It might not be Twilight or Harry Potter, but you have been living under a rock if you haven’t heard of The Hunger Games. With Team Jacob and Team Edward on the backburner while The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn simmers in Hollywood’s slow-cooker until November 2011, the movie version of Susan Collins’ popular young adult novels is gaining steam. It’s not recent news, but with some Hunger Games posts coming this week, why not kick it off with the most recent of rumors: who from Tinsletown’s talent pool will direct Team Peeta and Team Gale?
Answer: While only in negotiations, the frontrunner for The Hunger Games gig seems to be Gary Ross (Seabiscuit, Pleasantville). Also rumored to be on the short list was Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Away We Go, Road to Perdition) and David Slade (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse). Mendes dropped out voluntarily with news the James Bond franchise, of which he was set to direct the next film, is coming back to life, and Slade I don’t think was ever a real possibility, so it seems the movie is Ross’ for the taking.
Is it a good choice? Seabiscuit and Pleasantville are fine movies, and Ross was the writer behind Dave and Big, but I don’t think who directs the movie will be as important as who they get to play Katniss, Gale, Peeta, Haymitch, Cinna and the other memorable faces from Collins’ blockbusters.
One thing Ross definitely has going in his favor is some peppery facial hair that would make the rulers of Planet Beardatron jump for joy.
