I can’t tell you where until March 19, but know this: C-list actors from The Twilight Saga: New Moon will be at a Salt Lake City retailer on Friday from 10PM to 12AM to celebrate the release of the DVD and Blu-ray. That’s right, check back on Friday, March 19th and I’ll let you know where you can wait in line to stare and scream in pure fan ecstasy at Christian Serratos (Angela), Justin Chon (Eric) and Michael Welch (Mike). I don’t know who the dudes are, but I do know Ms. Serratos created quite the stir here at AATM when I posted on her posing nude for PETA. According to the press release, there will be contests, autographed merchandise raffles, giveaways, limited edition merchandise (including collectible clothing and memorabilia). Boy oh boy! I don’t know about you, but that sounds like it could be the most gag-inducing best night of my life! Lord knows my existence would be incomplete if I don’t see some pasty goth girl with an Edward and Bella tattoo, or an army of braces-wearing tweens lusting, with their moms, over Jacob’s six-pack abs. Again, check back on Friday for more details! ***UPDATE*** Just got word on the location of the New Moon craziness: From 10PM to midnight on 3/19 - Wal-Mart 13502 S. Hamilton View Road Riverton, UT 84065 If you go, take some pics and email them to me at andrewamorgan AT gmail.com. We’ll post them up!

I realize it’s easy and popular to bash the Twihards, Stephanie Meyer’s craptastic writing and the whole fabric of the Twilight universe, but while I poke fun at the fanbase (divided equally between cougars and those who just bought training bras), I do think some people tend to bash the movies and books simply because of the mass appeal. However, with that said, when I see Twilight fans sending ignorant hate mail, it just makes me want to mock them ceaselessly. Check out the email below, sent to George Roush of the website LatinoReview.com. If you’re having a bad Friday and need a good laugh, read Kayla Patterson’s words below or visit their website to see the email complete with attached images. Try not to punch your own loins in the process. Yes, she is that dumb. To whom this may concern: This movie was a complete waste and I feel that it offends ALL Twilight Fans around the world, that including myself. For one, it was a COMPLETE remaking of the Wolf Pack from the Twilight Saga: New Moon. It gives the werewolves a bad name and makes them look like some deformed mutation of a rabid dog. I actually started to like werewolves after seeing Jacob Black and all his awesomeness on the big screen at the movies. That was until I saw your crappy remake of what you call to be a “were wolf”. I don’t see how you live with yourself for making it the way you did. If I made this movie, I would be ashamed to even admit that I owned it. How can a werewolf be killed with a silver bullet? Better yet, have you saw the transformation of the man that is “supposed” to be the wolf? He sits in some chair and his entire body turns in to some mutated freak. If you would watch the transformation of Jacob Black, (Taylor Lautner) he doesn’t come close to looking as fake, cheap and or mutated as the wolf man. You tell me, who looks to be the better werewolf. Your stupid Wolf Movie didn’t even make the top Movie for the charts; Valentines Day WITH TAYLOR Lautner! Get that this is MY oppinion and I felt I wanted to express it because I saw that your email was on your site. I wanted to let you know this is what i thought of the wolf man that sucks. FREAKIN LAUTNER DID!

Didn’t get enough of Jacob’s six pack abs or Edward’s hairy Milk Dud vampire nipples back in November? Well don’t fret, friend! The Twilight Saga: New Moon is hitting store shelves on DVD and Blu-ray on March 20, 2010! That’ll be a nice bridge for the Twihards who are fidgeting and antsy, either during class or while folding laundry, at the long gulf between the bleak month of January and June 30, 2010, when The Twilight Saga: Eclipse hits cinemas. The Twilight Saga: New Moon DVD and Blu-ray will feature audio commentary from director, Chris Weitz and editor Peter Lambert, as well as a six part documentary, rehearsal footage, three music videos and a leaked sex tape with Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson. Okay, the last one was a lie, but wouldn’t that be cool? No, you’re right, I didn’t think so either.

Looks like the New Moon love affair, a pasty and depressing one at that, is over and people – families – are moving on to more uplifting entertainment. Yes, after three weeks at number one, The Twilight Saga: New Moon was booted from the box office top spot by The Blind Side, the true-to-life story of Baltimore Raven’s offensive lineman, Michael Oher and how he was taken in and loved by Tuhoy family. Sandra Bullock (The Proposal) stars as Leigh Anne Tuhoy, the strong-willed matriarch who spearheads the family’s eventual adoption of Oher. Frankly, for a movie to hit number one in its third release week is pretty remarkable, but let’s not get too excited – there was nothing outstanding at the box office to challenge either New Moon or The Blind Side, something that will assuredly happen next weekend when Disney’s The Princess and The Frog goes wide. However, I won’t lie – I didn’t expect New Moon to get whooped by nearly $5 million by The Blind Side. The question now is will the easily evident word-of-mouth boost for film help any best actress buzz for Sandra Bullock as we head into award’s season? From someone who will be voting in the Utah Film Critics Association’s annual awards in two weeks, let me say this: No way. As I said before, she’s solid, but it’s not Oscar-worthy in any way, shape or form.

