On Friday’s KVNU For the People Movie Show, Jason and I covered two movies living rent-free in my head – one like the best houseguest ever, the other like a non-showering, food-pilfering buttmunch: KPOP DEMON HUNTERS and Ron Howard’s new “horny survival thriller,” EDEN. If you missed it, you can listen to the full show here.
First up, KPOP DEMON HUNTERS. I gave it an A for big, glitter-bomb energy with clever visual gags, needle-drop swagger, and just enough heart to sneak-attack your feelings between the spin kicks. As of right now, it’s sitting at #1 on my “Best Animated of the Year” list. No apologies. (Okay, maybe one apology to my neighbors for my 900th belting of “Golden.”)
Then there’s EDEN, which has Ron Howard turning the heat lamp on human nature until it sweats. It’s a sun-baked, lusty, bad-decisions buffet where survival is optional and restraint is…let’s say “on hiatus.” This movie wants to be awards-season friendly, but it strikes out for the most part, feeling less organic and more in-your-face. If you do head out to see this meh-fest, bring loads of caffeine, as well as your best side-eye for anyone who says “we could totally live off the grid.”
