I’ve been giddy as a schoolgirl for this summer’s MAN OF STEEL ever since the teaser trailer debuted last summer in front of Christopher Nolan’s THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. It was bittersweet to know THE DARK KNIGHT Trilogy was finished and we’d never see Christian Bale don the cape and cowl again, but the promise of something else spectacular and tantalizing has been wonderful. I know they’re just trailers and high hopes can be easily crushed with some deceptive marketing for a crappy movie, but I find myself hard pressed to not be completely swept up by what I’ve seen so far from director Zack Snyder (300, SUCKER PUNCH). Check out the trailer below and tell me you’re not counting the days to June 14, 2013! I sure am!

GRADE: D Remember back in 2009 when audiences were abuzz about what tigers dreamed of, whether the said striped jungle cats preferred pepper over cinnamon, and exactly who was the tiny, naked violent Asian man springing from the Wolf Pack’s Mercedes? Cast your mind to 2011, when we wondered if this was a magic show, and where a chubby, bearded dude purchased his awesome golden lab t-shirt and how that and a traditional Chinese hat seem to be the perfect apparel for tracking down a lost teenager in Bangkok. I remember those movie moments from THE HANGOVER and THE HANGOVER PART II, but sadly the third and final installment of the Wolf Pack’s adventures, THE HANGOVER PART III, provides no comic memories and muddles into the sunset with a whimper. I’m disappointed, to be frank, but on that note, I should have seen this coming. THE HANGOVER PART III lives up to the trailers – unexciting, lost, and way too much Leslie Chow (Ken Jeong). And sadly, too much Alan Garner (Zach Galifianakis), as well. Why a 100 minute movie was built around two supporting and limited characters, I’ll never understand. Especially in the case of Chow. Perhaps director and writer, Todd Phillips, ran out of creative gas, because this last outing feels uninspired, like the entire crew were simply going through the motions. That might be the case, but in reality, THE HANGOVER never needed two additional parts to its tale of Las Vegas bachelor party shenanigans and debauchery. THE HANGOVER PART III opens with an introduction to the characters the movie wants to force down our throat: Leslie Chow (Jeong) escaping from a Chinese prison and Alan Garner (Galifianakis) accidently beheading a giraffe he just purchased while leisurely sipping a beer driving on a California interstate. Alan’s latest misstep is the nail in the coffin – literally, as his father (Jeffrey Tambor) has a heart attack while berating him for the mess he’s caused – and his family, along with his friends, aka The Wolf Pack, decide to stage an intervention and get Alan to commit to a rehab facility in Arizona. Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms) and Doug (Justin Bartha) hop in Phil’s minivan and take a downtrodden Alan to rehab and that’s where the attempted comic adventure begins. An old Las Vegas gangster named Marshall (John Goodman) shows up with Black Doug (Mike Epps) and tells The Wolf Pack they have three days to find Leslie Chow (who stole 21 million dollars worth of gold from Marshall) or he will kill White Doug. The rest of the movie has Stu, Phil and Alan going to Tijuana and back to Vegas and ends up becoming more of a poorly made whodunit than a raucous comedy. If THE HANGOVER PART III had a sound it would be the flat, wet, depressing last breath of a balloon deflating. What made THE HANGOVER so amazing was the randomness, the absolute absurdity, and the amazing collaborative cast – which allowed bit players like Ken Jeong’s Leslie Chow and Zach Galifianakis’ Alan Garner...

