Wow. Just wow. Wow. Can Christopher Nolan do anything wrong? Has the guy ever made a bad movie? Let me answer: No. He’s this generation’s Steven Spielberg, even his so-so movies are unanimously loved by audiences and critics. The only sad thing is The Dark Knight Rises, if you believe Christian Bale and Nolan, is the last outing in this acclaimed and beloved Batman franchise. So while I’m beyond excited for the release of The Dark Knight Rises on July 20, 2012, it’s also a little bittersweet. By the looks of this full-length trailer, it also might be a big fat punch to the soft parts. We don’t know the full extent of the story, except some of the characters – Bane (Tom Hardy), Catwoman (Anne Hathaway) – and that it’s set eight years after the events of The Dark Knight. From the look of the trailer, Bane (the guy wearing Heath Ledger’s Brokeback Mountain jacket and a futuristic Hannibal Lecter breathing mask) is looking to lay a world of hurt on Gotham and Batman/Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale). Considering we see a smashed cowl in the poster above and a dude, possibly Bruce Wayne/Batman, limping with a cane in, what might be, Wayne Manor, this could be evidence that Nolan and company have possibly incorporated happenings from the 1993 comic, The Man Who Broke the Bat, wherein Bane learns Batman’s secret identity, ambushes him at Wayne Manor and attacks him in the Batcave, breaking his back and leaving him a paraplegic. I’m not sure the timeline of events in The Dark Knight Rises, but I’d bet Batman gets his ass kicked and then comes back for redemption. Take a close look at the trailer below and at the teaser trailer and let me know if you think I’m on the right track. Regardless of the story, I can’t imagine this movie being nothing short of pure win. The Dark Knight Rises is directed by Christopher Nolan and stars Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Gary Oldman and Marion Cotillard. It rolls into theaters on July 20, 2012.

Judas H. Priest! I cannot believe I sat through a second showing of Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 just to catch a big screen glimpse of the much-anticipated, long-awaited teaser trailer for The Dark Knight Rises, due in theaters July 20, 2012. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed The Deathly Hallows – Part 2, but I’m no Hogwarts zealot. Once is enough for me. Still, Christopher Nolan’s musk of perfection led me to the theater and I did catch the preview, which clocks in at a little over a minute. Teaser doesn’t even do it justice. If The Dark Knight Rises was a stripper, I got a glimpse of ankle and that’s about it. And from what I’ve seen thus far, I’m torn. Part of me was buoyed and intrigued, the other half was juggling ho-hums and sighs. So what do we gather from the teaser? Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) is in the hospital talking raspy to, we assume, Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale), and sort of simultaneously complaining that Batman went on hiatus and imploring the Caped Crusader to join the fight again. Other than the graphic from the teaser poster, there is no knew footage in the first portion of the teaser, just shots from the other two films and Ra’s al Ghul’s (Liam Neeson) speech about becoming a legend from Batman Begins. I think what I hate most about the teaser and what made me sour was the standard “Every Hero Has a Journey…Every Journey Has an End” text. Did we really need that bit of type? That was the best Nolan and Co. could manage for this first glimpse at the final Batman movie? I don’t like it. It seems easy and cheap. Still, even with that minor complaint, the preview is a teaser and it does just that. We are left to wonder where Batman has gone, what has cropped up since he’s been out of the crimefighting picture, and we’re given a couple quick flashes of Bane (Tom Hardy) to whet our villainous appetite. We’re still left to wonder how Selina Kyle/Catwoman (Anne Hathaway) fits into the picture, as well as how significant the roles of Marion Cotillard (Inception), Juno Temple (Year One) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception) will be in The Dark Knight Rises. Alas, we’ll most likely have to wait until the full trailer is released, and, based on Nolan’s past timelines, I wouldn’t expect that to hit the theaters and the web until this December at the earliest. At any rate, that’s my two-cents. What say ye? Do you like the teaser, or were you disappointed like me?

