Memo to Vince Horiuchi: New Star Trek is a Good Thing

To: Vince Horiuchi, Salt Lake Tribune’s Resident “Village Vidiot” From: Andy Morgan, Inventor of Awesome Subject: Set Phasers to Dumb for Trek Vince, Vince, Vince. Sigh. Remember when you wrote this in the Salt Lake Tribune last Monday, November 16th? Director J.J. Abrams goes where no Trekkie has gone before by “re-imagining” the classic 1960s series Star Trek as a bombastic, action-packed, Star Wars-esque — and ultimately dumbed-down — movie that is anything but true Trek. The original crew of

New Moon’s Box Office Debut = Holy Effin’ Ess!

The Twilight Saga: New Moon killed, killed, killed at the box office this weekend with close to $141 million thanks to the deep pockets of chicks across the land. Earlier in the week, industry tracking had New Moon at a respectable $60-70 million. While we here at AATM “doubted the validity” of those numbers, I don’t think it was until the midnight premieres that there was an inkling the movie would inspire an opening that would land it THIRD ALL

Yeah, I’ll Defend of New Moon. Kind of.

New Moon is currently basking in a pile of critical distaste. It’s currently a sad and deflated 30% on Rotten Tomatoes and has 70% of listed critics giving it stink eye. Not that critical ire matters in terms of films like these. New Moon will make its money and add further fuel to the “critics are out of touch” fire– just like Twilight’s spiritual cinematic brothers G.I. Joe and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen did this summer. Critical loathing won’t

Hey Geeks- Twilight Ain’t Heavy, She’s Your Sister

So apparently, there’s this obscure movie opening on Friday. Something about a Moon and a closeted vampire, a weightlifting werewolf and a mopey girl? OK.  Fine. You know it, we know it, and unless you’re pop-culture idiot, you know it. Twilight: New Moon is here. Never the kind to shy away from hit-whoring (we’re still up and coming after all– tell a friend!), we’ve got something to say about it. As a dude, the whole Twilight phenomenon has passed me

Memo to Paramount: Do Not Make Paranormal Activity 2

“We have the rights on a worldwide basis to do Paranormal 2 and we’re looking to see if that makes some sense.” That quote comes from Paramount Pictures chairman, Brad Grey, and I can tell Mr. Grey, without hesitation, that making a follow-up to Paranormal Activity would be a terrible mistake. Not only does it have a 99.9 percent chance of bombing at the box office, but making it would tarnish the sheer genius and creativity of the first movie.

Two Cents: The Logan Art Cinema

Here in Cache Valley (IE- Logan), there was only one place to go for screenings of indie films like The Hurt Locker, No Country For Old Men and There Will Be Blood: The Logan Art Cinema. As of today, the only place to go might be Hastings, Hollywood Video and your living room. Thanks to a virtually hidden location and meager attendance, Westates Theaters (Cache Valley’s favorite local monopoly), has decided it high time to give Logan Art Cinema its

Patrick Swayze was a Lover AND a Fighter

Patrick Swayze died yesterday at age 57 from pancreatic cancer, something his family, fans and the public have kind of expected since he was diagnosed with the disease in March of 2008. I’m not going to sit her and mince words and say Swayze was a great actor. He wasn’t. But Swayze was talented and was a fantastic entertainer. He was a big fixture in cinema during my high school days and proved that dudes can kick ass and be