Robert Downey Jr. is, without argument, one of the finest actors working today in Hollywood. He may have fallen completely from grace for a period with on-again, off-again substance abuse issues, but his resurgence, beginning in 2005, has made him a household name. He’s not only a stellar actor, but also a surefire bankable box office star. He brings charisma, wittiness, intensity, and his trademark cheery sarcasm – delivered with absolute pinpoint precision – to every character he portrays and, as expected, he carries IRON MAN 3 with his gift. That’s not to slight the other actors in IRON MAN 3. There are other big names in the latest Tony Stark saga – Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts, Don Cheadle as War Machine, aka Iron Patriot, aka Rhodey Rhodes, Ben Kingsley as The Mandarin, and Guy Pearce as Aldrich Killian – and they are all solid, but this is a movie built around the wonderment that is Robert Downey Jr. These other folks are nothing more than faces, with the exception of Kingsley’s Mandarin, and somewhat forgettable. Nothing, as of yet, has matched the menace and tenacity of Jeff Bridges’ villain in IRON MAN back in 2008. IRON MAN 3 picks up shortly after the alien wormhole extravaganza that went down in New York City in 2012′s THE AVENGERS. This time around Jon Favreau, the director of IRON MAN and IRON MAN 2, returns only as Tony Stark’s chauffer/bodyguard, Happy Hogan. Directing duties for this third outing fall to Shane Black, who previously worked with Downey in 2005 with KISS KISS BANG BANG. Black hasn’t been behind the camera but twice, however his screenwriting credits look like an ode to 80s and early 90s action-movie nirvana, with LETHAL WEAPON and THE LAST BOY SCOUT as the standout flicks. It’s safe to say Black like’s action and likes to blow stuff up and IRON MAN 3 has loads of both. Anyone worried about the absence of Favreau can calm their nerdy heart; Black matches Favreau beat-for-beat, even with the flashy title sequences. It’s not precisely clear how much time has passed since Tony Stark/Iron Man (Downey) delivered the meant-for-Manhattan nuke into the crotchal region of the evil Chitauri somewhere in outer space in THE AVENGERS, but when the movie opens, Stark is back in California, tinkering in his hi-tech workshop and suffering through bouts of, we assume, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. For some reason, which is never fully explained, when Stark reflects on the events in New York City, he gets the heebie jeebbies and stays up late adding to his Iron Man arsenal. Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) doesn’t think this is healthy or cool, and allthewhile a brutal and enigmatic terrorist called The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) has surfaced and is laying siege to the United States both home and abroad. When Happy is wounded and sent into a coma via one of The Mandarin’s attacks, Stark challenges the terrorist to a fight and chaos ensues from that point to the films explosive – literally...

When your last two movies are the nauseating THE HAPPENING and the sack-punching THE LAST AIRBENDER, you do not, under any circumstances, use your name in the marketing material for promoting your movie. You keep it tucked away in the small print where nobody will ever know. Such is the case with M. Night Shyamalan and his new movie, AFTER EARTH, starring Will and Jaden Smith, and rightly so. After building some clout with critical and commercial successes such as THE SIXTH SENSE, UNBREAKABLE and SIGNS – Shyamalan subsequently burned his good name to the ground with the aforementioned disasters. Now he’s back – somewhat silently – to direct the Smith Family Space Adventure, which hits theaters on June 7, 2013. I have to say, while I’m extremely cautious, AFTER EARTH looks good. The story revolves around humanity abandoning the decaying planet for a new, stable home, light years away from Earth, called Nova Prime. Civilization is ressucitated and 1,000 years later, General Cypher Raige (Will Smith) and his son, Kitai (Jaden Smith), head back to Earth with a dangerous alien payload for some father/son bonding. That all goes to hell-in-a-handbasket when their ship is pulverized in an asteroid field and they are left to fend for themselves on Earth, which is now overgrown with all sorts of dangerous creepy crawlies. Check out the trailer below and let me know what you think. I’m not sold, but it’s definitely on my summer 2013 watch list.

When I was a kid, nothing – absolutely nothing – scared me more than Miss Almira Gulch, aka The Wicked Witch of the West, from the classic 1939 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer masterpiece, THE WIZARD OF OZ. Arguably the most-watched movie in history, there was something about her sinister sneer and evil cackle that gave me the willies, especially when Dorothy spies her inside the tornado, peddling outside the window of the uprooted Gale home. Despite having seen STAR WARS, JAWS, SUPERMAN and CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, there was something visually beguiling about THE WIZARD OF OZ that made it opulent, captivating and undeniably ageless. There really could never be an equal or another, and failed movies like JOURNEY BACK TO OZ (1974), THE WIZ (1978), and RETURN TO OZ (1985) were testimony to THE WIZARD OF OZ’s once-in-a-lifetime greatness. Imagine my distaste when Sam Raimi (SPIDER-MAN, SPIDER-MAN 2 and SPIDER-MAN 3) was tagged to direct the Walt Disney Pictures-produced, OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL. I had to choke down the dry-heaves seeing Raimi’s muse, James Franco (127 HOURS), in one of the worst teaser trailers in recent memory. Coupled with it’s early-March 2013 release date, OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL looked like a traveshamockery. I’m happy to say that I couldn’t have been more wrong. OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL isn’t a traveshamockery and it won’t have L. Frank Baum spinning in his grave and coming back to Tobyrize the Raimi household. It’s not even close to the landmark 1939 movie, but it’s pretty good – it’s full of magic and beauty, and is, without-a-doubt, a bright, unexpected surprise in early March as audiences and the box-office crawl wearily from the cinematic doldrums that is the month of February. OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL begins, aesthetically, like the THE WIZARD OF OZ, in the 4:3 Academy ratio and in black-and-white, only transitioning to widescreen (16:9) and color when the aforementioned Oz (James Franco), aka Oscar Zoroaster Phadrig Isaac Norman Henkel Emmannuel Ambroise Diggs, is swept away by a twister while escaping a jealous boyfriend at the traveling circus he works at as a magician. Facing imminent death, Oz shouts to the heavens to whomever is listening that he’s not ready to die, that he can be a better man. And suddenly he’s through the storm and surrounded by the lavish landscape of Oz, crash landing, conveniently near a would-be rescuer, the lovely Theodora (Mila Kunis). She’s dressed in some maroon and black get-up that looks like a cross between something from ZORRO THE GAY BLADE and PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN. After Oz introduces himself, Theodora, somewhat smitten by his charm and his prophetic arrival, is determined to get him to the Emerald City to see her sister, Evanora (Rachel Weisz), who is caretaker of the green metropolis since the city lost its ruler and has been under siege by a wicked witch. Along the way, Oz gains a companion, a talking, winged monkey wearing a bellhop uniform, named Finley (Zach Braff), and the party of three makes its way to the capitol...

