I might be one of only a handful of people on planet Earth who have never read one word of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series of books. Let’s just get that out of the way right now, because you need to know where my opinions are coming from. Unlike the hordes of Harry Potter fans, during the movies I don’t pick up on all the little ins and outs and various wizard secrets. People are laughing and crying and I’m staring at the screen straight-faced and scratching my head. And that’s okay, because fortunately for moviegoers, you don’t have to read the books to enjoy the movies, especially the last three or four. Besides, let’s be perfectly frank, hating Harry Potter in any way, shape or form is akin to hating bunnies, sunshine, rainbows and apple pie. It’s just not something anyone with a pulse can pull off. The Harry Potter movies are fantastic and the final movie, The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 is the perfect conclusion to this epic franchise. When we last left Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Hermione (Emma Watson) and Ron (Rupert Grint) in The Deathly Hallows – Part 1, they were on the run from Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes), learning about Horcruxs, finding swords at the bottom of lakes, and discovering the legend of the Deathly Hallows, i.e. the Cloak of Invisibility, the Resurrection Stone and the Elder Wand. The movie ended with Dobby taking one for the team and Voldemort rifling through Dumbledore’s tomb in search for the Elder Wand. In a nutshell, things were looking pretty gloomy. Guess what? Things don’t get much better when The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 opens, and I’m not talking about the absurd 3D the studio decided to slap onto the movie (for shame!). Harry knows Voldemort has the Elder Wand and receives some crucial wand guidance from one of the people they rescued from Malfoy Manor, Ollivander (John Hurt), who explains Draco Malfoy’s (Tom Felton) wand has changed allegiance (from Harry to Draco). Harry also negotiates with Griphook the goblin to lead the trio into Gringotts and to Bellatrix Lestrange’s (Helena Bonham Carter) vault, where Harry knows another Horcrux is waiting. From there the three friends head to Hogsmede (where they meet Dumbledore’s grouchy brother, Aberforth) and then, with the help of Aberforth (Ciarán Hinds) and Neville Longbottom (Matthew Lewis), they enter Hogwarts via a secret passage and the stage is set for the movie’s climatic ending. I think it’s fantastic storytelling by Rowling and impeccably fitting the movie ends at Hogwarts, arguably the center of the universe for all wizards. From a cinephile and story standpoint, there’s not much to nitpick with The Deathly Hallows – Part 2. The movie is dark, tense and chock full of action. With that said, there are enough light moments, i.e. romance and humor, to break up the drumbeat of good versus evil and the epic conclusion we all know has been coming for ten years. And while I wasn’t a huge fan of the film’s...

Next to the Star Wars saga and the Indiana Jones films, there was no other movie I loved more in the 1980s than Clash of the Titans. After watching Perseus turn the Kraken into stone with Medusa’s severed head, I was obsessed with Greek mythology. I gobbled up any book I could find at the school library. I even dressed up as Perseus on Halloween in 1982. I was 100 percent sure the third-grade ladies would be swooning over me just like thousands of women were lusting after the tan and shaggy-haired Harry Hamlin. I brought my plastic sword to school and my mom made me a toga. Nevertheless, my enthusiasm was shattered when I arrived at school and, after going to the bathroom to change, realized the toga was too short. If I bent over, all my classmates would receive an eyeful of Underoos and eight year-old prunehole. This meant I had to sport my jeans beneath my Perseus ensemble, which meant I looked like a complete idiot. I was no Harry Hamlin. The magic was kaput. I don’t mean to use adolescent tragedy as segue for rating Louis Leterrier’s Clash of the Titans remake, but the connection is inevitable. The director, who I thought resurrected The Hulk from an ignominious Ang Lee death with 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, sputters and ultimately fails to bring any sort of pizzazz, depth or enchantment to the age-old tale of the demigod Perseus, the son of Zeus. And that’s unfortunate, because with a little more story and engagement, this bombastic panorama of special effects might have a little more staying power and charm. Nothing in the 2010 version of Clash of the Titans story-wise is extraordinarily different from the 1981 version, with the crux of the narrative laid squarely on the shoulders of Perseus (Sam Worthington). Like the original, Perseus was plopped into the ocean with his mom after King Acrisius (Jason Flemyng) discovered Zeus (Liam Neeson) had knocked-up his wife. In this outing, Perseus is rescued by a fisherman (Pete Postlethwaite) and raised by the old man as his own son. But, like Superman, Perseus knows he’s different and after Hades (Ralph Fiennes) kills his fishing family, Perseus is on a collision course with the gods. He will have his vengeance. Perseus winds up in Argos, a kingdom dead set on giving the middle finger to Zeus and his pals. They’re toppling statues of the gods and the king and queen are talking about how their daughter, Andromeda (Alexa Davalos), is hotter than Aphrodite. This doesn’t sit to well, obviously, with the gods, who need the love and worship of the humans to make them strong. In their frustration, they send bad boy Hades to Argos, and after turning the beautiful queen into Donatella Versace lookalike, the god of the Underworld tells Argos they are going to reap the nuclear destruction of the Kraken unless they sacrifice Andromeda to the massive beast. In the original, Perseus dashes off to visit the...

