Normally this time of year I’d say the doldrums of Fall cinema are upon us and then bide my time until the heavyweights appear in November and December, but since the summer was so uneventful and uninspiring (save a handful of movies), I’m actually excited to move on and start screening some of the possible Oscar nominees, namely The American, Lovely, Still, The Town, Let Me In and The Social Network, to name a few. One movie hitting theaters this weekend, that won’t be an Oscar contender, but could possibly scare the prune sauce from your prunehole, is The Last Exorcism. Directed by German independent filmmaker, Daniel Stramm and produced by Generation X’s godfather of gore, Eli Roth, The Last Exorcism is, in a the simplest terms, the Paranormal Activity/Blair Witch Project of exorcism movies, meaning the story is told with the idea the footage has been “found.” You can watch the trailer for The Last Exorcism by following this link, but check out the embedded video after the jump – it’s from a viral marketing campaign for the movie where the dregs of society, hoping to catch a glimpse of boobies on the web, find their sphincters shrunk when a titillating girl fails to show her hoots and instead rolls her eyes back and goes full demon.

I feel guilty perpetuating nefariously obtained, poor quality trailers (that will likely be yanked in the coming hours), but I’m also convinced the world needs more mainstream “fish-that-eat-people-movies”. So the decision to post the trailer for Piranha 3D was kind of foregone. Way back, Andy threw up some pics and an interview from the upcoming Alexandre Aja-directed (The Hills Have Eyes, Mirrors, Haute Tension) cheese-fest. The movie was slated for an April 2010 release but recent rumor mongering says that since the Weinsteins took a financial toilet bath with Rob Marshall’s musical dud Nine, Piranha 3D may not have the cash it needs and is being pushed back to August… or never.Of course, there’s two sides to your story, internet nerds! The other has Aja doing damage control. He cheerfully says the delay is to refine the 3D and make it even “radder” (read: more bouncing boobies in your FACE) and August is a better fit anyway. The real story? It’s probably a mix of both both. The Weinstein Company (the film’s studio/distributor) is certainly hurting after Nine‘s non-arrival, but late summer is definitely more amenable to a silly flick like this and right now, Piranha 3D would crap the bed if it went head to head against the steam-building Kick-Ass (as it was originally scheduled to do). But who cares about that noise– it’s schlock Tuesday here at AATM. And while this trailer has no eyebrow raising silicone, it does have a bunch of “I’m too pretty to die” dimwits (including my fave Eli Roth) getting the what-for at Lake “Nom-Nom-Nom”. The trailer is bootlegged so the quality is spotty (and Trailer Spy’s penchant for squeezing widescreen aspect ratios to fit 4:3 blows), but enough of it’s in-focus to reveal Piranha 3D‘s going to be a bloody corpse or two above direct-to-dvd. Sweeeeet!

On Friday’s AATM show on KVNU, we received a call asking about the insanely anticipated Quentin Tarantino film that will have non-cussers in a real pickle when trying to name the title. No, it’s not Inglorious Bast…ages. It’s Inglorious Basterds (that’s not a misspell). Eli Roth, man about town and gore/torture porn purveyor extraordinaire (Cabin Fever, Hostel, Hostel 2) has been speaking mightily about the film in recent weeks. He has a starring role, as a Jewish GI who loves baseball and uses Nazi cranium to practice his swing. Earlier, MTV had quoted the self-assured Mr. Roth as stating: This movie has the intensity of ‘Reservoir Dogs,’ the style of ‘Pulp Fiction,’ the violence of ‘Kill Bill,’ the adrenaline of ‘Death Proof’ and the characters of ‘Jackie Brown.’ It’s really the greatest of Quentin’s talents, all culminating in this film. That’s cool… but take it as you will- it’s Eli Roth, who not only stars in Basterds, but also shot a mini Nazi propaganda film for the movie, The Nation’s Pride, which will be featured prominently in the final cut. Roth spoke again, which I wish he didn’t: “…In 2 days we did like 130 shots and Quentin was so happy he gave me a third day… I was thinking ‘God, I didn’t think I could be more offensive after ‘Hostel 2,’ but how can I upset people more than that?’ …I was going, ‘More swastikas! More swastikas!’… the Germans were screaming ‘Heil Hitler!’ and ‘Kill the Jews!’ and it was terrifying… We watched it over and over… but there was still something very powerful about that. I looked at Quentin and said, ‘What have I done?’… I’m going to, like, resurrect the Nazi party. They are going to make me their Sarah Palin. They will be like, ‘We love his movie. But he’s a Jew! But it’s such a good movie. But a Jew made it! It’s going to really throw off all the neo-Nazi’s. I can’t wait.” This quote singlehandedly put its own baseball bat to the head of my already weak desire to see this film. I know I’m in the suspiciously eyed minority thanks to my lack of Basterds anticipation, but the to-date emphasis on all the gleeful and brutal killing with which Basterds is being sold doesn’t sit well with me, be it Nazi punishment or not. I may have a change of heart as more details emerge before its release in August, but from everything I’ve seen and heard– and despite Basterds reinvention as an over-the-top topping of 1978′s Inglorious Bastards– the intention feels wrong, as if Basterds is wrapping itself in the justification of the Holocaust as a cheap excuse to exact the same debasement in proxy. Killing scores of Nazis may be intended as feel-good violence, but I’m not sure violence for the sake of violence should ever feel good– particularly when used for cavalier laughs and “Hey man, check THIS out” entertainment and weighted against the incredibly real suffering and sacrifice...