If you were one of the 42 million viewers of last Sunday’s three hour and 35 minutes Oscar telecast, then aside from enduring a schizophrenic show with way too much CHICAGO, you saw the love poured out to ARGO (best picture, best adapted screenplay, best film editing), LES MISERABLES (best supporting actress, best makeup and hairstyling, best sound mixing), LINCOLN (best actor, best production design), and SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK (best actress). The best news? If you haven’t seen any of these Oscar-nominated and Oscar-winning movies, you can catch LINCOLN, LES MISERABLES and SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK at Logan North Main Megaplex theater, and you can pick up ARGO on Blu-ray or DVD online or at the store (and via Redbox on March 19th). Another Oscar-nominated movie, THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY, is still playing at the Providence Stadium Megaplex theater. All these movies are easily worth the full-priced ticket. As for movies opening this weekend, you have four to choose from – 21 AND OVER (R) When a movie boasts “from the writers of THE HANGOVER” and the trailer boasts copious amounts of booze and an Asian guy running around in a bra and underwear yelling, “Free O.J.,” you know exactly the kind of college-kids-gone-wild flick that awaits. Crude and rude with just enough heart to make it all go down with laughs and smiles. JACK THE GIANT SLAYER (PG-13) A new take on the old tale of Jack and The Beanstalk, this Bryan Singer (VALKYRIE) film has boasted multiple directors, delays, a name change (from KILLER to SLAYER) and Warner Brothers pushed the movie back from its original release date of June 2012 to March 1, 2013. I hate to play the skeptic, but Singer hasn’t given us much to cheer about recently and a movie with as much production trouble as CGI beanstalk-chucking giants makes me leery. PHANTOM (R) This Soviet submarine thriller set during the Cold War and the K-129 crisis of 1968 is an under-the-radar movie that proves Ed Harris (GAME CHANGE) and David Duchovney (GOATS) are alive and kicking and you don’t need to have HBO or Showtime to see these thespians strut their stuff. THE LAST EXORCISM PART II (PG-13) So apparently the last exorcism of THE LAST EXORCISM really wasn’t the last exorcism. Apparently when the found-footage movie caused screams and hands-over-eyes action in theaters, the studio decided to milk the scares in a sequel. This one isn’t in the found-footage style, but still looks to provide an up close look at Satan’s brand of back-bending devilish yoga. If you’re not up for any new releases, you can still catch last week’s openers – DARK SKIES (PG-13) and SNITCH (PG-13) – in theaters, or you can hit up your local DVD rental spot or store for THE MASTER, an Oscar-nominated movie that, despite amazing acting, will make your head hurt. Or, if you’re into the whole sparkly vampire business, i.e. a love-struck teenager or creepy mom, THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN PART 2 is available tonight at midnight!...

