Note to Westates: Give Us The Hurt Locker!

Seems like I’ve been pimping Kathryn Bigelow’s universally praised The Hurt Locker since time began. Way back in May I  listed it as one of the summer’s Must Sees. Unfortunately, it’s been tough to catch a screening as it’s been rolling around in a very limited LA/New York release. Three cheers for small miracles as The Hurt Locker opens a little wider this weekend and has Salt Lake City listed as one of the fortunate cities it’s shacking up with.

New District 9 Trailer Proves Film is a Must-See

I’ve seen posters and teasers for the Peter Jackson-produced and Neill Blomkamp-directed “District 9,” but until this new, longer trailer was released I had no burning desire, except for Blomkamp and Jackson’s involvement in the Halo motion picture project, to see this sci-fi flick based on Blonkamp’s short film “Alive in Joburg.” This new two minute preview paints a richer, deeper and more revealing look at what seems to be a visually stunning, tense, action-packed, intelligent film. I say this

Funny People Redband Trailer is Not So Red

“Funny People,” the third film from director Judd Apatow (“The 40 Year-Old Virgin” and “Knocked Up”), is one movie I’ve been anticipating since the first trailer hit the web several months back. The movie releases on July 31 and this evening I came across the just-released redband trailer – it sat there staring at me in all its R-rated goodness, like the Playboy magazine you find when you’re a kid and know, without a doubt, you should not be looking

Trailer Tuesday (Dan’s Pick): 2012: It’s a Disaster!!

Sure, you’ve seen the trailer where Mother Earth douches the White House, throws a primeval tantrum all over LA and hocks smoking lugies into Yellowstone’s face. But none of that compares to the funky, smooth retro you’ll see in this gem of a gloriously cut and scored trailer for 2012. It’ll take you back to Earthquake, The Towering Inferno and Airport and tuck you in with a pessimistic kiss and a warm glass of milky mayhem. It’ll also assure that

Trailer Tuesday: The Fog of War

Former Secretary of State (under President Kennedy and Johnson) Robert McNamara, the whiz kid who helped the military optimize bombings of Germany and Japan in World War II and who later ran the Ford Motor Company and World Bank, died yesterday at the age of 93. He will forever be linked to the controversy, devastation and tragedy that was the Vietnam War. In 2003, filmmaker Errol Morris won the Oscar for Best Documentary for “The Fog of War:  Eleven Lessons

Diablo Cody Back with Jennifer’s Body

I loved the movie “Juno.” In fact, I adored it. I wanted to hug it and snuggle with it. Jason Bateman was his usually snarky self, Ellen Page was loveable and snappy, Michael Cera was, um, Michael Cera, and the supporting cast, from Jennifer Garner to Allison Janney to J.K. Simmons and Olivia Thirlby added nothing but oodles of fantastic to this Jason Reitman (“Thank You for Smoking”) film. But despite all that, the movie only succeeds because of the brilliance

Tie Schmie! Transformers Wins Again!

Coming into the 4th of July weekend, “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” was on a rampage at the box office, amassing $200 million in five days. Given the abysmal reviews, this surprised a lot of people, yours truly included. But word of mouth must have trickled down, because “Transformers” dropped 61 percent and barely edged out “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs” for first place with $42.4 million. In fact, it was so close, weekend estimates had the two films
