Wow. Just wow. Wow. Can Christopher Nolan do anything wrong? Has the guy ever made a bad movie? Let me answer: No. He’s this generation’s Steven Spielberg, even his so-so movies are unanimously loved by audiences and critics. The only sad thing is The Dark Knight Rises, if you believe Christian Bale and Nolan, is the last outing in this acclaimed and beloved Batman franchise. So while I’m beyond excited for the release of The Dark Knight Rises on July 20, 2012, it’s also a little bittersweet. By the looks of this full-length trailer, it also might be a big fat punch to the soft parts. We don’t know the full extent of the story, except some of the characters – Bane (Tom Hardy), Catwoman (Anne Hathaway) – and that it’s set eight years after the events of The Dark Knight. From the look of the trailer, Bane (the guy wearing Heath Ledger’s Brokeback Mountain jacket and a futuristic Hannibal Lecter breathing mask) is looking to lay a world of hurt on Gotham and Batman/Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale). Considering we see a smashed cowl in the poster above and a dude, possibly Bruce Wayne/Batman, limping with a cane in, what might be, Wayne Manor, this could be evidence that Nolan and company have possibly incorporated happenings from the 1993 comic, The Man Who Broke the Bat, wherein Bane learns Batman’s secret identity, ambushes him at Wayne Manor and attacks him in the Batcave, breaking his back and leaving him a paraplegic. I’m not sure the timeline of events in The Dark Knight Rises, but I’d bet Batman gets his ass kicked and then comes back for redemption. Take a close look at the trailer below and at the teaser trailer and let me know if you think I’m on the right track. Regardless of the story, I can’t imagine this movie being nothing short of pure win. The Dark Knight Rises is directed by Christopher Nolan and stars Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Gary Oldman and Marion Cotillard. It rolls into theaters on July 20, 2012.

Judas H. Priest! I cannot believe I sat through a second showing of Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 just to catch a big screen glimpse of the much-anticipated, long-awaited teaser trailer for The Dark Knight Rises, due in theaters July 20, 2012. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed The Deathly Hallows – Part 2, but I’m no Hogwarts zealot. Once is enough for me. Still, Christopher Nolan’s musk of perfection led me to the theater and I did catch the preview, which clocks in at a little over a minute. Teaser doesn’t even do it justice. If The Dark Knight Rises was a stripper, I got a glimpse of ankle and that’s about it. And from what I’ve seen thus far, I’m torn. Part of me was buoyed and intrigued, the other half was juggling ho-hums and sighs. So what do we gather from the teaser? Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) is in the hospital talking raspy to, we assume, Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale), and sort of simultaneously complaining that Batman went on hiatus and imploring the Caped Crusader to join the fight again. Other than the graphic from the teaser poster, there is no knew footage in the first portion of the teaser, just shots from the other two films and Ra’s al Ghul’s (Liam Neeson) speech about becoming a legend from Batman Begins. I think what I hate most about the teaser and what made me sour was the standard “Every Hero Has a Journey…Every Journey Has an End” text. Did we really need that bit of type? That was the best Nolan and Co. could manage for this first glimpse at the final Batman movie? I don’t like it. It seems easy and cheap. Still, even with that minor complaint, the preview is a teaser and it does just that. We are left to wonder where Batman has gone, what has cropped up since he’s been out of the crimefighting picture, and we’re given a couple quick flashes of Bane (Tom Hardy) to whet our villainous appetite. We’re still left to wonder how Selina Kyle/Catwoman (Anne Hathaway) fits into the picture, as well as how significant the roles of Marion Cotillard (Inception), Juno Temple (Year One) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception) will be in The Dark Knight Rises. Alas, we’ll most likely have to wait until the full trailer is released, and, based on Nolan’s past timelines, I wouldn’t expect that to hit the theaters and the web until this December at the earliest. At any rate, that’s my two-cents. What say ye? Do you like the teaser, or were you disappointed like me?

The big buzz on the web this week, after a few fan-made trailers hit YouTube this past month, is whether or not a teaser trailer for The Dark Knight Rises would be attached to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2. I was at a press screening for the final Potter film last Monday, July 11, and Batman was no where to be found. However, I’m heading out to see Potter and Co. tomorrow for the sole purpose of catching a small glimpse of The Dark Knight Rises, easily the most anticipated movie of 2012. According to Screen Rant, the trailer is attached to The Deathly Hallows – Part 2, so if any AATM readers have seen the trailer, give us your thoughts. Did you wet yourself with excitement and anticipation? I know I sure as crap will. At any rate, check out the teaser poster for The Dark Knight Rises (click on the thumbnail for a super-sized version). Me likey. It’s bold and on first glance has an Inception feel to it. All I know is Christopher Nolan can do no wrong in my book. He is the Pixar of directors right now and I cannot wait for The Dark Knight Rises, especially considering my unabashed love for The Dark Knight and Batman Begins. Easily the best superhero movies ever made. Period.