SAFE HAVEN, the new movie from the King of Schmaltz, Nicholas Sparks, is assuredly going to get dumped on by the majority of movie critics (it’s holding at 12% fresh as of this writing, about five percent lower than its Valentine’s Day rival, A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD), but honestly, I’m not sure why. It’s not Oscar contender by any means, but it’s not trying to be anything more or less than a easy-to-swallow, pretty-to-look at movie chock full of pretty people, butterflies-and-goosebumps romance and enough gasps and thrills in the whodunit department to give it a slight edge over whatever the Lifetime television channel is airing these days. I understand tastes vary for every moviegoer, but sometimes I think my fellow film critics go out of their way to be haters. Don’t agree? Then why does SAFE HAVEN have a 12% fresh rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.com and a 70 percent fresh rating from the audience, the normal folks who actually pay to see movies? If being a film critic means being a prickly curmudgeon, then count me out. I’ll be a film connoisseur instead, or a movie aficionado. I don’t like everything I see, but rarely am I not entertained on some level; rarely am I ever completely disappointed when I leave the theater. And SAFE HAVEN isn’t a disappointment, that’s for certain. SAFE HAVEN refers to the tiny beachside hamlet Erin Tierney (Julianne Hough) flees to after skipping town in the middle of the night from her abusive husband whom, it appears, she left bleeding in the dining room of her Boston home. It also refers to the hunky, tan arms of one Alex Wheatley (Josh Duhamel), a recently widowed father-of-two and local convenience store owner. Erin, who now goes by the name Katie, and Alex’s paths as star-crossed lovers are assured after awkward run-ins involving yellow paint for Erin’s kitchen floor and Alex’s late-night delivery of a bike to save Erin her long walk into Southport each day for her job at Ivan’s, a local eatery. Things are going well for Erin/Katie, who has also befriended her neighbor, Jo (Cobie Smulders), and whose relationship with Alex and his kids, Josh (Noah Lomax) and Lexi (Mimi Kirkland), is blossoming with each passing moment. This is her new life and home and she is happy. I didn’t read SAFE HAVEN. In fact, I haven’t read any of Nicholas Sparks’ books. Fans of the book will know the surprises the minute the screen comes to live and they start tossing popcorn into their mouths, but I’m not going to be a spoiler and give them away in this review. Suffice it to say, there are a few surprises that I didn’t see coming. Maybe I’m an idiot or was too caught up in the dreamy, slow-paced beachside life Erin/Katie had found, but in the end, it’s a movie and a romantic drama, so someone is going to get hurt and the past, when left unresolved, always finds a way back to haunt the...

I watched, for the first time, Sam Raimi’s 1981 cult classic horror movie, THE EVIL DEAD, on Netflix last month and I wasn’t impressed. I don’t know what all the fuss is about. It’s silly and unspectacular. Fans can clamor about it’s low-budget and doing more with less, but I’m not buying it. Crappy acting and directing is the same whether someone spends $350,000 or $250 million. Frankly, I’m not surprised. With the exception of SPIDER-MAN and SPIDER-MAN 2 (and maybe A SIMPLE PLAN), show me a Sam Raimi movie that’s solid gold. You can’t. There isn’t one. We’ll see what he crafts with OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL this March, but my expectations are extremely low. I just don’t think he’s that good. What’s my point? 32 years later and a remake is coming to theaters on April 12, 2013, directed by Fede Alvarez, and based on the trailer it looks creepier, bloodier and definitely scarier than the comedy that is the 1981 version of THE EVIL DEAD. Sam Raimi serves as producer of this remake (as does Raimi muse, Bruce Campbell), so maybe this is the vision and version he would have made, could have made, if only he had $15 million and today’s special FX to lean on back in the early 1980s. Do I want to see this? Not really. What about YOU? Are you a fan of the 1981 version? Check out the redband trailer below.

Not to be Debbie Downer, but there is no way in hell a Halo movie will ever be made. If by some miracle the new Halo trilogy – starting with the release of Halo 4 this November – overpowers the Call of Duty behemoth and the Master Chief saga finds its mojo once more, then maybe, just maybe, we might see a Halo movie in the future. But I doubt it. Microsoft and Hollywood had it’s chance when the Halo universe hit its peak in the 2007-2009 window, but that fire has dimmed, as has the game. I understand the last two games – Halo: ODST and Halo: Reach – haven’t had the Chief, but I promise you they are doing blood sacrifices to the Gods at 343 Industries, praying that Black Ops II doesn’t scream in and bludgeon their hopes and dreams into a nooby, laggy, tired pulp. My point? This Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn (two episodes thus far; new episodes every Friday) web series isn’t half bad. It’s definitely better than anything the Syfy Channel belches out. It’s like a poor man’s Battlestar Galactica, and I’m talking the Edward James Olmos Battlestar Galactica, not the Would-You-Like-To-By-Some-Alpo Lorne Greene disco version. It even has some familiar faces. Well, one, and that’s if you’ve had a Chronicles of Narnia movie marathon lately. Yay for Anna Popplewell! Oh, and Master Chief, yeah, he’s played by Daniel Cudmore and Cudmore is one of the nasty Volturi in the latest and forthcoming Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn movies. Way to expand your audience 343 Industries! Episodes one and two of Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn are below for your enjoyment. Savor it, because this is all the Halo movie you’re ever going to get. Sad but true. PART ONE PART TWO