The big buzz on the web this week, after a few fan-made trailers hit YouTube this past month, is whether or not a teaser trailer for The Dark Knight Rises would be attached to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2. I was at a press screening for the final Potter film last Monday, July 11, and Batman was no where to be found. However, I’m heading out to see Potter and Co. tomorrow for the sole purpose of catching a small glimpse of The Dark Knight Rises, easily the most anticipated movie of 2012. According to Screen Rant, the trailer is attached to The Deathly Hallows – Part 2, so if any AATM readers have seen the trailer, give us your thoughts. Did you wet yourself with excitement and anticipation? I know I sure as crap will. At any rate, check out the teaser poster for The Dark Knight Rises (click on the thumbnail for a super-sized version). Me likey. It’s bold and on first glance has an Inception feel to it. All I know is Christopher Nolan can do no wrong in my book. He is the Pixar of directors right now and I cannot wait for The Dark Knight Rises, especially considering my unabashed love for The Dark Knight and Batman Begins. Easily the best superhero movies ever made. Period.

I want to hate Red Riding Hood in the worst way. I really do. I want to pounce on director Catherine Hardwicke’s film and pummel it with accusations of zero creativity and kick it with the judgmental boot of milking the Twilight crowd for all they’re worth, but I just can’t muster the malice to point an accusing finger, mostly because I never found myself checking my watch during the 120 minute nouveau retelling of the classic Brothers Grimm folk tale. Trust me, I’m bewildered. Never in a million years would I have predicted I’d like Red Riding Hood more than Battle: Los Angeles. 25 year-old, big-eyed beauty, Amanda Seyfried (Letters to Juliet) is the girl with the red hood in this movie. Her name is Valerie and she lives in a small, rustic, forest village – Daggerhorn, to be specific – in some nondescript country where everyone is a farmer, woodcutter or blacksmith. As for the latter, when the story opens, Valerie is betrothed to Henry (Max Irons), the son of the local blacksmith. Valerie isn’t too happy with this arrangement because she has the hots for a dark, brooding woodcutter named Peter (Shiloh Fernandez) and has plans to steal away with him as soon as her parents (Billy Burke and Virginia Madsen) aren’t looking. Of course her plans come to a screeching halt when the town’s emergency bells start clanging and Valerie’s older sister, Lucy, is found dead in the woods, the apparent victim of the local werewolf, a beast that has been stalking Daggerhorn for decades. The townspeople collect their torches and weapons and march up the mountain to the wolf’s lair, intent on ridding the village of this menace once-and-for-all. They kill a wolf, but in the commotion, Henry’s father, the aforementioned blacksmith, is killed. After, as the villagers celebrate the death of the wolf, things really start to go all Days of Our Lives when Valerie learns that her sister Lucy is actually her half-sister, the ensuing child of a torrid love affair between her mother and, ironically, the just-embalmed town blacksmith, father of her fiancé. Oh the tangled webs we weave! Daggerhorn’s revelry soon comes to an end when Father Solomon (Gary Oldman), a witch and werewolf hunter, comes to town with his cadre of soldiers and giant, steel elephant. He tells the townsfolk the wolf they killed isn’t the ominous creature that has been harassing the village, but just a regular old wolf. He promises to vanquish the godless, devil-loving lycan and proceeds to launch his own little mini-inquisition. With Father Solomon incessantly warning Daggerhorn residents the werewolf is one of them, the townspeople begin to turn on each other and soon it’s hard to remember what is more dangerous, suspicious, me-first villagers, or the blood-thirsty werewolf. And I haven’t even touched on Valerie’s kooky old grandmother who lives in a shoddy old cabin deep in the forest. Could she somehow figure into this whole wolf nonsense? I wrote at the beginning of my review...