Love it or hate it, you can’t deny the New Moon train is rolling at full steam the last two weeks and, by all accounts, shouldn’t slip from the top spot until possibly December 11, when Disney’s The Princess and The Frog opens wide. For now, The Twilight Saga: New Moon has earned at hearty $230,947,696 domestically, making it the sixth highest grossing movie of 2009. Back to The Princess and The Frog – if early reviews are any indication, then Disney’s first classically animated film (2D) since 2004’s Home on the Range is assuredly going to boot Twilight down to number two. As it stands today, The Princess and The Frog is at 82 percent on RottenTomatoes.com. Still, it’s hard to see what else, before Avatar (December 18), Sherlock Holmes (December 25) and Alvin and The Chipmunks: The Squeakuel (December 25) could possibly boot Edward and Bella from the top five money-earners at the box office. That would make a bounteous six week run for the second film in the Twilight Saga and, I predict, place the film behind Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen as the second highest grossing movie of 2009.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon killed, killed, killed at the box office this weekend with close to $141 million thanks to the deep pockets of chicks across the land. Earlier in the week, industry tracking had New Moon at a respectable $60-70 million. While we here at AATM “doubted the validity” of those numbers, I don’t think it was until the midnight premieres that there was an inkling the movie would inspire an opening that would land it THIRD ALL TIME BOX OFFICE right behind The Dark Knight ($158 million) and Spider-Man 3 ($151 million)- both of which had an even audience spread. Hail to the power of male objectification wish-fulfillment women! Thing is? Numbers will most likely be higher when “actuals” (the actual dollars adjusted after a full Sunday run– not just today’s estimate) come in on Monday/Tuesday. I can’t say that I’m surprised, and yet, I’m still kind of surprised. While a $140 million dollar haul doesn’t validate New Moon in terms of quality as much as it shows the Twilight brand is a platinum mine, New Moon‘s massive success should give director Chris Weitz (who I inexplicably have a ton of good will for) a mood boost and a reason to hold of on improving his surfing technique. It’s also a “HA-HA!” to Paramount studios, who passed on renewing the rights to Twilight a few years back before Summit snatched it up and started printing gold coins off it. That said, we can finally put New Moon behind us and look forward to some other great films coming out this holiday season… you know, as a breather until May/June of next year when stylistic and dark director David Slade delivers Twilight‘s third chapter, Eclipse, to Summer Prime Time.

Stephen King might think J.K. Rowling is a better writer than oft-maligned Stephanie Meyer, but Twilight fans gave critics and naysayers the middle finger at midnight screenings on Friday, helping The Twilight Saga: New Moon become the highest-grossing midnight screening ever with $26.27 million. New Moon’s next target? The Dark Knight and the record for highest opening day with $67.2 million in ticket sales. Folks tracking New Moon’s progress believe the movie will gross over $70 million. As it stands, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is the highest grossing movie of 2009 with $402 million domestically. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is a distant second with $301 million. I don’t know about you, but even with the overwhelmingly negative reviews of New Moon, I wouldn’t expect its box-office returns to diminish sharply, in fact, this seems the type of movie that would encourage repeat viewings from its ginormous fan base. I’m betting New Moon punches Harry Potter in the soft parts and at minimum, grabs second place on the list of box office cash cows for 2009.

The tidal wave of New Moon hysteria hit early this morning as thousands of women of all ages, along with 25 guys, streamed into screenings starting at midnight, all hoping the second film in The Twilight Saga would be as tasty or better than last year’s Twilight. Judging by the squeals and the oohs and the ahhs, I’d say 99 percent of the audience was satiated with enough gooey Edward and Bella romance to last until June 2010 when The Twilight Saga: Eclipse hits theaters. Me? I pulled my hood over my head and wept bitter tears for the unrequited love young Jacob must endure at the hands of that charlatan, Miss Swan. Of course, I kid about hiding my face in my hood, but don’t be mistaken. While the New Moon tsunami has landed and will leave with its pockets full of cash, there is another fierce storm blowing across the web, this one in the form of severe hatred of all things Twilight, specifically the fans and the newest film. This is nothing new, I suppose, whereas Stephanie Meyer has been called a hack from coast-to-coast, the most notable being Stephen King’s lambasting of Meyer’s skills last February in USA Weekend. King said, “”Both Rowling and Meyer, they’re speaking directly to young people… the real difference is that Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and Stephanie Meyer can’t write worth a darn. She’s not very good.” I know, I know – love it or hate it, everyone has the right to their opinion, but I can’t help but feel many of these critics and pundits are hating just so they can hold hands and sing an angry Kumbaya with the loud majority screaming about how Meyer’s Twilight universe is senseless, boring drivel. The noise is especially loud regarding The Twilight Saga: New Moon, directed by Chris Weitz (The Golden Compass). Amongst my Utah Film Critic’s Association brethren the film was pretty much blasted, most giving it a failing or average mark. As of this writing, on RottenTomatoes.com, the movie is earning a 30 percent fresh rating, with 40 fresh reviews and 93 rotten. Again, I’m not saying people should love the movie when it deserves to be punched in the crotch; all I’m saying is why the predisposition to levy spiteful anger at the franchise? (Check out Dan’s article below on the Twilight hatered.) At any rate, that’s enough of that – you get my point. As for the story and plot of New Moon, do you really need me to delve too deeply? If you’re a Twilight fan, you know what happens, if you’re not, you’re going to get a high school soap opera that dances between the worlds of humans, werewolves and pasty-skinned vampires. Frankly, as someone who has never turned a single page in a Stephanie Meyer novel, the movie is harmless, lighthearted and nothing more than a vehicle to narrate the central theme of Meyer’s story – love and romance, specifically told from the...

