Predators Redband Trailer Suggest Oodles of Gore and Lots of Lame

Predators was a movie I was looking forward to watching this July, but somewhere between the vagina-mouthed baddies releasing a heard of the oily dogs from Avatar – this time juiced with rabies and clam cave maws – and the whole The Most Dangerous Game: Alien Style story foundation has my enthusiasm meter scraping rock bottom. Will I see it? You bet your juicy booty I will. This could be good, so I’ll give it a shot, but considering Robert Rodgriguez is a hack living off past glory, I’m guessing this will be a poop flavored package tied with some fangdangled CGI ribbons and bows.

Check out the new redband trailer after the jump and give me your two cents por favor.

Trailer Tuesday: Predators

May 25, 2010 Trailer Tuesday, Trailers Comments Off

I have routinely crapped on 2010′s line-up of summer movies, but Predators is one I have high hopes for. Alas, I also had high hopes for MacGruber and that movie was nothing short of absolute garbage. Probably one of the least funny “comedies” I’ve ever seen. Ever. Personally, not to be Debbie Downer, but I think we’re going to see much more disappointment before the summer’s over.

Anyway, check out the trailer below for Predators and let me know if you’re jazzed for this like I am.

New Predators Trailer

March 19, 2010 Coming Soon, Trailers 1 Comment

Last week, fan pants were soiled when a behind the scenes teaser for Predators upstaged SXSW and quickly made its way to AATM. Not a week later, the teaser trailer hits, showing more scenes of running, sweating and nervous glancing.

For its part, the trailer is pretty effective — even more so if you haven’t seen the teaser– but I’m not on board. Still.

Robert Rodriguez, who’s not directing but has his fingerprints all over the project, isn’t a guy I have a lot of faith in. The stylistically fantastic Sin City and grind-house silly Planet Terror are both emotionally repugnant “Huh-huh-huh” films– movies that value the “wouldn’t it be cool if” over soul. Combine that with the last few iterations of the Predator, especially the mean-spirited, nihilistic AVP: Requiem, and there’s plenty of room for this new entry to take on the same cretinous tone: One where the Predator went from a threatening, codified hunter to an interstellar slasher.

Still, Predator remains a franchise I’ll pay money to see every time. Hopefully, with the emphasis on “the hunt”, we’ll get something remotely worthy of association with John McTiernan’s 1987 classic.

Predators Sneak Peak = Cinematic Viagra

March 13, 2010 Clips, Coming Soon, News 3 Comments

Oh man oh man oh man. How cool is this sneak peak clip from the upcoming summer release, Predators, directed by Nimród Antal (Vacancy, Armored) and produced by Robert Rodriguez (Shorts)? Ooooh, let me answer – pretty friggin’ cool. Opening on July 9, I just can’t imagine any way this movie won’t be pure awesome, and based off what I see of Adrian Brody (The Brothers Bloom), I think my assertion his casting was a great choice is more than evident.

Predators also stars Topher Grace (Spider-Man 3), Alice Braga (Blindness), Laurence Fishburne (Armored) and Danny Trejo (Grindhouse). If you feel a slight rise in your shorts when you hear Arnold say “get to the chopppah!” in Predator, than chances are you won’t need your daily dose of ExtenZe this evening. Enjoy!

Adrien Brody Joining Predators is a Good Thing

October 8, 2009 News 4 Comments

AdrienBrodyWaaaaay back in April, Dan posted a story about Robert Rodriguez (Shorts) rebooting the beloved 80s action flick Predator, and since then we’ve come to find out the movie will be titled Predators, with Rodriguez producing the and Nimród Antal (Vacancy) taking the director’s wheel. We’ve also come to learn that Adrien Brody (King Kong) has signed on in the lead role as “heroic mercenary” (isn’t that like saying “awesome douchebag?”), joining the already-signed cast of Alice Braga (I Am Legend), Walton Goggins (The Miracle at St. Anna), Oleg Taktarov (Righteous Kill), Mahershalalhashbaz Ali (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) and Rodriguez regular, Danny Trejo (Planet Terror). I would just like to point out that Mahershalalhashbaz (“destruction is imminent”) might be the coolest name on the planet.

Regarding the casting of Adrien Brody, some of the comments I’ve read on various movie websites are pretty negative about his addition to Predators. Seems there is a crowd of Rodriguez fans that were hoping for some WWE roidhound to hoist an M60 and blow clam-cave-mouthed aliens to smithereens. I can’t disagree more with their whining about the casting of Brody and think he is a stellar choice. He showed me he can do action in 2005 with Peter Jackson’s King Kong, and watching The Brothers Bloom earlier this week reminded me he is a stellar thespian, as well.

Predators hits theaters on July 9, 2010 and I have added it to my must-see list for next year.

Predator might “Get to the Choppaaaaaah!”

arnold-and-predatorSince we’re in the era of the reboot (Star Trek, James Bond, Friday the 13th), why not get to rebooting some Predator– the quintessential high point of 80′s blow-em-up and a particularly sweaty menage-a-trois of muscle on guns on alien action. “Why not indeed”, I say.

On the whole, I cling to very few action movies of the 80s– too much hair, too many trampolined bodies and never enough wince-worthy one liners. Of course, there’s always exceptions– mine just happens to be Predator. 22 years later, the film still holds up, with  more than a few movies having taken cues from its action beats and premise. Apparently, Sin City (and Desperado… and Spy Kids… and Planet Terror) director Robert Rodriguez whipped out a treatment for a sequel called Predators about 15 years ago– a treatment which has been getting some 20th Century Fox reconsideration over the last four months and has his Troublemakers Studio attached to produce– despite the apparent demise of the franchise at the introduction of the weak-willed and lazy Aliens vs. Predator series.

I have to admit a geektacular bit of unwarranted protectionism on this franchise, and to hear the new plot possibly revolving around a bunch of commandos being taken captive and back to the Predator home planet to encounter alien critters both large and small has me feeling all kinds of trepidation. That and I’m unimpressed by Robert Rodriguez’ films– not because he’s got no skill, the guy’s amazing and a true independent who does everything from screenwriting to effects to scoring in his “garage”– but because his penchant for extraneous gore and shock isn’t my bag.

In the mean time, we’ll keep you posted on any new developments should you care… and any word on whether Arnold Schwarznegger’s legendary line “Git to da Choppah!” receives a second chance at life.

Movie Review: The Last Airbender (F)

By ANDY MORGAN There are very few movies I completely and utterly abhor. Generally, I can usually find something positive or likeable in a film, even if said cinema is receiving disgust and scorn en masse from most fall-in-line movie critics. I relish the truth that I don’t always see eye-to-eye with most critics and [...]

Movie Review: The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (B)

By ANDY MORGAN Making fun of Twilight fans and bemoaning Stephanie Meyer’s novels and the subsequent movies is almost as easy as drumming up sarcastic jabs about Lindsey Lohan, Paris Hilton or Miley Cyrus. There’s no effort required. It’s easy. And it’s also out of control. It’s almost as popular to dump on the vampire-werewolf [...]

By DAN VINTON If there’s one thing The Last Airbender does well, it proves any mystique surrounding M. Night Shaymalan is gone. With this coffin-bound nail, all residual goodwill The Sixth Sense director retained from followup successes like Unbreakable, Signs and even the creepy but fatally flawed The Village has been throttled by his is [...]
