, something implanted there by his father. This is the thematic change that has diehard Spider-Man fans not pleased. I’d say this change in story actually makes me more excited to see this possibly-too-soon reboot of the Spider-Man franchise. I like that it has fresh faces (Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen and Sally Field) and I like the writers (James Vanderbilt, Alivin Sargent and Steve Kloves) taking this story down a different road. I do think it is too soon for a reboot, and I think that’s why the general consensus on THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN is a resounding “meh,” but I write that and then I remember the monstrosity called SPIDER-MAN 3 and feel the urge to high-five Columbia Pictures and director Marc Webb ((500) DAYS OF SUMMER). Anything to rinse the dry-heave-inducing taste in my mouth from the failure that was Sam Raimi’s last stab at Spidey. Take a peek at the trailer below and let me know your thoughts.

Remember back in 2006, a year before the release of the XBOX 360 game, Halo 3, when Peter Jackson brought every Master Chief-worshipping fanboy to the verge of nerdgasm with his announcement that he’d be producing a Neill Blomkamp-helmed (District 9) big-budget, live-action version of one of the most popular video-game franchises of all-time? I remember those days with fondness. I remember the haters crapping on Blomkamp’s lack of experience and I remember me giving them the bird when District 9 was nominated for a best picture Oscar in 2010. I also remember when the Halo movie took its final turns around the cinematic toilet bowl, finally being flushed into the sewer of development hell, where it remains today as a bitter, angry alligator, just waiting for the right person to come a long and resurrect it from obscurity. Since the Halo movie’s death in 2009, I’ve maintained its window of popularity has officially closed. Sure, Halo: ODST and Halo: Reach have had some success, but those games, including last fall’s Halo: Combat Evolved anniversary release, have been trumped by the leviathan known as Call of Duty. However, with the announcement of a new Halo trilogy and the first game, Halo 4, hitting store shelves on November 6, 2012, the tide may be turning for the once popular game franchise and, if you believe 343 Industries Matt McCloskey, director of franchise business management, it’s not a matter of if, but of when, especially considering the live-action web series, called Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn, Microsoft will roll out on XBOX Live and Machinima.com for five weeks leading up to the release of Halo 4. Each episode will be 15 minutes long and will follow the story of a young UNSC cadet who was inspired by Master Chief and rises to UNSC leadership because of the Spartan’s influence. Frank O’ Connor, franchise development director at 343 Industries, says the web series will please both hardcore Halo fans and newbies taking their first steps into the vast and varied universe of Halo. Me? I’d be lying if I said the picture above doesn’t get my juices flowing, but I’ve said that before and been burned by overhype. I’ll buy Halo 4 and I’ll cross my fingers for a movie, but until the cameras roll, my hopes will stay buried and I’ll get my fix via these 15 minute web vignettes. What do you think? Is a Halo movie even relevant anymore?

Alien, Aliens and, gulp, even Alien 3 (notice how I didn’t mention the abomination called Alien Resurrection) have a special place in my Blu-ray collection and the sci-fi nerd inside me goes bananas as they play out on my 50 inch plasma TV. There are plenty of movies that do not hold up after the passage of time, but these three, particularly Alien and Aliens, hold up after, in the case of Alien, the passage of 30-plus years. I mention this because you need to understand the kind of Viagra moment my inner (and outer) nerd is having after watching the full trailer for Ridley Scott’s Alien prequel, Prometheus. I don’t know what it is, but unexplored worlds in unexplored galaxies, ancient alien spacecraft, dark caves and malevolent creatures, Charlize Theron in a skintight spacesuit, explosions and butt-puckering action and terror make me suddenly place Prometheus right in line with The Dark Knight Rises as my most anticipated summer 2012 movie. I think when you watch the trailer below, you’ll agree.

I wasn’t a kid in the late 1940s and early 1950s when The Lone Ranger was making waves on ABC, nor did I tune in via radio to one of the 2,956 episodes broadcast from 1933 to 1954, so it’s hard to have any nostalgia for a hero people pooping in Depends thought was the real deal. Sure he’s a cowboy and he has a cool mask, but I couldn’t even latch on with the 1981 movie, The Legend of The Lone Ranger. I had more important things to digest entertainment-wise, like Superman, Luke Skywalker and Indiana Jones. But hey, maybe now, 30 something years later, the masked man might get his day in the sun with the Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean, Rango) helmed and Disney-backed version set to hit theaters on May 31, 2013. The Lone Ranger has been through various stages of Development Hell, but it looks now to be full steam ahead, especially since the first photo of The Lone Ranger (Armie Hammer) and Tonto (Johnny Depp) is online for the world to ogle. Personally, while I’m sure the movie has the potential to be loads of summer fun, especially with Verbinski behind the director’s chair, I have to wince out how much Tonto looks like the Old West version of Captain Jack Sparrow. Maybe it’s just me. Aside from Armie Hammer (The Social Network) and Johnny Depp (The Rum Diaries), The Lone Ranger stars Tom Wilkinson (The Debt), Helena Bohnam Carter (The King’s Speech) and William Fichtner (Drive Angry).