Zero Dark Thirty, in a word, looks awesome. The Hurt Locker, Kathryn Bigelow’s last movie, was, in my opinion, a perfect film. This follow-up, a slice of cinematic heaven detailing the decade-long hunt for Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind 9/11, is assuredly as good, if not better. I’m saying that right now, having only seen the trailer. I trust Bigelow like I trust Christopher Nolan. Like I trust Pixar. Like I don’t trust George Lucas. This movie is going to be on the best picture/best director list for sure. Mark. My. Words. Zero Dark Thirty hits theaters on December 19, 2012, and stars Jessica Chastain (The Help), Joel Edgerton (Warrior), Chris Pratt (The Five-Year Engagement), James Gandolfini (Killing Them Softly), Mark Strong (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), and Edgar Ramírez (Wrath of the Titans). It was written by Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker) and, as noted earlier, is directed by Kathryn Bigelow. What do YOU think of the trailer? I smell Oscar and awesome.

If you’ve seen any of Quentin Tarantino’s movies – Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Kill Bill (Vol 1 &2) and Inglorious Basterds – then you know when you plant your butt in front of the big screen, you’re in for a methodical celebration of cinema and creativity, punctuated by crisp storytelling and marvelous dialogue. Tarantino is a master, easily one of the greatest working directors today (and probably one of the greatest of all-time), and after tackling the genres of crime, Kung-Fu and war, he now moves to the Western (and probably a Spaghetti Western at that). Based on the second trailer for Django Unchained, I’d say he’s got another looming round of Oscar nominations to celebrate. The cast is stacked, as always, and it’s easy, based off the trailer, to think Jamie Foxx (Horrible Bosses), Christoph Waltz (Carnage) and Leonardo DiCaprio (J.Edgar) could all see their names up for consideration in the best acting categories. Check out the second trailer for Django Unchained below and let me know your thoughts? What’s your favorite Tarantino film?

I’m not saying The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is going to suck. I’m not. It’s impossible for me not to put my faith in Peter Jackson, who, arguably, has never made a terrible movie. From The Lord of The Rings Trilogy to King Kong to The Lovely Bones, Jackson’s resume is stellar. I trust him completely. With that out of the way, is it just me or does this poster seem really Disney-ish and Muppety? I’m all for humor, but between this poster and the trailer’s goofy dinner dancing scene at Casa de Bilbo, I’m at a loss as to what I’m getting with this first of three installments of The Hobbit. And yes, while I trust Peter Jackson, I just can’t escape the feeling we’re being served some Jar Jar Binks. I just pray Jackson’s “prequels” don’t go the way of He Who Shall Not Be Named But Wears Flannel and Isn’t Voldemort. What do you think?

I love Bradley Cooper (The Words) and Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games), but what sold me on this movie (aside from the sweet trailer music by The Lumineers “Ho Hey”), was this line from Bradley Cooper’s character, Pat Solitano, “This is what I believe to be true: You have to do everything you can, and if you stay positive you have a shot at a silver lining.” How awesome is that statment? Isn’t that what everyone hopes and dreams about? We all make mistakes, we all go down roads and paths we aren’t fond of later and we all hope for something better – a silver lining if you will. It doesn’t mean we don’t love today (that’s the staying positive part), it just means we believe in our dreams and have confidence they’ll be made real. But I digress. This movie, Silver Linings Playbook, looks stellar. It’s got a top-notch cast: Robert De Niro, Jacki Weaver, Julie Stiles and even our long, lost Rush Hour friend, Chris Tucker. It’s also directed by David O. Russell, the helmsman behind 2010′s The Fighter, so you know Silver Linings Playbook will be in the Academy Award crosshairs. Silver Linings Playbook hits cinemas on November 21, 2012. Check out the trailer below and let me know what you think.