I don’t know if it’s my advanced age or some desensitization to “chick flicks,” but I’m thinking One Day, a new romantic drama starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess, looks promising. In fact, I probably should repent straightway for mentioning “chick flick” in the same breath as this movie, especially since it’s directed by Lone Scherfig, the brilliant woman behind 2009′s An Education. I guess this is my easy way of admitting that I enjoy a good romance, but I prefer stories that tap into real life, rather than the ridiculously goofy stuff that one would find on Kate Hudson (Something Borrowed) and Matthew McConaughey (Ghosts of Girlfriends Past) resumes. Real life is full of love and possibility and happy endings. You just have to believe. One Day is based on the novel of the same name, written by David Nicholls (who also wrote the screenplay for the movie), and follows two friends, Emma (Anne Hathaway) and Dexter (Jim Sturgess), over the course of 20 years after their graduation from the University of Edinburgh on July 15, 1988. The pair slept together on the night of their graduation but never became romantically involved, instead remaining friends. The novel, each chapter in fact, returns to each subsequent July 15 for, as stated before, 20 years. The novel charts the various directions Emma and Dexter’s lives take, including their various romances, but the one constant is each other and, I assume, the romance, or even sadness, comes in the question – will they or won’t they acquiesce to fate and admit and accept their love for each other. Check out the trailer below and let me know your thoughts. I’m not sure I’ll run right out and catch this in the multiplex, but it’s definitely on my list of movies to see in 2011. It hits theater on August 19, 2011, which leads me to believe it’s being dangled in the early stages of the award’s season.

I hope Andy will forgive me for hijacking his website (he probably forgot I had a username and password) to share this news that makes me very giddy in my nether regions: Warner Bros. officially announced today the addition of two more Inception alumni to the cast of The Dark Knight Rises. Marion Cotillard will join the cast as Wayne Industries board member and Bruce Wayne gal-pal Miranda Tate, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt will portray John Blake, a Gotham City cop given a special assignment by Gary Oldman’s Commissioner Gordon. Of course, Cotillard and Gordon-Levitt are not the first Inception stars brought to TDKR by Director Christopher Nolan; Tom Hardy already had been cast as the villain of the film, Bane. His role in the film was announced in January along with news that Anne Hathaway would join the cast as Selina Kyle. I’m of the opinion that this can only be good for the final part of The Dark Knight trilogy, and Christopher Nolan should have carte blanc from all fans of cinema to do whatever he wants, as he is arguable the best director in Hollywood today. Now as I go and read more Dark Knight fan fiction, I will hope Andy doesn’t punish me for making a cameo.

When a superhero movie grosses more than a billion dollars worldwide and is critically acclaimed (94% on Rotten Tomatoes.com), people, not only fanboys, wait with somewhat baited breath to see what the filmmakers have in store for the next installment. Such is the case with Christopher Nolan’s Batman saga, with the aforementioned 2008 mega-hit, The Dark Knight, and its predecessor, Batman Begins, arguably setting the bar for what superhero movies should deliver. I’m still bitter The Dark Knight wasn’t given more Oscar love. Maybe Nolan will get a repentance Oscar this year for Inception. At any rate, imagine my excitement and the buzz on the web today when it was announced the lovely and stunning Anne Hathaway would be portraying Selina Kyle, a.k.a Catwoman, in Nolan’s presumably final caped crusader movie, The Dark Knight Rises. Many a fanboy across the web enjoyed a rise at this news and probably all flocked to Mr. Skin.com to ogle Hathaway’s plethora of nude scenes, most recently in Love & Other Drugs. In related news, Tom Hardy, who shined for Nolan in Inception and was the first new casting in The Dark Knight Rises, will be playing Bane, who some probably – and sadly – remember as a gianormous, roided-out luchador in the craptastic Batman & Robin. Some will undoubtedly hate this move by Nolan and Co. Me? I have no issue with the characters of Catwoman or Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, nor do I have any problem whatsoever with the casting of Hathaway and Hardy. Both have proven to be adept actors and seem to be multi-faceted in their thespian abilities. But even more so, Nolan, both in screenwriting and directing the Batman franchise, has proven to be a virtuoso at creating depth, emotion and passion in a genre usually filled with quips, explosions and tights. At this point, I’m more than willing to put my trust in Nolan and I have no doubt The Dark Knight Rises will meet or exceed my expectations come the summer of 2012.