They say when two people are in love they start to take on the other’s characteristics and, some say, physical characteristics. Yeah, well, that must be the case here, because Kristen Stewart is channeling Robert Pattinson’s Edward Cullen in this picture from a premiere of The Twilight Saga: New Moon. Oh, and while you’re considering how not cute Kristen is looking in that picture, make sure to remind yourself how hot Ashley Greene is. And now I’m done with AATM’s weekly “I want to be US Magazine” post. Please take your seats and we’ll get back to the business of movies.

So apparently, there’s this obscure movie opening on Friday. Something about a Moon and a closeted vampire, a weightlifting werewolf and a mopey girl? OK. Fine. You know it, we know it, and unless you’re pop-culture idiot, you know it. Twilight: New Moon is here. Never the kind to shy away from hit-whoring (we’re still up and coming after all– tell a friend!), we’ve got something to say about it. As a dude, the whole Twilight phenomenon has passed me by. I’d imagine that’s kind of due to a lack of inboard/outboard baby hosting utilities– the goods with which most of the Twilight fan contingent come naturally equipped. In fact, I hadn’t even heard of brooding teenage vampire love until it exploded out of the closet this last summer via the latest entry Breaking Dawn– despite the series having been fawned over–while naturally sulking and listening to Muse with shades drawn– since 2005. Now, with Twilight’s unexpected and rabid popularity having reached a High School Musical pitch and the first movie installment perfectly capitalizing on it with an expectation slapping $70 million opening weekend and its sequel, New Moon hoping to one-up, there’s been an undercurrent of outcry amongst the male geek contingent. “Twilight’s diluting our genre! They’re killing our vampires!” Uh… no. Sure, Twilight‘s an easy mark. If anything’s asking for cold-cocked sucker punches from the periphery, it’s a melodramatic phenomenon based on pretty boy werewolves and vampires swooned over by ladies aged 12-65. Still, Stephanie Meyer has done no more damage to love/lack of vampire enthusiasm than what a visually arresting but horribly embarrassing 30 Days of Night did while trying to bring the vampire “primal monster” angle back and is no less diluting than George Lucas’ excision of “sci” from “fi” for his Star Wars movies and most mainstream “sci-fi” comers thereafter. There’s a heaping ton of immanently mockable fodder when it comes to the Twilight fan base and the Harlequin meets Anne Rice prose that fuels the series’ frantic page turning… but then again, most bastions of male geekdom has the same: Star Trek? Star Wars? Elvish speaking fans of Tolkien? Just Google “ComicCon” to see how ridiculous male geek fanaticism can get. So all this ire begs the question: When did the genre club become boys only? You’d think all the fellas and their Princess Leia/ comic book cosplay fetishism would welcome so many women taking an interest in something fantastical while dipping their toes into the shallow end of the geek pool. In fact, I’m not sure why geeks wouldn’t gladly take all genre newcomers– especially girls. And while geekdom’s Y chromosome gaurdians may pile on the rhetorical shame over their swooning for some pale and pouty guy named Edward (as they should likewise be shamed over their far less discerning swoons at any genre girl baring belly or boob), there’s also going to be others who use Twilight as a gateway for wading deeper into the genre pool, maybe even discovering the admired...

Rumor has it Twilight fans were only a breath away from eclipsing Star Wars and Star Trek fans as the biggest dorks on the planet, but these two girls going bananas over New Moon actors Edi Gathegi (Laurent) and Jamie Campbell Bower (Caius) apparently tipped the scales in favor of the Twihards. Thanks to the Salt Lake Tribune for the image, taken yesterday at the Fashion Place Mall in Murray.
