I wasn’t so sure about Horrible Bosses, but after this last red band trailer (the movie hits theaters next Friday, July 8), I have to say I think this might vie with Bridesmaids for the top comedy of the summer. We all know, aside from a few funny lines and scenes, that The Hangover: Part 2 was a pretty solid disappointment, so the question is can another buddy comedy, this one about three dudes trying to whack their bosses, fare well at the box office and with critics? If all the jokes haven’t been revealed in the trailers and audiences aren’t on Jason Bateman overload, then the answer is yes. Otherwise, it might be, like so many other movies this summer, one and done for Horrible Bosses. Take a peek at the red band trailer below and let me know what you think. My highlights? Jaime Foxx, Jennifer Aniston (“Just relax there, Jodi Foster!”) and Colin Farrell all playing out of their element. And now excuse me while I go cross my fingers.

One of my favorite movies from the 1980s is the horror/comedy, Fright Night. It was released in theaters on August 2, 1985 and starred Chris Sarandon, i.e. Prince Humperdinck from The Princess Bride, William Ragsdale (who can be seen as Gary in the FX series Justified) and Roddy McDowall (best known for his role in the Planet of the Apes movies in the late 1960s an early 1970s). The movie was about a teenage boy who discovers the suave, single guy living next door is a vampire. Since Hollywood is resurrecting everything 80s these days, it’s no surprise a remake was announced and is due in theaters on August 19, 2011. Same basic plot, but now the movie stars Anton Yelchin (Star Trek), Colin Farrell (Crazy Heart), Toni Collette (The United States of Tara), Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Kick-Ass), David Tennant (Doctor Who) and Imogen Poots (Jane Eyre). Check out the trailer below and let me know your thoughts? Have you seen the 1985 version?

Despite popular belief, I don’t review movies for a living. I’m not sure anyone outside of Los Angeles, Chicago and New York could, even with a full time critic position, could claim they were actually making a “living,” either. So, like the rest of America, I slog through a 40 hour work week with an eye to the horizon and the future, hoping the smell of money and tanning oil will someday replace the chaffing of suit pants, the putrid corporate bathrooms and the numbing tan I receive eight hours a day from florescent bulbs buzzing overhead. I point this out because I watched the trailer for Horrible Bosses today and couldn’t help but smirk at the notion that it’s not just me suffering from the day-to-day grind. And isn’t that the best kind of comedy? The kind that mirrors real life? That wasn’t rhetorical. The answer is yes, it is the best. Although, I will point out – and no offense to my boss – but I would trade him for Jennifer Aniston in a heartbeat. She can sexually harass me all day long for all I care. Now that’s a job! Horrible Bosses stars Jason Bateman (who will also star opposite Ryan Reynolds in The Change-Up later this summer), Charlie Day (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), Jason Sudeikis (Hall Pass), Jennifer Aniston (Just Go with It), Colin Farrell (Crazy Heart), Kevin Spacey (Casino Jack) and Jamie Foxx (Due Date). It arrives in theaters on July 8, 2011. Take a peek at the trailer below. Yay or nay?

I stumbled upon the trailer for Peter Weir’s (Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, The Truman Show, Dead Poets Society) new epic escape/adventure film by accident, but after watching the preview, looking at the cast list and reading about the story, it is definitely on my must-see list for 2011 (it opens in limited release, probably holding out hope for Oscar season, on December 29, 2010, and wide release on January 21, 2011). The Way Back stars Jim Sturgess (Across the Universe), Colin Farrell (Crazy Heart), Ed Harris (Appaloosa), Saoirse Ronan (The Lovely Bones) and Mark Strong (Robin Hood). The story is based on a memoir written by Slawomir Rawicz, a Polish soldier who claimed to have been imprisoned and escaped, with six compatriots, from a Siberian gulag in 1941. He claimed that he and his companions trekked across the Gobi Desert, Tibet and the Himalayas, finally making it to British-occupied India in 1942. There have been many questions about the authenticity and legitimacy of Rawicz’s story, but the book, written by Ronald Downing, is immensely popular and has sold half a million copies worldwide. Check out the trailer after the jump and let me know if I’m smoking crack on thinking this movie looks fantastic.