Am I the only person in America who doesn’t see the appeal of Amanda Seyfried? I didn’t see Mamma Mia! (thank the LORD), so maybe I’m missing some perspective that is vital in my critique, but I have seen Jennifer’s Body and I wasn’t that impressed. Either way, I’m getting ahead of myself. Who is not as important as what in the case of the upcoming horror movie Red Riding Hood, helmed by Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke. Honestly, upon seeing this trailer at the press screening for Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part I, I had two thoughts: First, and simple, was a prompt and succinct WTF!, and second was Red Riding Hood feels very, um, Twilighty. I’m not turned on by this preview, but I’m sure the target audience (those breathlessly waiting for Breaking Dawn and who think Stephanie Meyer invented werewolves) will think this movie is the bee’s knees. Red Riding Hood stars the aforementioned Seyfried as the title character, as well as Gary Oldman (The Book of Eli), Virginia Madsen (The Haunting in Connecticut), Billy Burke (Twilight) and Shiloh Fernandez (The United States of Tara). Further proof this movie is bait for Twilight lovers? Shiloh Fernandez was one of the finalists for the Edward Cullen role in Hardwicke’s Twilight. Check out the trailer after the jump and let me know your thoughts!

Apocalypticly isn’t a word, but this is a blog, so AP style, Strunk and White and my sixth grade English teacher can all suck it. Behold the newest poster for Denzel Washington’s new film, The Road The Book of Eli. Dan picked this as his Trailer Tuesday back in July and while the trailer wasn’t anything spectacular, I’m starting to warm to the idea of Denzel and Gary Oldman going toe-to-toe in this post-apocalyptic action movie from the Hughes Brothers (Albert and Allen), the directing twins who gave us Menace II Society and From Hell. I should also point out having Mila Kunis in the cast does not hurt this movie’s chances with me. She’s smokin’ hot and on this Thanksgiving holiday, I tip my hat to her gene pool and hope she performs better than she did in last year’s craptastic Max Payne. Check out the poster (click it to supersize) and let me know your thoughts. The Book of Eli hits theaters on January 15, 2010.

At first glance, the cast for Disney’s A Christmas Carol, directed by Robert Zemeckis (The Polar Express, Forrest Gump, Back to the Future) looks fantastic. You have Jim Carrey (Yes Man), Colin Firth (Mama Mia!), Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight), Robin Wright Penn (State of Play), Michael J. Fox (Stuart Little), Bob Hoskins (Doomsday) and Cary Elwes (The Alphabet Killer). But then so did the cast for Beowulf, Zemeckis last film and his last venture into the photorealistic 3D animation world, and we all know how that turned out – craptastic. The new trailer for Disney’s A Christmas Carol is posted below. The animation looks nothing short of spellbinding and no matter how many times the tale is told, Dickens’ A Christmas Carol never grows old. However, in my opinion, what will either make or break this movie is Jim Carrey. Just how much of his loud, grating overacting audiences can stomach and how he is used will be either the rotten egg or the golden goose for this family feature. Considering Carrey is providing likeness and voice for Ebenezer Scrooge, The Ghost of Christmas Past, Present and Christmas Yet to Come, the likelihood of me wanting to gouge my eyeballs out is fairly high. Disney’s retelling of the Dickens classic opens in theaters, including Disney Digital 3D and IMAX 3D, on November 6, 2009.

We’ve mentioned Denzel here at AATM before. While everyone loves Mr. Washington as an actor, we contend from role to role Denzel simply plays Denzel. And that’s cool with me, because I like chest-pounding Denzel and smiling-I’m-getting-frustrated-and-you’re-about-to-get-it Denzel. I like calm Denzel. I like stoic Denzel. And it’s a good thing Book of Eli has Denzel attached as star, because everyone else likes Denzel, too and post-apocalyptic movies seem to fare worse for wear than others. Which is too bad, because I like them and all their depressing portents. And that’s what Book of Eli is- post-nuclear war tale about a guy who wanders around with a book full of secrets to save everyone who’s not growing third arms out of their ears and buttcheeks. Oh, and did I mention this movie also costars one of my top five favorite actors Mr. Gary Oldman, because it does. Eli also stars Mila “Am I a lifeless TV star destined to fade out in movies or not” Kunis, which isn’t a draw as much as statement that post-nuclear America will still birth cute girls. Book of Eli hits in January of 2010, which may not be soon enough because the trailer looks intriguing to say the least. Am I wrong?