I will start by posing a question to Ridley Scott… Why has it taken you so long to decide to revive the sci-fi genre… again. A short trailer of the upcoming “full trailer” for Prometheus has been released online. Yes, you heard me correctly, a trailer for the trailer has been released. It has been a long time since Scott’s Alien and BladeRunner set the standard for science fiction, and several of his recent films have been underwhelming… Robin Hood, Body of Lies, etc. There is about 20 seconds of never before seen footage in this short trailer, and every second is a fan-boys dream. Scott is holding a premiere for the full trailer March 17th in Anaheim, and the trailer will be online immediately following the event. Check out the trailer trailer below.

Peter Jackson is awesome. I can’t think of another director that has involved the fans to the level that Jackson has during the filming of The Hobbit. I have loved each of the set videos he has released. Now, to be clear, I have watched all of the bonus material for the Lord of the Rings trilogy multiple times. I am not normally a behind the scenes junkie. Often times behind the scenes material is a mix of a bad History channel documentary and sub-ChuckECheese production value. Jackson, however, plans ahead and spends a lot of time (and I assume money) developing behind the scenes extras. In set video #4 Jackson even managed to get me excited about seeing The Hobbit films in 3D… I hate 3D. I think it is an overpriced gimmick that adds nothing other than a headache to my viewing experience. That being said, I don’t believe Peter Jackson would use 3D unless he truly thought it would add to the visual experience of the films. Like set video #4 (3D), each video has focused on a different stage of the development and production process. The most recent video was the second part of location shooting, which takes place all across New Zealand. The landscapes in New Zealand are truly unbelievable and the new video contains footage from scenes that readers of the book will appreciate. My favorite happened to include a few dwarves inside of some oversized barrels. Andy Serkis (Gollum) is the 2nd unit Director, and luckily got to fly around New Zealand in a helicopter filming landscapes for the films. I wonder how hard Jackson had to twist Serkis’ arm for him to accept that gig. When Jackson finished shooting this set video, they were on day 127 of production, and had 100 days left to film. The first film… The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be released on December 14th, 2012. Hopefully Jackson will release a few more set videos to keep us satisfied for another ten months. Check out the video (and links to previous set videos) below. Set Video #1 Set Video #2 Set Video #3 Set Video #4 Set Video #5

I, like others have been cautiously skeptical about Ridley Scott’s upcoming “prequel” to his massively popular Alien. I love the cast Scott has assembled, Michael Fassenberner and Idris Elba are two amazing actors who have yet to dissapoint me. I have been dissapointed with so many remakes/rehashes/reboots over the past decade, I didn’t want to suffer another let down by one of my favorite directors… yes I am talking to you Tim Burton (Planet of the Apes, Alice in Wonderland). I will admit, after the first trailer for Prometheus was released the sci-fi nerd inside of me was intrigued. There have just been so few sci-fi films worth remembering over the past decade. District 9 back in 2009 was the last that really left a mark. Peter Weyland (Guy Pearce), however, just turned what little hope I had for Prometheus into a full blown nerdgasm of excitement. The trailer is simple, and doesn’t give away any key plot points (so far as I can tell). Pearce delivers an eloquent, hypnotic and somehow terrifying speech about technology and its origin. The final line is truly quite amazing, so I will hold back my urge to spoil it for you. June 8th can’t come fast enough. If we are lucky, Scott will give us a few more ads to devour before the film is released.

Fans of the Jason Bourne movies (based of the novels by Robert Ludlum) – The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum – have a hard time seeing the franchise moving forward without the ever-likable and ever-talented Matt Damon (We Bought a Zoo), but I’m here to say this summer’s fourth installment, a spin-off called The Bourne Legacy, looks absolutely amazing. And really, how could it not be anything but spectacular? It’s directed and written by Tony Gilroy, the screenwriter behind the previous three movies and the director of one of my favorite films, Michael Clayton, and the movie also boasts an eclectic cast of thespians, headlined by Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker), Rachel Weisz (The Lovely Bones), Edward Norton (Leaves of Grass), Joan Allen (The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum), David Strathairn (The Bourne Ultimatum), Albert Finney (The Bourne Ultimatum) and Scott Glenn (The Bourne Ultimatum). Not much is given by way of plot and story details, but it sounds like Renner plays another secret government assassin, Aaron Cross, created by the same group, Treadstone, that developed Jason Bourne. In the trailer Norton’s character calls him “an outcome agent” and a female voice is heard saying he’s “Treadstone without the inconsistency.” I don’t know what all this means, but with a first-rate director, a stellar cast and a kick-ass trailer, this movie just vaulted on to my summer 2012 must-see list. I think you’ll agree. Check out the trailer below. The Bourne Legacy hits theaters on August 3, 2012.