I am an unabashed hater of Jake Gyllenhaal. Maybe it’s his good looks and winning personality, but I don’t think he’s the Hollywood star and first-class actor the media often portrays him as. I liked him in October Sky, before his pubes sprouted and his voice changed, and I thought he did a decent job in David Fincher’s Zodiac. But that’s about it. He was overrated in Brokeback Mountain and I thought he was stunningly ridiculous in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Aside from my Very Hairy Jake Gyllenhaal hatred, I still want to see him and Anne Hathaway (Valentine’s Day) get steamy and romantic in Edward Zwick’s new dramaedy, Love and Other Drugs. Frankly, this movie could start the Jonas Brothers and Fran Drescher and I’d still be frothing to see Zwick’s movie. The man has an awesome resume, including Blood Diamond, The Last Samurai and Glory. Love and Other Drugs is about a philandering Viagra salesman (Gyllenhaal) who develops a relatonship with a sexually aggressive artist (Hathaway), whereupon hilarity and drama ensue, or so we’re led to believe. I’ve read early reviews that describe Gyllenhaal and Hathaway’s performances as “career changing,” but I also have read The Social Network is the best movie on the planet and that is simply not true, at least to this movie lover. One thing is certain, the redband trailer below gives some insight into Anne Hathaway’s newfound adversion to onscreen nudity. She took off her clothes in Brokeback Mountain and Havoc, but it seems the secenes with Gyllenhaal were beyond painstaking and stressful for the young actress, because she has vowed to not strip down again. Check out the trailer after the jump and give me your thoughts.

With no less than 20 billable stars and eight story lines, the humdrum Valentine’s Day is a marshmallow-fisted counter-attack against the cynical idea that “Love’s Day” is a corporate foisted, marketing driven excuse to steal money and inspire loveless singles feel bad about themselves. It’s a “one day where love conquers all and everyone gets their Valentine wish” movie. Or at least, that’s what the overly forced scripts tries to clobber home. Instead, Valentine’s Day offers a valentine box that’s not stuffed with homemade, handwritten tokens of affection, but their store-bought, shallow and emotionally truncated equivalent. So here’s a moment of uncomfortable truth: I wanted to see this movie. Buoyed by the prospect of cozying up to a cloying, feel-good American companion to Love, Actually, Valentine’s Day felt like a chance to take in a round of filmic comfort food. But at the end of its two hours, even my Lady-Friend, who attended the screening with me, was disenfranchised. “It was OK” isn’t a blushing, melting endorsement from a core audience member. As fun as watching 2/3 of People Magazine‘s “World’s Most Beautiful People” should be, Valentine’s Day dilutes the experience in a tangle of plot thread overkill. Girl meets boy, but boy is married and only her best friend knows. Phone sex girl is in a new relationship but can’t bring herself to tell her new guy about her profession. Girl plans to give up her virginity– shenanigans ensue. News Reporter is assigned to cover Valentine’s day and discovers its true meaning… and more! In short, little kids crush, teens gush, working girls mope, Gen Xers waffle and old timers dance in the park. As balance, all these mini-tales haphazardly weave through the lives of “I’ve found the one!” school teacher Julia (Jennifer Garner) and “I lost the one!” floral business owner Reed (Ashton Kutcher). If you do the math, Valentine’s Day‘s two hour ho-hummery gives–at most– 15 minutes of screen interaction per plot thread. When most films go the 90-120 minute distance to cover one romance alone, 10-15 minute vignettes (intercut with 8 more vignettes) just doesn’t give time to connect. Flatly directed by the affable Garry Marshall (Pretty Woman, Runaway Bride), Valentine’s Day is a movie that’s numerically engineered– a Warner Brothers/Valentines Day Marketers of America play at nailing down Valentine’s weekend with a can’t-miss date movie. And while that’s not a recipe for failure, a cadre of stars who dully interact in a story that’s all about matters of the heart shouldn’t be so manipulatively fabricated that it never finds one of its own.