This post has less to do with some actress whose last name is another word for farting and more about the remake of Fright Night, a beloved movie of my 1980s teenagehood. In case you missed it, DreamWorks is overseeing the Fright Night remake (due in theaters October 2011) and has already cast Colin Farrell (Crazy Heart), Anton Yelchin (Star Trek), Toni Collette (The United States of Tara), Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Kick Ass) David Tennant (Doctor Who) and, of course, Imogen Poots (28 Weeks Later), whose flatulent last name bears no resemblance to her wispy and waifish beauty. Poots will likely play Yelchin’s girlfriend and word is the remake will hold true to the 1985 original. My question is this: Do you think Fright Night deserves a remake and, if so, what do you think of the cast assembled thus far? Also, check out the trailer from the original Fright Night. My favorite line? “If you love being scared, this could be the night of your life!” Sounds like some film critics I know.

Some of cinemas most satisfying experiences can be found in small, quiet movies. The kind that don’t bowl you over with strength of their story, but rather the subtle unwrapping of their soul. Films whose strengths expand on the accessibility of its characters thanks in large part to actors who lose themselves in their roles. Crazy Heart is one of those films and Jeff Bridges is one of those actors. If you’ve seen the trailer for Crazy Heart, you’ve sampled its flavor. Crazy Heart wears its emotions on its sleeve, gently allowing the audience into a simple country song captured on film: a story about a washed-up drunk, love and aching redemption. Crazy Heart‘s emotionally resounding strength lies in its ability to avoid the kind of heavy-handed drama easily injected into a film about real-life blues, real-life mistakes and the man who succumbs to them. At times, Crazy Heart‘s events hint perilously close to cliche, but director and writer Scott Cooper, propelled almost single-handedly by Jeff Bridges, delivers an emotionally rich character arc that kindly averts the easy ledge and keeps things both authentically grounded and achingly real. Set in the world of “true” country music– not its highly polished, pop star crossover cousin– Bad Blake (Jeff Bridges), is a wasting man. He’s never without a drink or a cigarette and sucks them down without regard. Bad (as he likes to be called) is a hard-drinking, hard-living singer/songwriter who’s resigned himself to a life of bottom shelf venues and the kind of star power that’s dimly reflected off a shining day decades past. Driving himself from one dive to the next in his weathered ’78 Suburban, Bad Blake is kind-hearted and generous to his fans, but hardly so with himself– drinking and puking his way to certain oblivion until an act of fan service leads him to a savior in Jean Craddock (Oscar-nominated Maggie Gyllenhall) and her young son. In spite of his self-imposed isolation, abuse and despair, Bad Blake is the beneficiary of an incredible network of love and support that surrounds him on all sides. Through the murk of his self-destruction, Bad Blake offhandedly rejects and resents the life lines repeatedly offered by his apprentice-turned super star Tommy Sweet (Colin Farrel), a slick-talking manager and old friend Wayne (the always delightfully earthy Robert Duvall). Both a refreshing and tender achievement, everyone in Bad Blake’s life has his best interests in mind and all work, in one way or another, to deliver it. In Bad’s world, the only villain is his alcoholism. Jeff Bridges, as always, is an indulgent watch as he walks Bad Blake’s highs and lows with tender, kind eyes and rough, weathered features. It’s a role that seems tailor made for Bridges if only because he embraces it so fully. Bridges is so earnest in Bad’s defeatism and so hopeful and warm in its alleviation, when he sheepishly utters the would-be embarrassing line, “I want to talk about how bad you make this room look” it...

Jeff Bridges is one of my favorite actors, so reading he’s receiving Oscar buzz for his portrayal of an alcoholic country singer in Crazy Heart comes as no surprise. Whether he’s resurrecting a deer in Starman, drinking a White Russian in The Big Lebowski, or chucking Robert Downey Jr. into a bus in Iron Man, the guy is 100 percent solid. Add to the cast the equally dependable Maggie Gyllenhaal (The Dark Knight) and Robert Duvall (We Own the Night), as well as the underrated Colin Farrell (In Bruges), and I think you indeed have a movie with some awards potential. Check out the trailer below and share your thoughts. Like many other movies generating Oscar buzz, Crazy Heart is only available in limited release on December 16. I think it looks fantastic. What say ye?
