It’s Friday and we should all be wearing a smile because the weekend is upon us. Even better? The month of January is just about over and Spring is that much closer to buoying our spirits and rescuing us from the damnable, frozen, dirty, whorish Winter season. At any rate, check out the sex panther cologne scene (one of my favorites) from Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. Also, for more enjoyment, check out this interview between Ron Burgundy and Jesus Jim Caveizel for the 2004 MTV Movie Awards. Happy Friday!

From Old School to Elf to Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby and even Land of the Lost (I think I might be one of a handful who actually enjoyed this movie), Will Ferrell has proven to be one of the funniest actors of the last decade. Mark Walhberg is in the same boat talent-wise. He’s no Oscar winner (literally), but he’s capable and solid, especially in The Departed, Three Kings and Boogie Nights. You’d think with these two headlining The Other Guys, a buddy-buddy-cop movie comedy, I would have been chomping at the bit to plant my derrière in an air conditioned multiplex seat, especially where funnyman director/writer Adam McKay (Step Brothers, Talladega Nights, Anchorman) is at the helm. But I wasn’t. The trailers and TV spots were uninspiring and the comedy showcased therein seemed beyond recycled. I literally had to drag myself to the press screening. Boy howdy, I’m glad I did! The Other Guys is the funniest movie of the summer. I went in expecting yawns and anguish, but I came out smiling and pleased. The Other Guys is funny from start to finish and its humor isn’t constructed on the flimsy and unstable foundation of physical comedy, but rather on the oddball characters and sharp writing Ferrell and McKay fans have come to know from their work together on the aforementioned Talladega Nights and Anchorman. Set in New York City, the film’s narrator, an un-credited Ice-T, introduces us to Detectives Highsmith and Danson (Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson), two slick, action-loving cops who are the toast of the town and almost as beloved as the Yankees amongst New Yorkers. The City that Never Sleeps is dealt a crushing blow when these two men are killed in the line of duty (something I did not see coming and an absolutely hilarious ode to Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid), but their fellow officers aren’t so brokenhearted and start jostling to take Highsmith and Danson’s spots as celebrity cops. Enter Terry Hoitz (Mark Wahlberg) and Allen Gamble (Will Ferrell). Both are desk jockeys, but only one enjoys the paperwork. They are partners, but are absolutely nothing alike. Gamble works the desk because he promised his wife (Eva Mendes) he’d stay safe, and Hoitz works the desk because all of NYC hates his guts for accidentally shooting Derek Jeter and costing the Yanks the World Series. Allen is the peaceful, calm, kindhearted doofus of the bunch – listening to Little River Band and driving a Toyota Prius, while Terry is the angry, ready-to-blow hothead, constantly insulting Allen’s abilities and masculinity, telling him he doesn’t even pee like a man. They are led by Captain Gene March (Michael Keaton) who, in a sign of the economic downturn, must also work at Bed Bath & Beyond to put his bi-sexual artist son through college. However, when the duo begins investigating the financial dealings of David Ershon (Steve Coogan), they discover crimes that could promote them from the laughing stock...

I said on the radio last Friday this upcoming summer movie slate is going to suck the sweat of a dead man’s balls and I’m not budging from that stance. Still, there are some interesting specks of hope dotting the cinematic landscape from May to August. One of those is The Other Guys, directed and co-written by Adam McKay (the dude behind Anchorman, Talladega Nights and Step Brothers), and stars Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Samuel L. Jackson, Dwayne “Don’t Call Me the Rock” Johnson, Eva Mendes, Anne Heche, Michael Keaton and Steve Coogan. I don’t know about you, but that’s a lot of talent and definitely piques my interest. I especially like seeing the stonefaced Wahlberg in self-depreciating roles. Check out the trailer and let me know what you think – yay or nay?

Better late than never. Just when I think I’d rather take Indian burns to the tenders than endure more of Will Ferrell’s deadpan-obvious doofus shtick, I forgo the pain of a thousand suns and willingly settle into comedic familiarity. Which means A) I’m not as tired of Will Ferrell as I thought, or B) Will Ferrell remains funny despite diminishing returns. After viewing Land of the Lost, I’m convinced it’s “B”. If you didn’t exist in the magical time period that birthed me and Andy (known to historians as the mid to late 70’s), Land of the Lost was a corntastic Saturday morning adventure originally aired 1974 to 1976. The goofy-played-as-serious half hour followed the time-warping adventures of the Marshall family and their run-ins with rubber dinosaurs and hissing lizard-men (Sleestaks). For those who do remember it, Land of the Lost is recalled with nostalgic fondness… but here’s the real world rub: no one under the age of 30 has any connection to it and everyone over the age of 30 could care less about revisiting it beyond the occasional “remember that one show…?” conversation. There’s probably a LOTL contingent out there which, in addition to Will Ferrell’s attachment, helped fueled Universal’s drive to produce and fund this movie (I’m looking at you, Execs), but I’m not sure where anyone thought there was ever broad audience demand (I’m looking at you, Execs). LOTL: 2009 largely sticks to LOTL: 1974’s otherworldly premise and sci-fidelic weirdness, but quickly eschews the original Saturday-morning-friendly premise of two kids and Dad warped to another dimension to make friends with a hairy cave-kid (Chaka) while camping and running from danger. Instead, audiences are now treated to the premise of a redneck, smart hottie and Will Ferrell warped to another dimension to make friends with a horny, hairy cave-teen (Chaka) while experimenting and running from bad jokes. The whole affair kicks off in cookie-cutter Will Ferrell style: after being publicly shamed on his theory of Time Warps by a jerktastic Matt Lauer, Dr. Rick Marshall (Will Ferrell) lands on hard times, reduced to middle school presentations and enduring verbal lashings by movie-obnoxious kiddies. That is, until he’s visited by science groupie Holly Cantrell (Anna Friel), who’s smart, wears a mean tank top, believes in Marshall’s time warp theories and has the proof –and expulsion from Cambridge University– to prove it. Together, they clomp off in search of concrete scientific evidence, thanks to a time warp energy locating device that randomly plays Broadway’s A Chorus Line pleading anthem “God, I hope I get it. I hope I get it!!”. The search leads them to a remote desert amusement park and tunnel-of-love style boat ride/gift shop operated by Danny Mcbride Will Stanton (Danny McBride). With time warp power emanations being picked up from inside the ride, Rick and Holly sign up for a Stanton-guided tour. Inside, Dr. Marshall’s locating device sets off a time warp that plunges the three into a time warp receptacle (aka- the land of the...

Enduring comedy classics are hard to come by- there’s a lot of attempts, but even more fail. Anchorman is not one of those unfortunate few. Solid in it’s outlandish ridiculousness and eternal in its sublime quotability, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy is a gentle gift of wonder and delight. There’s been rumor (isn’t there always?) of Anchorman 2 for some time, but apparently, in a recent press junket for Land of the Sleestacks Lost, Will Ferrell made mention of a meeting on the sequel next week. Whether that’s a load of crap or not–as coming from Will Ferrell– is for you to decide. Comedy sequels are super-treacherous and indespensable costars Brick Tamlan and Brian Fantana have become kind of a big deal, but I’m brushing my teeth, eating my vegetables and taking out the garbage extra good to ensure that 60% of the time, this movie happens every time.