I have no problem whatsoever admitting my addiction to “found footage” films, at least the ones that seem to promise bum-puckering goodness, like The Paranormal Activity trilogy. I get guffawed at quite a bit because lots of folks think movies of this nature are cheesy and predictable. I couldn’t agree more, but aren’t haunted houses the same way? Still, we squeal and giggle and hide our eyes, because it’s not so much about what’s happening as the experience itself. And I’m giddy right now because I won’t have to wait until next October for the inevitable Paranormal Activity 4 and get my fix on March 9, 2012 with the release of Silent House, starring Elizabeth Olsen, the newcomer, and sister of Mary Kate and Ashley, who burst on to the Hollywood scene after she dazzled critics and audiences in Martha Marcy May Marlene. Silent House is actually a remake of a 2010 Uruguayan horror film called The Silent House. The idea behind the movie is the events unfolding are happening in real-time, i.e. the entire 88 minutes of the movie. The plot, supposedly based off real events that occurred in the 1940s, revolves around a father and daughter who, amidst restoring an old house, discover some nasty secrets and, it seems from the trailer, some equally nefarious inhabitants. Silent House is directed by Chris Kentis and Laura Lau, who premiered the remake at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. Kentis, you may remember, is responsible for another cheek-clinching film back in 2004, the stranded in the middle of the ocean thriller, Open Water. So far reviews seem to be thumbs up for Silent House and you can bet I’ll be first-in-line to see this. Check back on March 9, 2012 for my review, but today take a peek at the trailer below and let me know if you need to borrow my Metamucil and Vaseline.

5 Broken Cameras 5 Broken Cameras is the most personal documentary I have ever seen. Emad Burnat films years of struggle within his hometown of Bil’in as the Israeli army pushes further into the borders of their city. Emad cycles through five cameras throughout the course of the documentary, and as he says, each camera represents a part of his story. Several of his cameras are shot by Israeli soldiers, another is hit by exploding tear gas. The film begins and ends with images of his five broken cameras, which symbolize the destruction they captured during their lifespan. Emad’s voiceoiver offers the perfect copmliment to the images he captures, removing any need for staged interviews commonly seen in documentary films. Emad doesn’t start out as a professional, but his courage and determination to film while surrounded by chaos allows his ability as a cameraman to develop. Emad began filming when his fourth son, Gibreel, was born. Along with two of Emad’s close friends, he films the struggle as the Israeli army begins to construct a separation barrier that continually encroaches on their city. Emad continually puts himself in harms way in order to film attacks on peaceful protests. As the film progresses, the dangers for Emad and his family begin to grow. Arrests are made daily, children are taken into custody and night raids are a constant threat. The struggle continues down a seemingly endless path, Emad’s friends are held in jail for extended periods, others are wounded or killed. During a Q & A session following the screening Emad answered questions about his experience shooting the film. His answers confirmed his personality that shone through during the film. One man asked how he was able to get so close to the Israeli army during the attacks on his friends and family. His response was simple yet powerful. The city he called home was being taken away from him. He walked next to the soldiers because it was his land they were trespassing on. He understood the dangers he faced every time he went out to film the resistance. Even after urges from his wife to give up filming, he maintained that it was his duty and purpose to film the events. 5 Broken Cameras is a powerful documentary that shows the determination of the people who believe their land is wrongfully being taken from them. Over five years Emad documented a resistance that grew more dangerous by the day. With countless acts of violence and growing despair of those around him, Emad finds hope in the eyes of his youngest son Gibreel.

V/H/S I will admit, found footage films have been a major point a frustration for me over the past decade. Post-Blair Witch, the film style grew to be formulaic and at times impossible to watch. V/H/S arrives at Sundance just in time, thirteen years after the initial run of The Blair Witch Project. V/H/S centers around a group of petty criminals who are sent to an old man’s house to steal a single vhs tape. They are told nothing other than that they will know which tape to take when they see it. After entering the house they find hundreds of tapes and a dead man upstairs, making a quick and easy score much more complicated. Watching the tapes in search of “the one” affords the film the opportunity to show five different short films, each shot by a different director. The narrative of the short films are not connected in any way, but they do share similar themes of murder, betrayal and/or creepy supernatural circumstances. I won’t describe any of the shorts in detail because I feel it might take away from the horror that I experienced during the film. All five shorts stand out in their own way. The “slasher” sequence directed by Glenn McQuaid – featuring a jock, his nerdy friend and a cheerleader — had a slightly confusing plotline, but amazing special effects turned the otherwise simplistic short into a pretty terrifying ten minute sequence. One of the last shorts in the film centers around Emily (Helen Rogers) who communicates with her boyfriend over Skype. Emily believes her apartment is haunted, and frequently hears voices outside her door. The entire short was filmed using only the built-in laptop cameras, but Rogers fantastic performance kept me captivated enough not to be distracted by the slightly lower quality of the video. It has been too long since I have been truly scared while watching a movie, and I am not ashamed to admit that after watching V/H/S, I didn’t want to turn my lights off when I went to bed later that night. I hope that V/H/S is a turning point in the found-footage horror genre. The film is gruesome throughout, full of blood and gore to be expected of any horror film, but I never felt that the gore or violence was used just to be disgusting. V/H/S wildly exceeded my expectations, and I can’t wait for a second screening to see all that I missed while covering my eyes the first time around.

Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy is without a doubt three of my favorite movies of all-time. From the seamless and spectacular meshing of practical and CGI effects, to the breathtaking score and marvelous ensemble acting, there is really nothing I can get riled up about and criticize (except for The Return of The King’s neverending ending). You’d think with my love of the previous trilogy I’d be chomping at the bit to see Peter Jackson venture back to Middle Earth with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again, but I’m not. In fact, I’m slightly worried these two prequels, especially considering they’re being released in 3D, will do for The Lord of the Rings trilogy what the Star Wars prequels did for the original trilogy – sully and corrupt the whole franchise. Don’t get me wrong, I’m more than happy to put my trust in Peter Jackson. His filmography since The Lord of the Rings speaks for itself. King Kong and The Lovely Bones are splendid and underappreciated movies and Jackson is an adept director, but The Hobbit franchise has been a large mess of lawsuits and posturing since 2006, culminating with Guillermo del Toro, whom Jackson handpicked, leaving the project in 2010 and Jackson taking the reigns shortly thereafter. Maybe that’s for the best, but then we have this gawky preview, recently released with The Adventures of Tintin, and frankly, my first viewing of the trailer didn’t help reassure my feelings that The Hobbit isn’t going to live up to expectations. Just because you play familiar music and show our old pal Gandalf and Gollum doesn’t mean outright success. At first glance, this two-plus minute preview seems silly, muddled and too much of a wink-wink to the prior films. However, I had to remind myself this is only a teaser and, in my humble opinion, it does just that. I was also reminded that The Hobbit was written for children and, as such, the material must be digested differently than the heavy-themed, super-violent The Lord of the Rings. Am I excited for these films? Sure, but cautious, zero-expectation excitement is my temperature at this stage. I’m probably in the minority here, because Facebook erupted in hosanna shouts of hallelujah the day the preview released for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, but I have to trust my instincts and at this stage my giddiness for a return to Middle Earth is not where I expected it would be. I’ll reserve total judgment for the next trailer and for the final film on December 14, 2012, but, again, right now I’m collecting splinters on the fence and a cold wind of pessimism is blowing hard into my 3D glasses. Boo.

Wow. Just wow. Wow. Can Christopher Nolan do anything wrong? Has the guy ever made a bad movie? Let me answer: No. He’s this generation’s Steven Spielberg, even his so-so movies are unanimously loved by audiences and critics. The only sad thing is The Dark Knight Rises, if you believe Christian Bale and Nolan, is the last outing in this acclaimed and beloved Batman franchise. So while I’m beyond excited for the release of The Dark Knight Rises on July 20, 2012, it’s also a little bittersweet. By the looks of this full-length trailer, it also might be a big fat punch to the soft parts. We don’t know the full extent of the story, except some of the characters – Bane (Tom Hardy), Catwoman (Anne Hathaway) – and that it’s set eight years after the events of The Dark Knight. From the look of the trailer, Bane (the guy wearing Heath Ledger’s Brokeback Mountain jacket and a futuristic Hannibal Lecter breathing mask) is looking to lay a world of hurt on Gotham and Batman/Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale). Considering we see a smashed cowl in the poster above and a dude, possibly Bruce Wayne/Batman, limping with a cane in, what might be, Wayne Manor, this could be evidence that Nolan and company have possibly incorporated happenings from the 1993 comic, The Man Who Broke the Bat, wherein Bane learns Batman’s secret identity, ambushes him at Wayne Manor and attacks him in the Batcave, breaking his back and leaving him a paraplegic. I’m not sure the timeline of events in The Dark Knight Rises, but I’d bet Batman gets his ass kicked and then comes back for redemption. Take a close look at the trailer below and at the teaser trailer and let me know if you think I’m on the right track. Regardless of the story, I can’t imagine this movie being nothing short of pure win. The Dark Knight Rises is directed by Christopher Nolan and stars Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Gary Oldman and Marion Cotillard. It rolls into theaters on July 20, 2012.
