State of Play (****)

“State of Play” is an intelligent, seamlessly paced political thriller that will most likely be overlooked and even steamrolled this weekend by the Zac Efron Love Train. Who wants to watch a chubby Russell Crowe and a graying Ben Affleck attack D.C. corruption when Efron’s rippled abs can be had for the better part of two hours? Maybe you might, but I’ll take the former “Gladiator” star and his acting chops any day over Captain High School Musical. Love him

Lord of the Rings Trilogy on Blu-ray in 2009?

I love Blu-ray. I really do. So much I’d marry it if I could. I also love Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” movies, even more that Captain Flannel Von Chubneck’s “Star Wars” sextuplets. So what to my wondering eyes did I see on MovieWeb.com today? They reference a story taken from Digital Bits.com that states Amazon.com is taking pre-orders for “The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy” on Blu-ray, supposedly releasing this December. According to the source,

Red Dawn(s) Again

As a 10-year-old kid in the middle of the Cold War circa 1984, Red Dawn freaked me the crap out. Hollywood’s first wide-release PG-13 movie, Red Dawn earned it’s 13 with enough surprisingly violent and grounded in enough realism to make it both bleak and frightening. Red Dawn also has the honor of being the film that originally coined the now legendary “Wolveriiiiiiiiines!”– a war cry I shout out every time I think about having to enter a Wal-Mart. While

Hurtin’ For Hurt Locker

Ok, so there’s one more summer film I’m pining to see– one that’s got some exceptional buzz but seems to be arriving quietly: Hurt Locker. If Hurt Locker has been flying under your radar, hopefully the newly released “Trailer B” puts an end to that travesty. Hurt Locker, the based-on-truth story of a combat bomb squad, is directed by the lovely Katherine Bigelow. If that name means nothing to you and you’re an action fan… for shame! Bigelow directed the

Harry Potter Release Date Change

It was announced today “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” will not release on July 17, 2009 as originally planned. Instead it will release on July 15, 2009. Now Harry Potter nerds can don their wizard wands and magic cats two days earlier. This is the best news ever! To celebrate, take a peek at the most recent “Half-Blood Prince” trailer below (the second international trailer, to be exact).

Inglorious Bastards American Idol Footage

I’m pining for Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglorious Bastards” August 21, 2009 release date like I’m pining for Old Man Winter to stop douching snowstorms on Cache Valley (that’s a pristine chunk of Northern Utah for all you non-Utah readers).  Get on with Spring already, damnit! However, this brief “inside” look at “Inglorious Bastards” shown during “American Idol” last night is absolutely, unequivocally, 100% lame. So, if you’re into lame teasers that give you nothing of value, check it out. Loser.

Blade Runner Receives a Mooning

Right now, even as you read this, there’s a grundleload of highly anticipated movies lining up for their crack at your summer dollars. I’m all kinds of jazzed about seeing one in particular and can’t wait to toss my dollars in its face: Moon. Yes, Moon! I know, huh. Thing is, I love this stuff– the somewhat pessimistic and spooky stencil of human insignificance against the cold, black unknown of space. The spartan existence of the men and women who

Piranha 3D Nabs Old Hottie from Karate Kid

Elisabeth Shue, who once had hugs and kisses with Ralph Macchio in “The Karate Kid,” is set to further the complete gimmickiness of 3D by starring in a re-do of “Piranha,” a campy, “Jaws” wannabe from way back in 1978. The original was directed by Joe Dante (“Gremlins”), this version, aptly and creatively titled “Piranha 3D” is helmed by Alexandre Aja, whose claim to fame is directing another old horror remake, 2006’s “The Hills Have Eyes.” “Piranha 3D” has a