First, a warning: Loaded with the stuff eyes love gnoshing, Clash of the Titans should be seen in two dimensions, not three. Filmed top to bottom for a 2D release, Clash of the Titans composition, lighting, effects and edits were created for the unaided eye. As a result, Clash of the Titans retrofitted 3D presentation is a dim, vision punishing mess of double imaging and off-kilter depth; slipshod artifacts that disrupt viewing to the point of souring it. Technological grumbling aside, Clash of the Titans the movie fares slightly better than its 3D boondoggle thanks to its world of exotic pizazz and the goofy strength of mythological fantasy. Decidedly darker than the 1981 original, Clash of the Titans earnestly updates its predecessor’s aesthetic with armor for togas, cornrows for mop-tops and earnest crankiness for good humor, but suffers from an equal distribution of emotional vacancy and watch-checking sag when monsters aren’t stomping, roaring and slithering onscreen. Tired of the Gods’ petty cruelty mankind has taken to relying on their own strength. They’ve stopped praying, stormed Mount Olympus and defied the Gods. Petulant rebellion doesn’t sit well with Zeus (Liam Neeson), who sends brother Hades (a very brotherly looking Ralph Fiennes) to unleash some God-fearing terror on the city of Argos in the form of a choice: offer up the princess Andromeda (Alexa Davalos) or face the wrath of an angry Kraken in 10 days time. Perseus (Sam Worthington), surrogate son of a God-stomped fisherman and bastard son of Zeus, signs up to stop the Kraken, save the princess and avenge the death of his adopted family. With a handful of gruff warriors and mysterious hot-sage Io (the angelic Gemma Arterton), Perseus suits up and sets out for some Grecian style vengeance. Along the way he stabs/beheads monsters, rides a Pegasus, discovers his lineage and shows the Gods a good ol’ fashioned what-for. 1981′s Clash of the Titans was a light, mythological adventure that basked in the charm of its Harryhausen-born monsters. Director Louis Leterrier’s remake keeps some of that same DNA, but never finds time to introduce a relationship that isn’t a one-dimensional key to unlocking a revelation or a character who isn’t dying to lead the movie into the next effect sequence. The movie feels heavily pared down to action sequences and relies on the clamoring largess of special effects and fantasy to connect with the audience. In a movie less concerned about character, all that stuff could be dismissed. But Clash of the Titans does makes efforts to indicate its character relationships are important– the quest and subsequent plot depend on them. Unfortunately, the decision to amp action over connective tissue bumps princess Andromeda, Io, a pair of tag-along hunters and an adversarial relationship between Perseus and warrior leader Draco to nothing more than passing nods– and when characters start taking dirt naps, it’s difficult to imagine why it matters. Still, there’s fun to be found in Clash‘s creatures and the hijinks of Fiennes’ oozing, duplicitous Hades vs....

Okay, it’s 100 percent official – I can’t wait for March 10, 2010. This new Clash of the Titans trailer is quite similar to the teaser released a few months ago, but there is enough new bits and pieces that I’ve officially taken the fast train to Nerdtown. I loved the 1981 version starring Harry Hamlin (LA Law), but it was ripe for a remake. From what I can tell – and again, I’m just going off the trailer – this version with Liam Neeson (Taken), Sam Worthington (Terminator Salvation), Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace) and Ralph Fiennes (The Reader) is going to be quite the spectacle. Take a peek below and share your thoughts! What do you think of the Kraken?

Remember how cool the 1981 version of Clash of the Titans used to be when you were five years-old and the Ray Harryhausen creatures looked ever-so-real? Remember how lame that movie looks now? Don’t fret, because from the looks of this teaser trailer, director Louis Leterrier has made the tale of Perseus, Andromeda, Medussa and the Krakken all shiny again, with a little bit of kick-ass video game zip to boot. My only problem with this trailer? The tagline at the end: TITANS! WILL! CLASH! Lame. Otherwise, I’m sufficiently juiced for March 2010.

I really haven’t delved too deeply into the release schedule for 2010 yet, but one movie I am absolutely looking forward to is Louis Leterrier’s (The Incredible Hulk) remake of the 1981 classic, The Clash of the Titans. Next to the Star Wars and Indiana Jones trilogies, I’m not sure there is another movie from the 1980s that captivated and enthralled me as much as Clash. In fact, I loved the movie so much that in third grade I dressed up as Perseus for Halloween. We got to wear our costumes to school and my mom had made my toga too small, so instead of flashing my classmates my nubile derriere, I wore it with my Toughskins jeans and felt like a dork. Clash of the Titans hits theaters on March 26, 2010 and boasts quite the cast. First and foremost, the name you will hear the most, is Sam Worthington, the star of the turd-a-rific Terminator Salvation and the upcoming Avatar. And while he looks like a rockin’ Perseus, Worthington has done nothing to prove to me he’s here to stay in Hollywood. No, I’m more excited about the supporting players in Clash of the Titans, namely, Liam Neeson (Taken) as Zeus, Ralph Fiennes (The Reader) as Hades, Danny Huston (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) as Poseidon and the lovely Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace) as Io. Some other faces you’ll recognize are Alexa Davalos (Defiance) as Andromeda, Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale) as Draco, Polly Walker (HBO’s Rome) as Cassiopeia and Vincent Regan (300) as Kepheus. That’s a lot of names to digest, but needless to say, I have high hopes for this movie. Apparently so does Empire Magazine, as their latest issue highlights Clash of the Titans as 2010’s “hottest blockbuster.” Whatever that means. One has to think we should see a trailer soon for the movie, considering its due in theaters in six months. I’m banking on a November or December trailer premiere, so until then, enjoy the pics from Empire below.

Lord Voldemort, aka Hollywood actor Ralph Fiennes, has been tapped to play Hades in Louis Leterrier’s (“The Incredible Hulk”) remake of “Clash of the Titans.” Chances are you don’t remember the first one, but I do and it was awesome. Not only because it told the story of Perseus, but because it was chock full of nudity. Yay for early 1980s PG movies! As a side note, it looks like Liam Neeson, most recently of the pissed-off-dad movie “Taken,” will lend his soothing barritone, and his Qui-Gon Jinn wig and beard, to the role of Zeus. I don’t know about you, but these two thespians definitely have upped my excitement for Leterrier’s remake.
