Congratulations to the New Orleans Saints on winning Super Bowl XLIV in what may have been the most boring NFL championship since, well, the last time the Indianapolis Colts went to the Super Bowl in 2007. And while I love football as much as the next dude, I won’t lie – I anticipate the commercial breaks in the hope I’ll see some genius advertising or some phenomenal movie preview. This year’s commercials and trailers were ho-hum, except for the Google “Search On” ad (who thought you could tell a love story using a search engine in less than a minute?), the Doritos “House Rules” commercial and the Careerbuilder.com “Casual Friday” spot, the rest were either bizarre, unfunny or beyond stale (Bud Light, I’m talking to you). Even more glaring was the absence of trailers for Iron Man 2, The A-Team, Clash of the Titans, Toy Story 3, Shrek Forever After, Despicable Me and Tron: Legacy. Here’s a rundown of the movie trailers shown during Super Bowl XLIV. Click the movie name to watch the preview. The Last Airbender I really hope there is more to this movie than a gut full of lame CGI and crazy karate, because that’s all I got from this spot. Plus, happily pasting M. Night Shyamalan’s name in the 33 second spot three times doesn’t give me any confidence in the project. Did you see The Happening? I did. This movie will suck. Robin Hood I love Ridley Scott, but there’s nothing new here to whet my appetite for this May 14, 2010 release. It was recycled footage and actually seemed dated, as the 30 second clip didn’t even have the movie’s release date at the end, instead simply saying “summer.” I’ll see Robin Hood based on my sheer adoration of Scott’s films, but I’m just about done with the close up of the arrow leaving the bow. Lame. The Wolfman Nothing new to see here – just more replays of Benicio Del Toro not needing make-up to play the hairy wolfman – but I suppose with it hitting theaters on February 12, this wasn’t a bad placement. I am so happy they rated this movie R, because anything else would have been akin to dry-humping the Twilight fanbase, and heaven knows they don’t need any more candy. Shutter Island Once again, like The Wolfman, nothing spectacular, just a nicely timed trailer for Martin Scorsese’s new film that hits theaters on February 19th. I’ve read the book, and if the movie is in the same ballpark as what Dennis Lehane put on paper, this ought to be a nice treat. Still, will anyone remember this when awards season arrives next year? Alice in Wonderland Ugh, if the rest of America is like me, then watching this short preview probably cemented the monumental bomb this Tim Burton movie will assuredly prove to be. Sure, Alice in Wonderland is lathered in Burton’s quirkiness, but is that a good thing? I’m not so sure. Bright colors and craziness...

Ridley “I own too many films in Dan’s Lifetime Top 10″ Scott’s been around the block a few times when it comes to directing swords, dirt, slow-mo “Aaaaaargh”s and men being cloven in the forest thanks to 1492: Conquest of Paradise, Gladiator and the unjustly maligned Kingdom of Heaven. He’s now chalked up another– as we posted way back in April, Ridley Scott’s been hard at work on Robin Hood. So have Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett and William Hurt. Not so sure about the Merry Men, however. Mincing man-pals aside, the idea of a new take on Robin Hood feels genuinely… unexciting. Where do you go with this one? We know where Scott’s going to take it– a little more gritty, a little more blue filtered and all kinds of beautifully shot. Scott’s got an automatic pass as far as I’m concerned, but I have a feeling we’ve seen this style and story before. So yeah. Been there done that-ism won’t stop me from looking forward to it, but can everyone else say the same? I guess we’ll leave that prognosticating to 2010. In the mean time, all Scott’s hard work has lead to this one moment: The debut of the Robin Hood trailer here at AATM. Enjoy:

So you know there’s a new-fangled Robin Hood coming up and you know with names like Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe, there’s going to be some sneaky-sneaky and unofficial photos smuggled from either the set or the bushes adjacent to, but not on, the set. AICN has posted said pics up for your viewing pleasure. The coolest ones can be found there, but I had no idea Robin and his Heterosexually Merry Men beat Sherwood Forest into submission via a Kawasaki Mule…. and that’s only the least of my marvels. The real highlight of this picture is the blindingly red-bearded Scott Grimes (playing, appropriately, Will Scarlettt) tearing it up with Russell Crowe. Yes, THE Scott Grimes– Critters 2 Scott Grimes– making a rare foray back to the big screen. Robin Hood is going to be RAD.

Andy and I had a little disagreement a while back. He said the 90′s Costner vehicle Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves was crapola. I disagreed. After viewing it again a few nights ago, I think I might have to acquiesce… it might be a little dated and a little silly. Or maybe I wasn’t feeling 90′s action vibe at the time. Either way, I’m sorry, Kevin Reynolds. I’ll still go to bat for Waterworld and Count of Monte Cristo though… but not Tristan + Isolde. So three cheers for the march of time. Since Prince of Thieves is a full decade and a half behind us, Robin is due for a renaissance: If you didn’t know Ridley Scott was well into filming his next project Robin Hood for a 2010 release, consider yourself informed. Russell Crowe plays the 00′s version (with William Hurt and Cate Blanchett throwing in some acting prowess as well) and USA Today debuted the first pic earlier today. It’s not a doozy, but with all the Russell Crowe love flowing around here since State of Play, it’s more than enough to feed your daily Russell hit. Since it’s a USA Today exclusive, click on the cropped portion of the image below to see it in full over there.
