The Road Trailer or Ode to Planet Beardatron

Cormac McCarthy’s “The Road” is one of the most moving books I’ve ever read, probably because I dread the inevitable end-of-the-world and all the unfathomable violence and horror that would follow such a doomsday event, and also because I am a father and protecting my family is what I am supposed to do and would do by and with any means necessary. But I’m not so sure about this trailer. Does it look to be a great movie? Sure, but

Angels & Demons Review (****)

Two things I know to be guaranteed as I write this review: “Star Trek” will not hold on to the top box office spot this weekend, and despite Tom Hanks ruffling many a Mormon’s feathers last January, calling them “Un-American” for supporting Proposition 8, those same folks will be lining up in droves this weekend to forgive Hanks as he reprises his role as symbologist Robert Langdon in “Angels & Demons.” The cash and clemency are both deserved, because the

Lusting After a Mann and his Enemies

One movie I’m looking forward to this summer is Michael Mann’s “Public Enemies,” starring Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Marion Cotillar. I understand there is some trepidation from Mann fans given the director’s last outing was the not-so-great “Miami Vice.” I have a hard time believing Michael Mann is capable of dropping two consecutive cinematic bombs, and based on what I’ve seen from the “Public Enemies” trailer, it’s going to be chock full of gangstery goodness. Shown above are three

What’s in your Netflix Queue

It’s been awhile since I’ve revealed the scantily clad shame of of my Netflix queue and opened my top ten to ridicule, mockery and overall lambasting. Right now I have “The Reader” sitting at home on Blu-ray, Kate Winslet’s netherregions beckoning for watching in HD. When I’m done with that, here’s what is forthcoming from my pals at Netflix. Click on the link to watch the trailer for the movie and let me know what you think. Good? Suck? And

Christmas in May

Robert Zemeckis and his motion capture animation. The Polar Express and Beowulf were both dry and stiff experiments in using “actorly animation”* to tell fantastical tales of creepy hobos, jumpin’ hot chocolate guys, a kid with the most annoying voice in the known universe and naked Norsemen and the long-tailed Angelina Jolie yuck-mouths they knock boots with. While both stories had their original mystique, the animatic execution was cold and detached. Zemeckis’ next animation project (remember when he did actual

Terminators and Pizza go Together Like Ladies and Peanut Butter

In a recent red carpet interview, Terminator creator James Cameron had some exciting stuff to say about the upcoming Terminator: Salvation: “It doesn’t look like it’s going to be an embarrassment.” He’s out to get you HYPED! Sign me up for a Friday/Saturday double viewing. Luckily, Pizza Hut has a little more skin in the game and is giving you a glimpse of a scene from the movie (which, from a visual standpoint, looks ominously ethereal)– complete with McG introduction

Trailer Tuesday (Dan’s Pick): Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus

Mathematics have never been my thing– which makes the nonsensical and winning equation of Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus explode into all kinds of sense: Sharks are rad. Lorenzo Lamas is lame. Deborah Gibson was once rad, but is now lame. The infinitely stalled Meg movie would have been rad, but the book is lame and Tentacles was never rad and always lame. In math-talk, that’s Sharks – Lamas – Gibson – Meg + Meg – Tentacles = 0 =

Trailer Tuesday: The Phantom Menace 10 Years Later

I remember it vividly. The date was November 1998, I was eating lunch and listening to my illegally downloaded copy of (thanks Napster!) Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing.” I had skipped class so I could sit by the computer and watch the new “Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace” trailer download via my free dial-up Internet connection. It took five hours and when the sparkly Lucasfilm logo appeared and “Every saga has a beginning…” scrolled by, I
