It takes a lot to offend me. It really does. In most cases, swearing, nudity and violence in movies doesn’t rankle me or leave me feeling like I need a bath. The fact that Your Highness, the new comedy starring Danny McBride (Tropic Thunder), James Franco (127 Hours) and Natalie Portman (Black Swan), made me feel like I need to scrub my body with Clorox and spend a fortnight reading the Holy Bible speaks volumes about how puerile and callow this amazingly non-funny movie truly is. Your Highness is just flat-out dirty. Set in some far away enchanted land, on a planet with two moons, the story of Your Highness revolves around two brothers – the noble warrior, Prince Fabious (Franco) and the selfish, foul and, well, ignoble Prince Thadeous (McBride) – who must join forces to kill an evil wizard (Justin Theroux) that has kidnapped Fabious’ bride-to-be (ZooeyDeschanel). From that starting point, the movie spends inordinate amounts of time listening to, primarily Thadeous, bitch and moan and talk endlessly about masturbating, having sex and smoking pot. This is all thatched together with a bounteous supply of f-words and other notoriously crass words for male and female genitalia. And you know what? I’ve heard these words in a hundred other movies – films that I enjoy and would watch again – but in Your Highness they come across as a noisy, infantile drumbeat of filth. There is no point and no direction. Considering McBride co-wrote the screenplay, I seriously question his definition of humor. At any rate, the two brothers, after their companions – including a naked eunuch - betray them, find themselves entrapped by a band of naked female warriors (is it safe to say this was a booby trap?) and this leads them to joining forces with Isabel (Natalie Portman), a warrior maiden who is also seeking to exact revenge on the aforementioned evil wizard. They traipse across picturesque landscapes, Fabious is captured and the rest of the band ends up facing a well-hung minotaur in their mini-quest to get some sword of the unicorn. As expected, they eventually battle the wizard, Thadeus is redeemed and becomes a hero like his brother and everyone gets their happy ending. Problem is we’ve totally lost interest on the way. Fantasy movies generally suck, so a fantasy comedy tanks even worse. I love a good R-rated comedy, but the ones I love are chock full of honesty and heart. Life is R-rated and when comedy reflects life it’s the oh-my-gosh-I-am-laughing-so-hard-I-can’t-breathe kind of laughs that ensue. Your Highness has no heart and no resemblance or simlitude to real life. In the end, it’s 102 minutes of repugnant shock moments that produce more cringes than smiles. I will never see this movie again.

Man oh man, I want to embrace the upcoming Thor movie in the worst way, and for three main reasons: First, I dig superhero movies, even though I never had a fondness for Marvel or Thor. Second, I’m keen on seeing how an unorthodox choice for director – Kenneth Branagh (Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets) – stacks up to the gold standard of Nolan and Favreau. Lastly, even though they cast the guy off the Brawny paper towels package as Thor (and his beard and superhero mullet look super lame), the rest of the cast grabs my interest. Yeah, I’m talking about Anthony Hopkins (The Rite), Natalie Portman (Black Swan), Colm Feore (The Chronicles of Riddick), Stellan Skarsgård (Angels & Demons), Rene Russo (Yours, Mine and Ours) and Kat Dennings (Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist). Marvel regulars Samuel L. Jackson, as Nick Fury, and Clark Gregg, as Agent Coulson, show up in Thor, as well. Check out the trailer after the jump and let me know your thoughts. Thor hits theaters on May 6, 2011 and will also be available, sadly, in 3D.

I’m not sure I can find the right words to describe how hard I laughed through this redband (read: NSFW) trailer for the upcoming comedy, Your Highness, directed by David Gordon Green (Pineapple Express). It stars James Franco (127 Hours) and Danny McBride (Due Date) as two brothers who set out on a quest to save Franco’s girlfriend, played by Zooey Deschanel (Yes Man), from an evil wizard, played by Justin Theroux, who is probably better known for writing Iron Man 2 and Tropic Thunder than any of his acting. They are joined by Natalie Portman who, aside from being amazingly hot in her warrior maiden outfit, plays some kind of archer ready to help the brothers kick the wizard’s booty. Your Highness hits theaters on April 8, 2011 and is my queue of must-see movies for 2011. Check out the trailer after the jump and give me your thoughts.

Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis Get Nasty in The Black Swan

Whether you like Darren Aronofsky’s films or not is entirely a matter of choice, but one thing cannot be debated or argued – Aronofsky is a visionary filmmaker and a cinematic artist. He made waves at the Sundance Film Festival in the late 1990s with his black and white thriller, Pi, and followed that film with the disturbing and haunting Requiem for a Dream, the dreamlike and romantic The Fountain, and the gritty Oscar darling, The Wrestler. His newest picture, The Black Swan, opens in limited release on December 1, 2010 and is scheduled to open the Venice International Film Festival next month. The Black Swan stars Natalie Portman (Brothers) and Mila Kunis (The Book of Eli) as two ballerinas working for a New York City stage production of Swan Lake. Portman is the innocent White Swan and Kunis is the sensual Black Swan, and as you can see from watching the trailer, their seemingly tetchy rivalry turns into a bizarre friendship, wherein it seems Portman goes a little nuts. One thing is certain, the look and feel of this preview seems to mirror the bright visual sensation Aronofsky paints in Pi, Requiem for a Dream and The Fountain. I’m interested to see if Aronofsky can follow the success he enjoyed with The Wrestler, and I’m also interested to see the performances of Kunis and Portman. Both are extremely beautiful women, but Portman is a tad overrated in my book and Kunis hasn’t given me anything but a pretty face to be impressed over. What do you think? After watching the trailer, do you have any interest?

I’m always a little hesitant to go bonkers over a trailer because, like a jilted lover, I just don’t want to get burned again after emotionally investing myself in a two-minute clip. This is my state of mind with “Brothers,” the new film from Jim Sheridan (“In America”), starring Tobey Maguire (“Spider-Man”), Natalie Portman (“The Other Boleyn Girl”) and Jake Gyllenhaal (“Rendition”). My heart strings were tugged a little bit while watching this preview, but again – how much of that is slick marketing and how much of the good stuff will translate to the screen? That’s the eternal question in Hollywood, one marked by countless letdowns. The case for this movie being gold sure seems solid. The only one I question in this movie is Tobey Maguire. I think he’s caught the Mark Hamill curse and will forever be seen as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. He comes across as a petulant man-child in nearly every movie, including “Seabuscuit” and “The Good German.” I think his only break from that might be his 15 second cameo in the “Satan’s Alley” trailer in “Tropic Thunder.” Gyllenhaal has a little more wiggle room with me, as his roles in “Brokeback Mountain,” “Jarhead” and “Zodiac” are all strong acting. And Portman? Well, she’s just drop dead hot, so even though she’s questionable sometimes in the acting department, I’ll grant her a pardon and hope I can get past her young woman looks to believe she’s a mother of two young kids in this movie. Take a peek below. What do you think? Is this one to see?
